Band condx were average-poor again this evening. We connected near-by stations much better than distant stations. Last week, Lamar AE6LJ in Redway,CA was the only one of six stations to CONFIRM the NBEMS Exercise 1st pass in PSK-500R. Tonight he did it again, joined by Jaye KE6SLS & Matt N6FPV. All three stations are relatively co-located in Northern California, about 100mi from NCS in Brookings,OR. 2nd pass in THOR-50×1 CONFIRMED two stations further North in Oregon & Washington. 3rd pass in MFSK-32 was needed to CONFIRM stations in Utah. Band condx tonight were typical for this Summer.

Again this evening, some found the NBEMS Exercise instructions lacked clarity. I understand the importance of clear & concise instructions. We may not be able to implement faulty instructions. Last week’s instructions directed you to ‘send’ the Exercise Macro. For some, it wasn’t clear if this meant send Macro content or Execute the Macro. I should have used,’Execute’; it’s unambiguous.

In this week’s Exercise, some were unfamiliar with the term, ‘Preamble’. Preamble is expository text preceding a document or event. A summary of what’s to come, so to speak. ‘Preamble’ is almost onomatopoetic. Our Preamble always begins with a time-stamp and, ‘WELCOME to ORCA DIGITAL NET’. Preambles are not necessarily labeled ‘Preamble’, but are easily recognized by position and content. Our preamble explains the upcoming net. It’s been transmitted at the beginning of every ORCA net for years.

From a practice perspective, our NBEMS Exercises are working well. Note that most irregularities occur in implementing Exercise instructions. Today, incoming Ops come up to speed w/NBEMS Exercises quickly. That’s primarily due to the skill and expertise of net stations presenting a working example every Tuesday evening. They create an outstanding learning environment for motivated newbies. We have few glitches related to actual traffic-handling.

Tasks and questions within the Exercise serve numerous purposes beside realism. Improving reading comprehension is always helpful. Learning to locate and manipulate stored files is part of digital traffic-handling. Working complex tasks while tracking NCS and your place in Rotation enhances focus and attention. There’s a lot more to digital traffic-handling than we can glean from Manuals. Your regular participation demonstrates many undocumented traffic-handling strategies, tactics, and conventions. Without you, we wouldn’t be an effective training net. Thanks so much for your ongoing participation and support. It’s a pleasure to work with you.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise uses a generic Text Editor instead of FLMSG. Plain Text Editors output smaller files than FLMSG; FLMSG files contain control characters that generates labels, categories, tables, etc. When time is critical, and information value trumps form, plain-text files are in order. They require less TX time and can be read w/any text editor. Next session is another 1st Tuesday. The NBEMS Exercise will be conducted by Don KJ7VGV.

Last week’s ORCA NBEMS Exercise had a couple flaws. I forgot two key Macro Tags necessary for the Macro to work as intended. It should have included  &  to send TxID for the change to MFSK-64 and turn TxID off when TX ended. I also erred in the instructions. The error prevented one Op from working the Exercise. A QNX Op who monitored the net emailed us explaining what he found confusing. If you worked the Exercise or monitored the net, your thoughts on what was unclear or confusing would be useful. Email: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com or Comment Round.

Missing TxID isn’t unusual. HF noise can easily scramble TxID signals; occasionally, the sending station forgets. Even w/o TxID, it’s possible to CONFIRM the transmission when you’re prepared. Focus on the signal; if mode has changed you have a few seconds to change mode manually.

We have Macro buttons for most-used Modes, enabling us to change mode quickly. When you must open and scan the Mode list, it takes a lot longer. With Mode buttons in your Macro set, you can change modes instantly with a mouse click. Sending FLAMP Headers 2x is the tactic that gives stations more time to change mode manually.

ORCA < WB7EUX – I spent a few hours stretched out over the past week working on revising macro sets. This task was made easier by reviewing macro sets provided by Doug K7KY. I organized the macros I use into separate files depending on the activity. I now have macro files for ORCA, WDN, Humbolt County, SITORB, and WEFAX. This makes switching to a dedicated set of tasks effortless. Previously I had a hodge podge of macros strewn across several rows of buttons making for confusing operation.

Chief Joseph Days Rodeo week is underway with events starting tomorrow. We avoid the downtown area any time after 9AM now through Sunday and choose routes in and out of Joseph that are far away from activities. It’s like tourist season on steroids. 🙁

Thanks to Doug and Mindy for another educational net.

All is well. 73 de WA7JYK

A feature I love about my TS-2000 is that, while in memory channel mode, I can twist and turn and buWp my VFO knob all I want without it having any effect on TX freq. With the tap of a single button, though, I can send the memory freq. to the VFO for tweaking without actually changing the memory freq. One tap sends it right back. Love this old rig!

}SiPfbnjass]FB Jaye   anything else?   & what u think abt no name for the Preamble?   I’m surprised so many Ops didn’t understand what the preamble is. It’s exactly the same every session.  I’ve not seen anyone label the preamble  ‘Preamble’ but maybe I’m behind on this too
btu  < K7KYetn

No, don’t need any more fills.  Glad u were able to cpy April so much better.  I need to work with her some more on mastering her matchbox when she shifts freqs.   Poor radio!

As for preamble.   Will, unless you have been an NCS and WRITTEN a preable, then it will be ambiguous for the net.  You need to get confortable as a NCS. Right now, there are two NCS that are actually comfortable.  And two more that require more time in the saddle.   So that’s why I think it’s easy for the net to kind of have ?? when you request a para of preamble. They have never really thought through the whole process of being NCS from NCS point of view.

That is why I am so glad we got Brad and Don onboard for NCS. They are both great ops, and I hope over the next year, they will find that comfort mode and sort of feel at home and not feel under pressure being NCS.

This stuff goes fast and it really takes a mentality that has to find it’s comfort zone and each player finds it in their own time.  I really don’t think it’s something that can be taught so much as just LIVED and learned in the saddle.

RR ur right & tnx 4 the thought.   I ran into trouble awhile back with Sentence & Paragraph.     I’m older than I thijnki, it seems.   really young people today have not much reading comprehension    probably becuz they have little need to read   so much is available by turning on the PC.  Anyway, I’m not thinking to label the preamble     it should be easy to recognize as it begins w/the same sentence every week for abr 9yrs now ([:   anyway, tnx for the thoughts  btu  < K7KY

hahaha.   No worries.  I am thinking a good course in programming will help the average person become one with comprehension 😄 And Parsing!    code takes no captives… hahahaha.

Anyway, it’s always been an issue and will long be an issue and practice is the one known tool to assist in raising that level of understanding. And it is fun 😄

Will good net tonight.  Signals are improvig with my copy on Utah stations.  Another 3 weeks or so and I will probably have 100% on them again and looking forward to that.

Oh, now I know Dennis likes CW, I’ll have to see if we can find time to work each other CW.  I would enjoy that.

Have a good dinner.  I’ll send in my image report shortly.  TU agn and have a cool night.

k7ky de ke6sls k

PuuoFB Jaye   Dennis was in a group of Rainbows Canyon ARC Ops studying CW, so there may be more Ops you know in Cedar City to CW with.  I’m not too concerned abt who knows the Preamble or not. They are all doing outstanding with actual digital traffic handling and that’s what the net is about.   Exercise questions are useful to practice parsing and implementing instructions and good 4 me to practice writing them.   Tnx for your insight & support, Jaye…   I’m already eating my noodles   cu soon  73 Doug K7Krtn
