Wow… that was a lot of fun! Great turn out, solid band condx, mode changes and fun traffic mostly about members’ portable digital HF stations & their antennas… what’s not to love?? ORCA welcomes AB0DK David from Kirksville,MO and KD7TTT Terry from Cedar City,UT and returning to the net is KA7FOO Doug who’s been busy training new digital Ops in Reno,NV. A lot of training going on; KE6SLS Jaye and KB6NN Howard have also been training new digital Ops in Eureka,CA as well as WA6HHE Brad in Cedar City,UT. Some solid knowledge being shared for sure. Nice work guys.

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise struck a chord and saw numerous stations respond. K7KY Doug asked, ‘Do you have a portable digital HF station? Briefly, describe the antenna.’ Since the net log shows the encoded replies, I’m posting the responses below. Also there are more replies from stations who missed the traffic round, but wanted to participate. You’ll find those in the net log.

W1EEP: yes I have 2 Radios that I use for my Portable rig I use and three postion on a large Magent with 3 whip antenna works great thanks for the net

K6QOG: Yes an 80m dipole with a 20 ft slide up pole with guys

KB6BB: I have done digital from stationary mobile using the HF rig in the car.

KE6SLS: Negative, my portable rig is now supporting a new ham and making his life much more FUN.

KF7YRS: YES, AND MY ANTENNA IS A 46 FOOT END FED WIRE WITH A 26 FOOT COUNTERPOISE

KR7KR: I have the equipment but have not set up an HF portable station. I have an Icom 706MKII and a signal link, a laptop computer and a military adjustable dipole antenna (similar to a tape measure antenna)

Here’s tonight’s test image decoded in UT:

RX: W1EEP UT

Doug and I are enjoying trading NCS roles each week. It’s causing us to look at ways we do things differently, and that’s kind of exciting… learning new things about FLDIGI… learning more about communicating. This certainly is a learning net. We appreciate working with each of you. Thanks for joining us and sharing your enthusiasm for Amateur digital radio. Hope to see you on the WF again soon.
73,
Mindy W7ZAP

ANNOUNCEMENTS 27 March 2018

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex62.txt’, a digital
-traffic and file-manipulation exercise. Complete the instructions
and send the file to NCS during TRAFFIC round using FLAMP, or
send your own practice traffic or QRU.

Early Ck-In now starts at the top of the hour, 1900p/0200z; the net begins
at 1930p/0230z as usual. Increasing participation is putting a little pressure
on net routines. 25+ check-ins won’t hinder the net when many are ‘in&out’.
We note that some members who usually have practice traffic are QRU on busy
nights. They’re holding their traffic for next week to keep the net moving.
Thanks for helping us manage net-time. We hope to retain the current level of
engagement as participation increases. Much can be learned by monitoring
the net and we can support unlimited monitoring stations.

Doug and I continue to trade NCS duties every other week. It’s an opportunity
to press myself beyond my comfort zones and extend my skill sets. Typing,
thinking ahead, maintaining net flow, and succinct communications are my areas
of focus.

Net Report posted as soon as we can…

Wow, the band has been amazing for me here tonight. What a nice treat. So great hearing all of you ORCA new folks!

Lots of sun today, so the operating batteries are in good shape!

Last week, I was going to monitor, however, went I finished RAIN, I came into the shack to find radio buzzing. Batteries were so low the radio quit shortly after the

start of the net.. BAD JAYE! :(

Your a great NCS Mindy. I think you were pretty darned busy tonight trying to get all the check-ins! Still, GREAT WORK!

More, I really love the way you set up the roster, in/out tabbed, active left justified. Very good idea TU!

BTW, I did send the flamp at 70 watts tonight, since I upped the speed. Sending comments at 50 watts.

Wow, big ole net tonight. Here’s a great big PAT ON THE BACK girl! Great work Mindy.

Thanks Jaye for the kind words. Yes ck-in tonite was hopping! It was fun and I’m enjoying NCS duties. Especially when Doug is feeling good and we dont have an

Glad to be in the net again.

This Saturday is “Finals Day” for my students.
Will be graduating 6 more student. Will turn them over to
Bob, WA6MTY, our Washoe County EC.

Looks like I have been missing some fun. A lot of
new callsigns. Understand the Marc, K7HMR, Reno is
comming on board. Glad to see the growth in Digital
Communitations!

On the relay I could not get the software to
send the one block. So …. it was all or nuttin’!

Most everybody has a good signal into Reno. All FLAMP
traffic received 100%, including Brad’s MFSK64 message.
Though I got a “Seems to be Binary Data” error. Jaye’s
message at MFSK64 came through OK.

See all you Digi-Hams next week.

Traffic round is a good place to experiment with a faster mode as you are only talking to NCS u don’t have to fill the whole net… this is how we will become

familiar with the mode features… Good to see Doug KA7FOO back again and nice of him to train more digital Ops… Also, welcome back to Ralph WB6SDR who is

in&out tonite… It too wonder what in the water in Cedar City to produce so many digital Ops.. back to net < K7KY

Great comments Doug. Thanks and I meant to respond to Jaye’s comment about the new roster format for in&out stns… Doug came up with that and it’s been really helpful

for us and I think everyone. Very intuitive. BREAK
