Another evening of useful propagation. The spike in solar activity gave us a welcome boost tonight. I was excited to think I’d increased my ck-in record from 25 to 26, but discovered I’d listed Aaron KI7LOQ twice.  He was the ninth ck-in; I logged him Active when he sent ‘de KI7LOQ’, and again when he was contacting Dave K7DV. Later, he Rechecked in&out and I changed his status and also listed him again. My error there. So, there were only 25 check-ins tonight. Mindy W7ZAP holds the ORCA ck-in record of 27 stations. She made that record on her first night as NCS,in February 2017!

Mindy also made another first tonight. She wrapped the FLAMP exercise in two rounds. Gene W1EEP withdrew in the first round and all remaining Ops were CONFIRMED in the 2nd round.  Had Gene remained, he probably would have CONFIRMED the third round in MFSK-32.  It’s the first time we’ve not needed three rounds to complete the exercise, even when the band was much better. It’s a sweet reminder of how easy digital operations can be when band condx are favorable.

The Net Report Image section is becoming more useful, thanks to those who email the two band evaluation images. It’s interesting to see how condx either improve or degrade for different Ops as the net progresses. Oddly, some stations in the same vicinity experience opposite conditions.  Generally, the closer stations do better early in the net while more distant stations experience improvement later in the net, but this is not consistent for everyone. Understanding propagation is a long study. Please send images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com so we both receive them. Locating and emailing images is useful practice in manipulating message files in the PC OS.

Ck-In was busy tonight. Thanks for spacing your calls. VidID is also helpful at Ck-In.  We can see VidIDs on either side of 1500, even while someone is printing there. Large horizontal characters are easier to parse quickly, enabled by deselecting all five options in CONFIG/ID/Video. Disabling ‘500 Hz limit’ and ‘Mode width limit’ enables horizontal text. Horizontal characters all remain on the WF together, while vertical disappear one by one. We have more time to catch the whole CALL when printed horizontally.

Here’s a VidID macro that prints at 2000wf and returns the cursor to the current mode/freq.  It’s easily modified.

Thanks to your focus and attention, the net was brisk and efficient. Band condx have a major impact on net length. Tonight, we had time to take Comments from monitoring stations and still wrapped it up in an hour fifteen minutes. I was hoping to catch a couple late ck-ins after comments and tie or possibly exceed Mindy’s record, but it wasn’t to be.  I should be careful what I wish for. We enjoyed working with you tonight and hope to see you again next Tuesday evening. 73 Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS 27/Aug/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex134.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLAMP/
FLMSG exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file
to NCS in the Traffic round with FLAMP.

ORCA participation is growing steadily this year. As we attract more digital
Operators, it becomes harder to complete the net in a reasonable amount of time.
We prefer to finish in an hour; 1.5hr is our outter limit. ORCA format engages
each active ck-in at three points each session. We’re closely simulating Traffic
and Emergency nets and it’s time consuming. Besides being a long net overall, it
means extended periods of inactivity for each station.

We’re considering alternative methods to maintain net format and accomodate
increasing participation. One idea is limiting the number of stations working the
FLAMP exercise to 10-12. We recently had 11 stations in the FLAMP exercise and
it went very well. With a weaker band, 10 stations might be impossible to CONFIRM
in three rounds.

The FLAMP exercise generates technical traffic-handling tasks for the Traffic round.
When you can’t CONFIRM the FLAMP exercise message, you’ll need a brief practice
message handy or send QRU. Sending QRU during the Traffic round helps reduce net-
time when we’re busy. Steve K6ETA does this frequently. He’s been with us for years
and knows the routines perfectly; he defers to newer Ops when the net is large. With
more than 10 Active Ck-Ins we could ask a couple of our veterans to sit-out the
Exercise and save a little net time for the newer members. We would track those asked
to defer so they won’t be sitting-out again next week. Let us know your thoughts and
suggestions.

Wow, this digital stuff never ceases to amaze me. I’m hearing stations and getting 599 copy from as far away as Farmington, NM , lots from UT , Nampa ID, Vancouver WA, etc. No way this could work with CW. Thanks and best wishes to all. Until next time, 73’s from Bruce in Fortuna, CA.

FB Bruce ur right abt the band reminds me of old times and I hope it begins to return soon Next is Greg KG7D < NCS

Sorry about he double check in. Was having radio problems. Every time I change microphones my radio changes the digital setting from USB to ACC port. I think I need to call Icom about that one.

Spent the weekend working the Kansas QSO Party. Had fun chasing down all the 1×1 stations. Couldn’t hear K0R or KS0KS, and couldn’t find W0R. So I was on “R” short of spelling Yellow brick road. Thats just the way it goes some days….

Once again, a good net. Thank you.
