What a net! A record number of check-ins and we still completed the net in 1.5 hours. Thanks to the stations that changed their Active status to CALL*, helping keep the net to reasonable length. The band was much improved from the past couple of months. Also, I’d like to thank all of you for your thoughtful check ins… giving us time to respond and not swamping NCS with multiple coat-tails. For some reason, I had annoying difficulty controlling my cursor while copying content in the RX window to build the FLMSG roster.

Doug K7KY used PSK63RC4 (220wpm,330hz) with great results for the FLAMP exercise confirming 6 stations in the first pass. He CONFIRMED the remaining stations with PSK250R (220wpm,250hz,80%).

Tonight’s Optional Exercise asked, “What do you think of permitting brief buy/sell radio gear ads in the Traffic round practice-traffic?” We appreciate all of your comments regarding this idea. After more discussion, we’ve decided against this change. ORCA is working well. We don’t want to diminish our focus on net operations. Trading radio gear with trusted colleagues is an attractive possibility and we’re thinking of other options, like adding a classified section to the website. That would enable wider exposure w/o altering net activities. We’ll keep you posted.

Welcome back to Don WA6NBG in Eureka,CA, an ORCA Plank Owner. Don was with us in the early days when left the VHF ORCA EMERGENCY NET to form HF ORCA DIGITAL NET. In those days, we checked in on Phone, then QSY’d to the data band  to pass traffic, then QSY’d back to Phone for the Comment round. We were all learning how to communicate efficiently on a hot keyboard. We quickly realized we needed a tactic to avoid Doubles. And,  we didn’t know enough about handling emergency traffic in digital modes. Thus began our journey into organizing a Directed digital net and learning the tools of the NBEMS suite. ORCA has greatly evolved in the past seven years. Even though Don is a Founding Member, we checked him ‘In&Out’ tonight. ORCA DIGITAL NET is much different than when Don’s FT-857 expired and left him w/o HF access.  Even Don may need to monitor a session or two to catch up!

Remember: The Western Digital Net Roundtable w/Steve K6ETA @ 0330z/1930p, 3.581, on Thursday.  This will be the last Roundtable before WDN debuts  in February.  WDN will need a critical mass of Operators to succeed.  We are the Operators that can bring WDN to life; we’re Steve’s partners. The success of WDN will be a major plus for ORCA DIGITAL NET.

Another bonus for Western Digital Net is the discovery that FLMSG can generate an alternate RadioGram file in Plain Text  (*.txt) that resonates with the NTS system.  No custom forms needed. Passing RadioGram traffic to NTS nets will be routine.

Thanks for taking time to work with us tonight. We hope to see you all on the WF again soon.

73,
Mindy W7ZAP

ANNOUNCEMENTS 28/Jan/2020

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex154.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that
file to NCS in the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

Again last Thurs, ten stations checked in with Steve K6ETA for the WDN Roundtable.
Band condx were difficult, but better than the previous session. If you missed that
session, try to work this Thursday’s RoundTable. Steve is energetically spearheading
the WDN project. It’s a big undertaking. Our support will help generate initial
participation and momentum.

We shouldn’t have any problems passing RadioGram traffic to digital NTS nets.
FLMSG will also create the file as a text document(.txt). Phone, CW, and Digital
nets are currently working with RadioGram .txt files. We’ve no need for custom
FLMSG forms. FLMSG outputs a .txt file from the top bar menu, ‘File/View/Plain
Text’. That’s all it takes to generate a RadioGram .txt file that resonates with NTS.

We’re considering a small change to our practice-traffic guidelines. We always
want to keep these files brief. Practice is our prime agenda; message content
is secondary. That said, we are considering using practice traffic to occasionally
list members’ buy/sell announcements for used Amateur radio gear. Many Amateurs
routinely buy and sell radio equipment. We have the advantage of knowing each other.
It removes most of the used-gear trading risk. We would limit practice-traffic listing
to one item or related items like radio/tuner/key, etc. This should dissuade equipment
traders from joining to sell gear. Your thoughts and observations will help us determine
the merit of this idea.

Once more, in case you missed this FLDIGI TIP: Press ESCAPE to instantly stop a Macro.

Good net tonight!
What do you think of permitting brief buy/sell radio gear ads in the Traffic round practice-traffic?

I am OK with it as long as people keep it short and don’t have a large number of items and it not a regular event

Had a great time at Winter Field Day! It was a bit cold at night, but we had fun making contacts. Overall the club made around 150 contacts including Doug K7KY and Mindy W7ZAP! Thanks for the contacts! Had fun talking with you!

Signals are GREAT for hearing NCS tonight. My comments only included signals I was able to hear at this station while on ORCA net frequency.

Last night’s Humboldt county emergency digital net was fun, almost all stations were DX stations! Later, I called the WCC net on 3970MHz at 9pm and figured it would be a bust, but ended up on the air until 11:30pm last night. You can never call the propagation!

We did have fun at WFD this past weekend. You guys would have LOVED seeing the set up! I heard the Utah special event on digi, but they never found me :(

Need to contact Bruce kb7xv? find out what freqs he used for winlink down here!

Thank you all, 73 and have a GREAT week.

< K6ETA SRI, strange freeze!Luckily I had a copy paste here it is!

Update on the Western Digital Net (WDN).

We now have a solid path to forward NTSD radiograms! Any Radiogram created in FLMsg will be forwarded via the Northern California packet backbone, then relayed as needed over the NTSD network. We are ready to relay!

Thanks to the ORCA Ops and some other UF NBEML agnkeinalte ae e s,id r:0lish`n—om g dp if 2-jn HF sittionetvailable to relay and participate.

Our mission has settled into a West-of-the-Rockies Traffic neiWith brief traffic as well as Space WX and regional alerts and bulletins of interest. This new net endeavors to reach out to the Amateur radio stations and provide traffic service:

— In timel of pooh ade propagaHon;
— In circumstances where accurate information needs to get through;
— And for stations in challenging situations.

We serve the entire amateur radio community and can use our NBEMS capabilities and relay locations to assist voice nets, mobile stations, QRP stations and to check DX and propagation. And of course, we use the well-established ORCA standards for net protocol! We could not do this without ORCA!

Please join us on Thursdays on this frequency at 1930 PST / 0330z ! Come with your reports, relays and messages — and we’ll see you there! < K6ETA

K6ETA < W7ZAP Very fast TX! Will have to read later!

That was an interesting twist in the flmsg Radiogram form. I would never have thought to use File|View to save a file, but it worked just fine by way of Windows Notepad. I will have to remember that one.

Regarding propagation this evening — sunspots are back! SN = 18. And flux is up a little too.

Think the idea of buying and selling is okay maybe once a month if sellers share why they want to sell something.

This is my first time operating alone…and I have a lot to learn!. It looks like my radiogram did not make it through…I was able to fill it out but had trouble after that. Got lost somewhere when I tried to save it. I will get some help before the next net…hopefully KG7D Greg will get me on track.

Then next week

Great to have you working w/us Diana. The exercise was a bit more complicated tonight. BTW ur signal is BOOMING S9 +15 13dB

Lots of good information posted in those groups! As well as lots of good infromation on this net with this group. And congratulations to Diana KJ7GVY. Tonight is the first net she worked from her home station, all alone and without any help.

I was supprised how many signals I saw and heard during WFD. Had an apointment on Saturday but, made a handfull of contacts on Sunday. Had fun even if it was only from home. Hope you all had fun also.

On a side note; I turned my power up from 10w to 25w in the middle of transmitting my traffic round reply. It wasn’t propagation, it was me…

Another fun and intersting net, the two of you do a great job of coming up with questions, tips and excercises. thank you,

Thanks for the comments Greg. I saw you posted to the FLDIGI group… lots of useful ideas and info there

Welcome back to Don WA7NBG in Eureka,CA. Don is an ORCA Founding Member. He’ll recall the early days when we took ck-ins and comments by Phone. It’s great to have him on the roster tonight.

Please give the used radio gear idea in practice-traffic some careful thought. While it would be a useful service, it may also create unintended issues. We don’t want to create a swapmeet, for sure, but we thought that occasional buy/sell text would not effect net time. Ops would include contact-info so interested people would contact them off/after net. Food 4 thought…

Again, please keep ck-in simple; see the Preamble. We’re geting more ck-ins these days. We only need your callsign if you’ve been here b4. Or, ‘callsign in&out’

Please don’t send multiple lines @ ck-in. Thanks for helping us manage the net.

And, I had a great WFD. CW WFD/160cwTest, and some Phone and Data too. I worked W7U, Rainbow Canyon ARC too! This AM I worked South Africa on 20m digital.

I appreciate Greg KG7D’s comments on the exercise questions. They’re hard to keep interesting every wk. The band is surprising tonight. We CONFIRMED 6 stations with one pass of PSK63-RC4. BTN K7KY
