How did you do decoding the weekly FLAMP QRP exercise? QRP?! Yes, Doug K7KY’s transmissions were all sent at 5w. This was an accident discovered following the net, but very informative about the modes, most notably MFSK-64 and MFSK-32. We thought stations were having difficulty copying due to the band, but turns out Doug’s power was at 5w from checking in with Jaye KE6SLS, NCS of the Humboldt HF Digital Emergency Net, on Monday night. It’s amazing that everyone CONFIRMED, although we couldn’t have done it without a relay from Brad WA7HHE, who was surely using more than 5w!

The need for relays has been increasing with poor band conditions. It adds to the learning environment for a directed digital net. We’re always impressed how few doubles ORCA has, even in terrible conditions. Thanks to you all for your focus and attention.

Lately, versions of FLDIGI/FLMSG have had issues and there have been numerous revisions in the past couple of months. Doug recently had issues with his FLMSG 4.1.03 & 4.1.04, and reverted back to 4.0.18. I currently use FLDIGI 4.0.16, FLMSG 4.0.7, FLAMP 2.2.03 without issue. You may recall Greg KG7DMI having issues with FLAMP ceasing transmission mid-file on a number of occasions. He wrote to Doug and said, “After some testing, it seems that the version of Fldigi has a bug. (4.1.03) I reverted back to an older version and didn’t have the problem. So I checked for the latest version, installed (4.1.04) and it didn’t have the problem either. Strange, the different versions take different amounts of time to transmit the same file? Roughly 15 seconds different, with a TX time of 2.25 minutes.”

ANNOUNCEMENTS 25/June/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex125.txt’, an FLDIGI/
FLAMP/PC-EDITOR exercise. If you complete the optional exercise within,
send that file to NCS in the Traffic round using FLAMP.

Our Field Day went well, although it didn’t unfold as planned. We usually
do FD from our radio trailer at the top of our property where we have tall
trees and ocean-view. This year, we didn’t get the weeds cut soon enough;
we had tough allergy issues. CW is less fun with a headache and runny nose.
So, we used our home station, 1E OR. I was mainly the support Operator this
year, but I did work a young YL, enthusiastically shouting her callsign on
20m. We could hear a male voice in the background, probably her Dad,
helping catch callsigns.

Doug K7KY worked CW, Digital, and Phone. He worked two Ops he knows. One was
our colleague, Greg KG7DMI. This is the first FD he worked anyone he knows.
There was an amazing amount of signals on the waterfall. We had no luck with
80/160m.

FLAMP Tip:
How to select the optimum Block size before sending a file? A good
strategy is watching the window that displays the time the message
will take to send. You don’t want to use extremes like 2 Blocks or
20 Blocks for a typical ORCA practice message. Two Blocks will have
you resending half the message when one Block fails. Twenty Blocks
will significantly increase transmit time because each Block has a
header with processing data. The best tactic is to change the Block
count up and down, watching the ‘send’ time window. Sending time
will help you choose the optimum number of Blocks.
