*Stations called for COMMENTS only

Tonight’s band was generally better than usual with a few deep uni-directional fades as the net progressed. In the FLDIGI Exercise, we CONFIRMED Doug KA7FOO in Reno,NV with one pass of PSK250/RC4. THOR/50×1 CONFIRMED the remaining six stations. Steve W7WSV in Mesa,AZ was Monitoring tonight and CONFIRMED the Exercise file on the 2nd pass in THOR/50×1. We lost contact with Dave K7DV early in the net.

Here’s two points to keep in mind about the FLAMP Exercise. First, we don’t usually expect to CONFIRM many stations with the first mode. We’re exploring mode characteristics in various band condx. We prefer to use all three passes in different modes to CONFIRM all stations. This give more hands-on practice to more Operators and increases the opportunity for participants to Relay fill blocks for NCS. 2nd, the Optional Exercise questions are only included to make file manipulation more realistic. The questions are not material to the exercise. We do try to make them relevant, but conjuring a pithy question every seven days is not easy. You’re welcome to suggest suggestions for the FLAMP Exercise. We recently use a question suggested by Jaye KE6SLS.

Mindy wrapped the net in an 1hr/1min tonight thanks to your focus and attention. We really accomplish a lot in an hour, thanks to each of you staying focused on net operations. Last week, we checked in 35 stations with ten in the FLAMP Exercise and still managed to close just a few minutes beyond 1.5hr. It’s a long time to remain focused, especially when the roster is large with long gaps before you’re up again. We’re all engaged in managing the net and we appreciate your assistance.

Steve K6ETA, Western Digital Net/NCS, plans for a Relay Exercise next week, 8/Oct/20. He’ll send a strong station to 40m, 7.081mhz, with a message to be Relayed to Gary K7EK in Kentucky. We hope to get the message to Gary and possibly receive his reply during net session. Steve will dispatch a Relay station to 7.081 and continue with net business while the Relay station works the message to and from Kentucky. We’re using Gary in Kentucky because he the closest station to the Atlantic that we know well.

Remember WDN on Thursday, 1930p/0230z, 3.581, MFSK-32, Steve K6ETA/NCS. Thanks for contributing to an brisk and orderly net. We hope to see you again next Tuesday evening for another session.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex189.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP Exercise.
If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic round
with FLAMP.

We recently changed net-format to enable Monitoring stations to Fill or CONFIRM the FLAMP
Exercise file or submit the OPTIONAL Exercise file. Following the Comment Round, we close
the net to release those that need to leave. Then we take Comments from Monitoring stations.
After Comments we CONFIRM Optional Exercise files, and send fills for the initial Exercise.
Calling a Monitor’s session after Closing takes advantage of better band condx at that hour.

We’re hoping a couple ORCA Ops will run some of the after-net Monitor’s session. If you’ve
been working ORCA for awhile, you’re qualified. It’s very easy and provides basic NCS
experience. You don’t need to send every fill yourself, you can also engage other Ops to
relay fills. This extends practice to more stations. Don’t worry about an error or two;
it’s a Training Net. Let us know; we’ll prepare you to succeed and enjoy yourself.

Steve K6ETA/NCS, Western Digital Net, is preparing a Relay Exercise for next week’s WDN,
8/Oct/20. WDN is looking for mid-US stations able to relay traffic to the East Coast. Steve
plans to dispatch a WDN station at 0245z/1945p to call for potential relay stations on 40m,
7.081mhz. We hope to engage ORCA/WDN Ops in AZ, NM, KS, MO, etc, to relay traffic
Eastward.

Please email both Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com for the Net Report.

I have a contract pending in NM. I am a little bit nervous about accepting it due to the current volatile political situation. But my wife says we need the money due to being 5 months in lockdown. She wants me to go. I told her things could get nasty, especiall in Seattle and Portland, only 100 miles from us. She insists I go. Oh well, wish me luck!

Thanks to Doug and Mindy for the net tonight, and for giving me a little extra time to complete the exercise, HOWEVER, I was ready to go with it at the start. (:

Sorry I flubbed the send to in FLAMP. No signal report this time around.

It’s been a busy few weeks. I installed a hardwood floor in my bedroom and sealed some gaps with great stuff. Shortly after I finished PGE disconnected the power to my area to prevent a wildfire. I only have a 1KW generator and as such was left without hot water. The smoke from the Riverside fire rolled in and got so bad that the air quality index got up to nearly 600. We ended up leaving and spending a few days east of the Cascades. Air was still terrible there but better than here.

The local VHF net was very active during the power outage and provided good info. My decision to keep 32lb of ice in my freezer kept all of my meat safely frozen. After this incident I added another 16lb. Cooking on the camp stove worked reasonably well. Learned some lessons for the next time. I had been keeping spare spark plugs for the generator in my garage, and they corroded. I will not be doing that anymore. I also need to come up with a way to take hot showers if this happens again. I should come up with a way to safely cook in the garage in case there is a long term power outage in the winter. Some grid independent HF comms would be nice too.

I hope everyone has a good, safe week. KG7FGT BTN

Some very good info in ur comments David. Lots to think about when systems break down.

NCS and the net < KS6x[j am on battery*ower tb k hour, 8 to 9, and with most eve© thing possible ineeoe house powered down, as a “demand response” exercise with ohmconnect.com … It coordinates with the three big California electrical utilities to create a system in which electrical demand spikes can be flattened out using voluntary short-term conservation by consumers. It is an interesting challenge, and is related to ham radio operated off the grid. < KS6M

Modified my RV last weekend, still find new homes for some of my stuff (junk). Great WX, cool mornings (low 40’s), upper 70s / lower 80s for the high. As per everybodies FlAmp fraffic, received all at 100%. Good band conditions for me, though the ORCA Image had ragged edges. The Nevada QSO Party is on the Oct 9 – 11th weekend. Put it on your callendar. Hope to hear you on the air.

Today, my friend Dexter ag6da and his buddy came over and took my old drag say and other bits of machinery that I can no longer handle out of my garage. Drag saw will now live at the Timber Heritage society. Gave them some blades for it too. Slowly garage is nearing car storage capable! :)

Very smoky here, lots of ash covering everything. We are in active hazard conditions for air quality. All we can hope for now is a good shift in prevailing winds to drive out the smoke and ash.

Worked a ham today traveling through here .. They were evacuated two days ago, finally found a house to rent in Shasta lake–he’s hoping for better air conditions while they wait out the evacuations.

So far, the new inverted M antenna is doing a GREAT job. Have heard from many folks on SSB that my signal has never been better. Really happy to be able to improve my meager signal!

Some stations seem lighter than usual, so I have a feeling band is changing rapidly again. But boy, we seem to be moving right along tonight! 8pm PDT YES, band is going south, north but not well! :)

Most stations very difficult copy now: 8:15pm PDT included NCS. Going to lean on the REPORT from NCS to read all the comments I’m missing.

73 all, be safe, have fun if you can and enjoy CLEAN AIR :)
