Band condx were difficult tonight, degraded by the CME impact of yesterday’s solar flares. We printed a few stations 100% that couldn’t copy us well enough to work the net. We often have usable path in only one direction. We hear Idaho stations well, but they’re unable to copy us. We used to have solid path with Dave K7DV in Idaho, but the last few months has been mostly one-way in our favor. Some stations completely missed the first test image. By net-end, everyone copied the image. We needed more Relay assistance tonight than usual too. Imagine how these condx effect Phone nets. Data modes really shine in adverse band condx.

We had more doubles than usual tonight; it’s not surprising given band condx. Only Good Fortune avoids doubling stations we don’t copy. Stuff happens. NCS caused a few doubles by forgetting to pre-tone during the Monitor’s Session. Overall, the net went smoothly and we wrapped the main session earlier than usual. Four stations stuck around for the after-net Monitor’s Session and our total net time was only 1hr/37min. Everyone appreciates the stations that ck-in QNX, work the FLAMP Exercise silently, and CONFIRM their work in the after-net Monitor’s Session. This keeps the main session to a reasonable length, and enables incoming stations to practice the exercise w/o feeling pressured in the live Exercise.

The FLAMP Exercise was unusual tonight. We wrapped with only two passes. Four of six stations CONFIRMED the first pass in MFSK-64. Brad WA7HHE relayed the file in THOR-50×1 to CONFIRM the other two stations. No need for the third pass, an unusual occurrence. Everyone did well with the ADVANCED Exercise too. More important than the Exercise files are the traffic-handling routines we’re practicing. Emergency traffic usually includes handling instructions. Parsing instructions correctly is fundamental to implementing them correctly.

Tonight’s Exercise also brings up an ORCA gray-area: QRU. QRU means, I have no Traffic. When checking into a digital Traffic net, QRU means, No Traffic, but I’ll participate in net operations. QRU is not an ORCA Ck-In option; we don’t work regular traffic. But, QRU is the correct response for Active ORCA Ops who haven’t completed the ADVANCED Exercise when NCS calls them for Traffic. Our Traffic Round serves to complete traffic-handling routines begun in the FLAMP Exercise. All ADVANCED Exercises are Optional. If you don’t work them or haven’t completed one by Traffic Round, send QRU.

Upcoming FLAMP Exercise questions will explore path quality between net stations. We want to know more about usual path quality between net stations. At NCS, we already have a useful mental map of path between net members. It helps us select the best Relay station for the FLAMP Exercise. We’d like to learn more and share the info with net members. It will help choose the best relay path quickly when speed is essential. Ultimately, we’d like to develop a network-path map. We may have a member capable of turning this information into a simple read-at-a-glance graphic. That would be cool.

We’re making good progress with Macro development. Bruce KB7VX has already implemented the <FILE> Macro that makes compiling comments easier and works for all digital nets that take Comments. New components for the Macro page are nearly complete. We’re waiting to hear from those reviewing the Alpha version of our downloadable Macro file.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex221.txt’, including an ADVANCED Exercise. If you complete the ADVANCED Exercise, send it when NCS calls you for Traffic. CONFIRM 100% copy of the primary file before working the ADVANCED Exercise. Monitoring stations can FILL or CONFIRM Exercise files in the after-net Monitor’s Session.

We relayed for the 20m Digital Net again on Saturday. Band condx were not favorable and we only collected two ck-ins in our 15mins. Our long doublets are not optimum for 20m. Again this week, we had only the same four stations supporting the net. We’ve obviously misjudged the importance of sustaining this digital training net. Summertime usually brings a big increase in activities for many families. This year is unusual with the arrival of a global pandemic. It’s unsettled the world population. Without Relay support, the 20m Digital Net will not survive. The loss will be greater for Eastern digital Ops. Out west, we have three digital training nets and an actual digital Traffic net on 3.581, Monday through Thursday, every week.

There’s no Macro Exercise in the weekly FLAMP Exercise tonight. We’re working on new content for the website Macros page and developing an outline for Macro exercises. Soon, we should have the new content active, including a downloadable macro set with ORCA, WDN, and QSO macros. It has lots of blank buttons for experimenting and developing new macros. The macro set is designed to interact with your existing set of macros, so you can switch between the two sets seamlessly.

a nice day without wind, which has taken a toll on amateur radio antenna’s in the area. Tomorrow the wind picks back up and we go back into a Red Flag Warning. This got me thinking, if we all value our mobile transceivers and call-signs on our license plates we might want to be aware of the new automatic license plate recognition camera systems from Flock Safety, are set up all around the country and can now be activated by an Amber Alert to alert law enforcement when they capture footage of our stolen vehicle. Might even be able to recover one of our kids. See:https://www.govtech.com/em/safety/license-plate-readers-add-real-time-alerts-for-missing-kids

NCS < WB7EUX – Thanks for another opportunity to train. One of the best parts of my week. My CSU precipitation observation site may have a fairly rare event occur tonight. That is recording more then one inch of precipitation in a 24 hour period. It has only happened twice since I have been an observer. The guage now has 0.85 inches in it. Most of the rain was late this afternoon. I’m hoping!
