*Stations called for COMMENTS only

In spite of spotty band condx, check-ins set another record tonight. 37 stations in the Log; our largest ck-in ever. Mindy W7ZAP will hold the ORCA 2020 Check-In Record eternally. Even more remarkable was the ck-in process. It flowed like clockwork. Hats off to each of you for paying close attention at ck-in. There was not one double; not one coat-tail. It was a textbook check-in. Stations to our North were lite at ck-in and some disappeared by the FLAMP Exercise. Three stations checked in from KS/MO. Rick K0KEK in Smithville, Missouri was able to work the entire net, even CONFIRMING the Optional Exercise. Propagation is an endless surprise.

Another propagation oddity: We learned by email that Steve WY7SJM in Casper, Wyoming copied NCS, but no other net station. Maybe we had a pipeline from Brookings,OR to Casper,WY. It’s hard to imagine why he didn’t copy any of the other solid signals tonight.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Ken W7ECK in Duvall, Washington. We’re currently having less than ideal propagation into Washington, but this will certainly change. We hope the change will bring better condx. We’ll ask Ken to Monitor the net a few sessions to learn ORCA routines. Welcome back to Erik KK6RKY in Trinity Center, California. Erik is a long-term ORCA Op and well versed in digital traffic operations.

A few things went astray tonight, but nothing serious. Please don’t be offended when we correct operational errors. Everyone may learn something and avoid making that error in the future. We mean to be polite and helpful; sometimes, in the press and flow of the net, we don’t have enough mental reserve to conjure the best phrasing quickly. We do try. On a Training net, it’s important to practice correctly every time we practice. Otherwise, we’re reinforcing inferior operating routines. Conducting the net constructively entails correcting erroneous actions; that’s part of the NCS role. We mean to be helpful and not demeaning or irritating. Thanks for your patience.

Remember, ORCA is a Directed net. This fundamental convention is of paramount importance to digital nets. Net members are not free to address other members directly during nets. All communications go through NCS. We follow the ARRL guidelines for Directed net closely. Otherwise, our nets would be disorganized, longer, and tedious. We would not be learning good operating routines. You don’t have to visit many digital nets to appreciate the value of adhering to Directed net protocols. To address another net member directly in a Directed net, you send ‘Contact URCALL’ to NCS. During ORCA sessions, there’s no provision for members to chat during net-operations. We wrap each session with a Comment round. If you have a problem during net operations, VidID your callsign or send it normally on 1500wf to contact NCS.

There will be no formal Western Digital Net on Thursday, New Years Eve. Again, Steve K6ETA WDN/NCS suggests we stop by 3.581mhz and say Hello and Happy New Year on New Years Eve. We had a brief informal WDN net on Christmas Eve with Jaye KE6SLS handling check-ins and a brief round of Comments. If you’re not busy on New Years Eve, drop by and say Hello and HNY!.

We were a bit surprised to learn there’s a number of packet station Operators in the group. While 70’s Packet is now dated, there’s still a lot of operational legacy Packet infrastructure in many parts of the country. Packet is slow (1200baud), but can be very reliable. We’ll be happy to have it if other systems fail. Only one Packet Node of five remains in our county. There’s not much chance of restoring the lost nodes, but we hope to retain the last working node that connects us to Northern California.

We’re currently looking for a GUI terminal app for Packet that runs on Raspbian. We used to use the Win app, Procomm Plus, and would like to find a similar GUI app that includes macros. If you know of one, please let us know.

?ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex202.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic round with FLAMP.

As announced, there was no Western Digital Net last Thursday evening, Christmas Eve.
We did meet informally. Jaye KE6SLS filled the NCS role by compiling check-ins and
informally managing a small roster. It was a brief net with lots of Christmas good
wishes. It’s nice to have established 3.581 as a digital watering-hole. We will be
monitoring this frequency in times of need; it’s here we’ll likely to find friends
at off-net times.

There will be no formal Western Digital Net this coming Thursday, New Years Eve. We
encourage all ORCA/WDN Ops to stop by the freq anyway if they have time to say Hello
for the last time this year.

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com
(another file location & manipulation exercise)

Doug & I wish you a safe and healthy New Year! Stay alert and focused, 2021 may be a
year like no other.

Net Report posted soon: http://orcadigitalnet.com/reports/

Well that’s one way to close out 2020… a record 37 check-ins! Nice that they all came very orderly and spaced out.

Over to Doug K7KY for the FLAMP exercise < W7ZAP

Before RSID: <<2020-12-30T03:45Z MFSK-32 @ 1500>>
Tonight’s FLAMP exercise begins in PSK63-RC4, (220wpm, 330hz, 80%).
We’ll fill with MFSK-64, (240wpm, 1260hz), & MFSK-32 (120wpm,

ORCA < WA7HHE GE to the net tonight, listening in just before our BeeHive Utah net tonight one of our net members AE7LE Gary 78 years old, just barely back on the air after having Covid. Was in the hospital for only 4 days. Said however his 53 years old son has been in the hospital for” 30 days”. With that said, lets all be safe so we will be around this next year which is coming up soon.

KI7TPDLkºcn se teery little to report here. Band conditions improved as the net progressed. For a while I thought I might have had to pack it in. Significant fading of some stations.

Recent events such as the bombing of the AT&T central office in Nashville and the natural gas s2„rumpolorado are reminders that the infrastructure we are used to is more vulnerable than we are would desire. Being able to provide for these things yourself, at least temporarily, is very important.

Be sure to take care of yourselves and those around you. 73s all around.

The hospital here continues to press forward with COVID vaccinations, but the supply is limited to about 150 doses per week. On Sunday, all of our hospital beds were taken, and ER patients were waiting in line, sometimes in ER, sometimes on a stretcher in the hallway. It continues cold here. Last Friday, cycling to work, it was 3 degrees Fahrenheit. Last night it snowed, and I decided that I would have to go to work on foot, instead of using the bicycle. As I was walking on the sidewalk in front of the UNM this morning, admiring the full moon, my feet suddenly went out from under me and I landed on my sacrum — OWW that hurt! I made it through the day, and the pain is less this evening. Hopefully, I will recovered soon. Cycling to work will be out of the question for at least a week.

I didn’t mean to be short about the FLAMP relay. Just things move quickly around here and I get finger tied.. K7KY Doug, you did change modes with me didn’t you? I was ready to resend but didn’t want to do so until instructed to do so by Net Control.

Did I miss my call for Traffic??? Opps. To my knowledge, no one around here does any Packet Radio. I never have.

I was reading about the 80′ tall discone antenna at the Titian Missile Museum in Tucson Arizona. Apparently all you have to do is show your license and they give you the key to the box containing the coax. Just hook up your radio and off you go. I’d expect an 80′ discone to hear everything!

ORCA < K7KY

The errors and doubles tonight are unusual. ORCA usually ticks along smoothly and we get a lot of practice every net. It doesn’t take many doubles or errors to consume a lot of net time. Errors and mistakes do happen on a Training net; we’re error tolerant. We avoid the avoidable by staying focused on net flow. The band can monkey-wrench the best of intentions (-:

A bit of confusion developed during the FLAMP Exercise tonite. Greg KG7D did relay the 2nd FILL pass with TxID. His TxID may have been zapped by band condx in some areas. When unusual thing occur, leave it for NCS to sort out, or until the Exercise is over to address the issue. We all have a part in conducting the net. Thanks for your focus and assistance.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Ken W7ECK in DUVALL,WA. We’ll ask Ken to monitor enough ORCA nets to learn net operations. Lately, we’ve had trouble working stations to our North. They’re solid at ck-in, but fade b4 we get to the FLAMP Exercise.

While band condx have not favored stations to our North, Rick K0KEX in Smithville,MO worked the FLAMP Exercise w/o issue and completed and submitted the Optional Exercise. Good work, Rick. It’s a lot later at his station in MO.

Interesting to hear there’s a Titan Missle Museum. I worked the Titan I & Titan II launches in the 60’s when I was an Electronic & Explosive Tech.

Happy New Year! And, ck-out Ivermectin for prevention and treatment. There are dosage schedules on-line. Doug K7KY
