Tonight, our prediction for band condx wasn’t too far off. All seven Advanced NBEMS Exercise participants CONFIRMED the file. Lamar AE6LJ in Briceland,CA was the only station to CONFIRM the first pass in OFDM-500F. According to the Developer, OFDM-500F has a word-speed around 4x MFSK-32(120wpm), but isn’t nearly as robust. Lamar is close enough to NCS to have trouble when NVIS is weak, so we were surprised he CONFIRMED OFDM-500F in one pass. He may have an exceptional antenna.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Doug VE7WAX in Victoria, BC. We’ve not logged a Canadian station for 6-7yrs. Doug stuck around for the Monitor’s Session where he sent a test message in FLAMP. It’s good to have him aboard.

Five stations participated in the after-net Monitor’s Session. This brief session enables us to release the main net and accommodate QNX and Lurking stations that work the Exercises silently. It’s the best way to learn the Basic and Advanced NBEMS Exercises w/o time and on-air pressure. When you’re comfortable, ck-in Active and work the Exercise live.

Thanks to each of you for supporting the net. Together, we’re presenting a weekly working model of efficient Amateur digital networking. It’s your knowledge and use of net Protocols that enables us to operate efficiently.

We had a few more doubles than usual tonight, probably mostly due to band condx. It’s hard to avoid doubling signals we don’t hear. You can get our attention during net operations with your CALLSIGN only between transmissions or your VidID @ 2000wf. If you miss ck-in, we call for Late Ck-Ins twice during the net. Please monitor until we call; the net is busy and brisk, but don’t hesitate to interrupt for emergencies.

Ck-in is a single-purpose event; we don’t have time to chat. We appreciate you sending only what Ck-In Protocol specifies. The Comment Round is Chat-time. Incoming stations are learning net protocols by reading and observation. For the best learning experience, their observations should match what they’ve read.

Next Tuesday, we’ll run a Basic NBEMS Exercise and experiment with the Path Evaluation Macro.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The 4th & 5th Tuesdays are Advanced NBEMS Exercise sessions. Tonight we’ll run an Advanced NBEMS Exercise combining the Basic and Advanced Exercises and a Traffic Round. The Advanced NBEMS Exercise includes practice in traffic-handling tasks based in the computer operating system. The Advanced NBEMS Exercise is more complex; it’s best learned by working silently a few sessions before working live. Monitoring (QNX) stations can Fill or CONFIRM their Exercise files in the Monitor’s Session directly after net.

The Advanced exercise requires you to Report the Primary file ‘CONFIRMED’ BEFORE working the Advanced Exercise. Advanced Exercises usually involve the PC File Manager and Text Editor. Send your Advanced Exercise file to NCS in the Traffic Round. If you’ve not completed the Advanced Exercise by Traffic Round, send QRU when called to Report. You can CONFIRM your work after-net in the Monitor’s Session. The Traffic Round adds realism to the Advanced Exercise. As a Training net, we don’t seek actual Traffic.

Last session, we forgot our plan to experiment with the Path Evaluation Macro. Tonight we have the Advanced NBEMS Exercise and Traffic Round; we’ll work with the Path Macro next Tuesday. We’re doing our best to limit net length. Winter used to be more laid-back than Summer, but not these days. Everyone seems busier than usual.

If you’re relatively new to digital networking, check-out Western Digital Net this coming Thursday 27/Jan/22, 3.581Mhz, 1930p/0330z. WDN was developed 2yrs ago by our ORCA colleague, Steve K6ETA. Steve is the principle NCS; guest NCS are encouraged. Every first Thursday is WDN’s Newcomer’s Net. It’s intended to answer questions and demonstrate digital routines and tactics. WDN is the only full service digital Traffic in western US; it’s members are experienced and friendly.

Learn and practice digital traffic-handling at ORCA DIGITAL NET. Then, become a working member of Western Digital Net; you’ll be on the ground floor of Amateur digital networking in America.

Tnx to Ops for emailing the 1st test image… band looks better than I expected.

Yet another nice summer day here. Vegetation fire broke in the area over the week end. Took them a while to put it down due to low staffing this time of year. This never-ending fire season stuff is stressful.

Signed up early in the roster tonight in hopes the band wouldn’t drop me before the finishes. Plus, a little extra pressure is exciting.

ORCA < K7KY

Although we practiced b4 net tonight as usual, I made a couple errors in the Advanced NBEMS Exercise. Stuff happens. If you made an error tonight, don’t fret. We all make mistakes while learning. Sometimes even after learning (-: The Exercise went very well. Hats-Off to the seven participants for your focus and attention.

Reminder: Newer Ops are learning by observing net operations. It’s important to set a correct example, especially for a Training Net. We send Ck-In Protocol numerous times every session. Read it carefully and send only what’s specified. If you’ve checked in once, we know your CAlLSIGN, NAME, & QTH. No need to use time and bandwidth sending it again.

During nets, your TxID should be OFF unless you’re sending in another mode. Pre-Signal Tone should also be OFF. We Pre-Tone with the TUNE Button. There’s no need to Pre-Tone when NCS calls you. The net knows you’re about to transmit.

If you wonder why NCS signals change durning nets, we switch antennas to run the exercise on the strongest antenna. Except for NBEMS Exercises, NCS always has the stronger antenna.

Why does the Advanced Exercise change require changing QST to W7ZAP? Because, the Exercise file is sent to a single receiver. QST is a bulletin or announcement to all stations. We don’t want numerous stations to request Fills. The message is to NCS only.

BTN 73 Doug K7KY

Good comments Doug… and I 2nd that… I always learn something from each net we run… errors are great learning opportunities. Lot’s of good info in ur comments… tnx!
