Band condx tonight were both difficult and strange. Besides lots of noise, we had one-way paths, working paths that soon closed, etc. Early Ck-In had us questioning my rebuild of the 210′ Doublet. It’s usually our strongest antenna, but for Early Ck-In, the 135′ Doublet left it hanging. Mindy was copying signals I didn’t hear or see. What’s up? Turned out to be stranger condx than usual. Don KJ7VGV/P is normally 100% from the cabin on both antennas, but only Mindy copied him 100% during Early Ck-In. Still, his Relays helped complete the Roster. Condx did improve as the evening progressed, but anomalies persisted.

We needed MFSK-22 to CONFIRM traffic for some stations. When we’re working MFSK-22, you know it’s a tough band. We would have had even more difficulty if we were a single Net Control Station. Some signals, neither of us copied. Still, we completed all net operations in reasonable time. Tough band condx highlight the depth of ORCA Ops experience and skills. We flowed thru difficult condx with aplomb. Our experience running the net together enabled us to maintain net flow with few disruptions. It was both difficult and satisfying. It’s a pleasure to work with focused and capable Ops. Ops that practice in all condx will be comfortable and capable when time is critical and condx are difficult.

Just before Jaye KE6SLS suggested NCS send TxID twice for Mode changes, I’d remarked to Mindy that our colleagues are very comfortable and competent with frequent Mode changes. Some digital nets always announce mode change before changing. This routine dismisses the utility and efficiency of RSID and wastes net time. We practice with all the NBEMS tools. We want to leverage NBEMS tools to maximum advantage.

There are times, and tonight is an example, when RSID stumbles. It normally works very well, enabling FLDIGI to switch Modes automatically w/o Operator intervention. The RSID signal is concentrated in about 200hz. If you’re using MFSK-32 @ 35w, your signal occupies 630hz, but your 35w TxID is concentrated in 200hz. That signal is usually better copied than digital content @ 35w/630hz. Because RSID is brief, it’s more easily compromised by HF noise. Overall, it works very well and savvy Ops rely on it to switch modes quickly without intervention.

For Mindy & I, TxID is a discretionary task.We manage TxID manually and by Macro. TxID x2 is usually unnecessary, but in difficult condx it can be critical for automatic mode change. We always send TxID x2 in NBEMS Exercises where Mode changes 3-5 times and the pace is brisk. We don’t automatically send TxID x2 for every Mode change throughout the net, but try to be mindful of when it’s needed. Tonight, we shifted Net Control back & forth countless times throughout the net. We were preoccupied with net flow.

Here’s our tactic for missing TxID. We have Macro buttons for oft-used Modes. When the RSID decoder misses, we usually recognize the Mode and tap the associated Macro button. Bingo, we’ve missed very little and usually CONFIRM the file. Here’s another important tactic: always send the FLAMP Header, block 0, twice for ORCA operations. Tonight, one station sent the Exercise file with a single Header. We both missed TxID but still copied the file because we quickly switched modes manually. For this net, you should enable ‘Hdr Rpt’ x2 in FLAMP. When working with a single station in reasonable condx, a single TxID is sufficient.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise features an FLMSG Blank form. Next week, the 1st Tues in July, Bruno KG7VVN will conduct
the NBEMS Exercise. Bruno and Don KJ7VGV alternate conducting 1st Tuesday NBEMS Exercises. They significantly
increased their digital skill sets; they’ll be more comfortable under pressure and can manage a wider range of traffic-handling tasks.

Speaking of increasing digital skills, Don, Jaye KE6SLS, & Brad WA7HHE are doing a great job as Western Digital
Net/NCS. Our pool of capable Net Control Stations is expanding. ORCA/WDN Ops are ready to help you acquire these
skills too. If you’re comfortable working the ORCA NBEMS Exercise, you have the foundation skills necessary to learning the NBEMS Exercise & WDN/NCS routines. We encourage your participation.

Sunday morning we visited our local colleagues, Pelican Bay ARC’s Field Day @ Harbor Fire Station. They had a number
of RVs, radio trailers, and a PBARC information table. We’ve not seen our local radio friends since the onset of Operation COVID. It was good to see them in person again. Sam KJ7RRV asked us about passing digital traffic VHF>HF. He works with the original ORCA EMERGENCY NET(VHF). Although that net prefers acoustic coupling, some Ops use Signalink. They recently practiced passing traffic VHF > HF. Sam is interested in connecting HF digital traffic to the local VHF digital net. We invited Sam to work with ORCA. He may eventually become a Western Digital Net liaison station, linking his local VHF net to WDN/HF. It would be good to have WDN liaison stations linking local VHF digital nets.

A day may come when our task will be networking widespread Amateur communities. WDN’s wide HF coverage can
easily connect numerous VHF digital nets. VHF Liaison stations would move pertinent traffic to/from their local VHF
digital nets. This capacity is currently latent. We could implement it quickly. Many ORCA/WDN Ops belong to local ARCs with VHF digital nets.

Was a fun field day, we started setup at 8am Saturday, got up and running at 11am, I worked an ICOM 718 on a
10/15/20 beam doing digital.  I got 303 digital contacts in the 24 hours, only getting 3 hours of sleep from 3am to
6am.  Also got the W1AW digital bulletin in PSK31 which is worth a bunch of points.

Mil Tower with Beam https://m42.pw/u/W
Club Trailer https://m42.pw/u/X

Also got a QSL card in mail today from my first voice contact on extra band :D

it’s getting old with the marine layer never leaving.

Cndx are cantankerous!  At check-in, no copy on: kg7vvn wb7eux or

again.  At least lightning crashes aren’t so bad tonight.

Again, NCS sent FLA in different modes, but then changed back to MFSK23
for REPORTS.  I have two computers monitoring and both machines failed
to copy the single TxID when returning to MFSK32.  Solution: Use
Twin-TxID macro.

Good work on the RELAY for Dennis!

Last Tuesday band conditions were terrible in Reno. I was not able to copy the exercise file till K7KY
resent the file twice after an attempt at a relay sending the file. I also have not been able to copy
KE6SLS Monday night net for almost 4 weeks. However Jaye confirmed he received my TX. Can’t wait till
the band improves as the Reno antenna worked great for two years. The Crickets are still here at the cabin
and my attempts to stop them from eating my tree has not gone well. The stinking aspect is they are not even
eating the weeds out here. So far the garden has survived with the existing walls made of plastic and metal.

Got me on the .b2s blank form I sent .txt blank form already fixed on desktop.

Just after I sent my Traffic Exercise, the computer shut down due to ovwerheating. At least it THINKS it is
overheating. Not sure if NCS Confirmed my exercise? Apologies.

Fire Season has technically started here today. The helicopters were flying most og the afternoon dropping water
buckets on a ridge nearby and I could hear the play-by-play over my local scanner. Hoping it will be less impactful
this year after all the rain we had and the cooler than average temps.

aeaR4v L¸Very interesting results, John.   Once we both copied the header, we had 100%.  We’re doing very well
and we’ve not needed Olivia yet this Summer.  Anything else? < K7KYdn i    tß u eeB

That’s all for me. I have also had the experience of reporting PREAMBLE and then learning I had received all the
blocks EXcept fo rthe preamble. Maybe flamp should be a little smarterm about reporting what it has and what it
hasn’t! Thanks. 73. < KS6M
