*Stations called for COMMENTS only

Tonight was not unusual, propagation wise, but the FLAMP Exercise was unusual.  You probably notice that not every station responds to their REPORT call quickly. That’s not unusual. Focus and reaction times differ. Some stations reply in a few seconds, other may take 15-20. Again, not unusual. When stations ignore NCS’s call for REPORTS, but have the OPTIONAL Exercise ready for the Traffic Round, we know something’s amiss. Some are working the more complicated OPTIONAL Exercise and are no longer focused on their position in net flow.  They are not prepared to REPORT. Replying to NCS with an FLAMP REPORT is part of completing the basic Exercise. Until the Exercise file is CONFIRMED, the primary FLAMP Exercise in incomplete.

The FLAMP Exercise is actually two exercises; old news to most of you. The primary task is simply REPORTING when NCS calls that you need fills, or you’ve completed (CONFIRMED) the file. That’s the main Exercise. The OPTIONAL Exercise within is intended to challenge those who’ve mastered the basic Exercise. It really is a challenge. There’s a lot to do and it requires more than NBEMS skills; it requires knowledge and familiarity with your PC Operating System. It requires you to retain net-focus while working between two and three applications and navigating the PC file system. Meanwhile, you need to retain sufficient focus to respond to surprises. On any net, things can go astray. Emergency net can be intense. Be prepared for surprises. NCS may ask you to Relay a block or two, even when you’ve not CONFIRMED the file. NCS knows which blocks you have and may ask you to fill another station to enable that station to Relay the complete file.  Stay focused.

Let’s get ready for the upcoming SATERN Nationwide Digital Exercise. The outcome should result in dependable Operators and pathways to pass traffic station to station, coast to coast. Eventually, we’ll have known pathways to pass traffic with nothing more than NBEMS software and a cadre of Amateur digital Ops. By years end, we may appreciate the real-world value of this SATERN experiment.

Here’s the SATERN Nationwide Digital Exercise URL again: https://qso.com/satern/exercise.html
We’ll begin with a single IC-213 message sent by Doug K7KY in Oregon to Joe N0LSD in New York. It will cross the country by relay between individual digital Operators using only NBEMS software. When Joe receives the message, he’ll send an HTML copy to Ken KD5XJ. Next, we’ll repeat the process from East to West. Following that, we can work multiple messages both ways. We should end up with workable times/paths/operators that can move NBEMS traffic efficiently by  individual Relays. This will be both interesting and valuable. The Exercise begins next Tuesday evening, 4Aug20, following  ORCA DIGITAL NET.

It’s important to follow the outlined protocols; pay particular attention to logging the relay audit correctly on the Responder Tab. This information will help us identify dependable relay paths and Operators. An example of audit logging is presented in the Exercise outline. Each Operator will add to this audit when you handle the message. Read the outline carefully. This experiment will be interesting and should lead to alternate methods of passing Traffic with only NBEMS software. This Report will be followed by a special posting of the upcoming SATERN Training Bulletin announcing the kick-off next Tuesday. Do your homework and be prepared. This will be interesting, challenging, and fun.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex180.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
Exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

Let’s start thinking about the upcoming SATERN Nationwide Digital Exercise. We’ll
need to work out the pathways and Operators necessary to get our traffic to the East
Coast by individual relays. Each of us will need to develop times, freqs, and Ops we
can work reliably. The outcome should result in dependable operators and pathways to
pass traffic station to station, coast to coast. Eventually, we’ll have known pathways
to pass traffic with nothing more than NBEMS software and a cadre of Amateur digital
Ops. By years end, we may appreciate the real-world value of this SATERN Exercise.

Here’s the SATERN Nationwide Digital Exercise URL: https://qso.com/satern/exercise.html
The exercise will begin with a single IC-213 message sent from Oregon by K7KY to Joe N0LSD
in New York. It will cross the country by relay between individual digital Operators using
only NBEMS software. When Joe receives the message, he’ll send an HTML copy to Ken

messages both ways. We should end up with workable times/paths/operators that can move
traffic efficiently with NBEMS software and individual digital Operators. This will be both
interesting and valuable. Start time is not yet determined, probably a week or two.

The ORCA Ck-In Relay Macro has changed. We’ve dropped ‘In&Out & QNX’. NCS will
determine ck-in status for relayed stations. Please replace the old Ck-In macros that
include, ‘In&Out’ or ‘QNX’, with the current macro.

:sb:63 Report Recommends National Framework for Public Health Response
:mg:733 With all the various “strategies” unfolding across the country to deal with the coronavirus outbreak, it would be helpful to collect data on what’s really

working and what’s not, but that isn’t in anyone’s playbook.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommends a ‘Science Framework’ to develop mechanisms for collecting evidence and for funding on a

continuous basis for consistent, evidence-based responses.

DE KG7FGT K

RR David tu BK Thats it for Traffic nice work in tough band condx the reason we relay files in FLAMP with the RELAY button only is becuz when you shift the file to the TX window, FLAMP assigns another check-sum number and we can’t fill the old file with that new file… BK

It looks like the ionosphere doesn’t like us much tonight.

I tried sending the FLAMP file unencoded tonight because it required fewer bytes to be sent than base64 encoding. I got the impression that this didn’t allow the file to be handled by FLAMP as normal. Am I correct?

I read some very sobering news about major flooding in China. There is concern that the massive 3 Gorges Dam may fail. This will lead to a catastrophic loss of lives also impact supply chains. If you are dependent upons something made in China you may want to stock up on that particular thing.

On a more positive note, the Johns Hopkins COVID19 site has graphs that look like the numbers of new cases for Oregon and California are starting to trend downward. Hopefully this is an inflection point and not just a local minimum.

I hope everyone stays safe, sane, and healthy. 73s all around. KG7FGT back to net.

RR David tnx for the detailed report we all like to learn abt our signals when u send in FLAMP as you did, I think it doesn’t use the block method but I’ve only tried it once years ago, so I’m uncertain abt that, someone else may have more info during comments. we lhope the 3 gorges dam holds it hard to imaging what would happen BK Next 4 Comments is Jaye KE6SLS < NCS

Bugger, was hoping to hear from Bruce kb7vx. We all need to think positive thoughts for Bruce’s truck!

Had another nice day here. Marine layer in morning, sun most day, marine layer this evening.

Lots of work here. Carl km6liq came over Friday and planted 4 8 foot metal poles in concrete. Next is raising 4 24 foot masts to hold me soon to be NEW antenna with gain! Pretty excited about it all. And yesterday I finally got amp on the air after all these months. Received very good signal reports from our nightly 75M net. Ham radio is fun!

Now I have to clean up all the mess. I love wireless, but where in the HECK did all these cables, wires, and stuff come from!!!!

Tnx for the update on the Saturn Ex test. Would be nice to make that into a message and send stand alone so we can save it on our desktops and get ready for the exercise!

28July2020 Covid19:

Trinity County 3 cases, 0 deaths
Mendocino County 265 cases, 6 deaths
Del Norte County 87 cases, 0 deaths
California 459,000 cases, 8,451 deaths

And even worse, we’re in fire danger. Today air tanker crashed just south of me, fortunatly, everyone walked away.
