Band condx are improving incrementally lately. Let’s hope it continues. Strong QRM at 1750wf forced us to move down to 1300 for awhile. Unfortunately, it arrived while we were working Rick K0KEX in MO, hammering our connection. We were unable to fill his file. Soon after moving the net to 1300wf, the signal moved up to 2500 and we returned to 1500. These thing happen, but thankfully, not very often.

The net ran like clockwork tonight; one would think we’ve been training together (-: It’s a real pleasure to work the net with each of you. Thanks so much for your participation and ongoing support. We’re like a pick-up basketball game, show up and you’re on the team. While we polish our digital skills, we’re helping newer digital Ops to also learn the tactics and routines of digital networking and traffic-handling by observation and osmosis. Together, we’re helping establish solid digital networking conventions for the Amateur community.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Alex KJ7KIN in Eagle,ID and Matt WA7WWW in Spokane Valley,WA. Alex ck’ed in following a suggestion by Steve K6ETA. Mindy W7ZAP and I were trying to decide if tonight was Matt’s first ORCA ck-in. I thought it was his 2nd ck-in because he’s in my FLDIGI Logger. But now, I think Mindy is correct. She logs all stations on paper; she’s done this for nearly 8yrs now. Matt was not in her binder, so I think I added Matt to my log at WDN last week. I also failed to note the date/net. Anyway, I believe Matt ck’ed in to WDN first and then ORCA tonight, also a first ck-in. Anyway, it was fun for us to sort it our at NCS central and we’re glad to have Matt aboard. I had a brief conversation with him after the net. Matt can type accurately as fast as MFKS-32 prints.

Condx were just sufficient for Tim WB8HRO to ck-in w/VidID from Okemos,MI. Tim is the most distant ck-in tonight. Tim is an interesting guy; check out his station and operation at QRZ.com.

Thanks for your support for an ORCA Nationwide Digital Exercise like the recent SATERN Exercise. I felt more upbeat about this project after the net. It’s been a little depressing to be responsible for a rift in our relationship with SATERN Int’l Digital Net. When leadership stumbles, it can effect everyone on both teams. I’m hopeful we’ll reestablish a comfortable working relationship.

We’ve worked for years w/o a sanctioning agency. It’s enabled us to work with various groups that would have rejected us if we were associated with another agency. Our focus is to work with competent Amateur Operators, whatever their affiliation, when we can contribute to their endeavor. ORCA DIGITAL NET comprises members with numerous agency affiliations; we work together for common cause w/o the hindrance of exclusive agency requirements.

Eastern support for an ORCA/WDN Nationwide Digital Exercise is already available. Gary K7EK, a long-time radio friend, now lives in Kentucky and is interested in our Nationwide Exercise and willing to participate. He has deep digital roots and long experience in Amateur networking. He’ll certainly be an asset. ORCA has a number of Ops that are also SATERN members. I expect they will continue working Nationwide Digital Exercises no matter the sponsor. It’s in everyone’s best interest.

Thanks for working with us again tonight. We deeply appreciate your support and participation. Remember our digital-net partner, Western Digital Net. Steve K6ETA/NCS calls WDN every Thursday evening, 3.581+1500, 0230z/1930p, MFSK-32. It’s the new (this year) digital Traffic net West-of-the-Rockies. You can probably work WDN from East of the Rockies too.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex184.txt’, an FLDIGI/PC-EDITOR/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the
Traffic round with FLAMP.

We’ve run into difficulty developing an Exercise similar to SATERN’s Nationwide Digital
Exercise. We anticipated SATERN Ops working with us as we did with them, but it’s not to
be. SATERN Leadership has declined our invitation. This is an unfortunate turn of events.
The SATERN Exercise was a first for engaging digital-net Ops East and West in a nationwide
event. It seemed to work well and had enthusiastic support on both coasts. W/out SATERN’s
participation, we’ll delay our Exercise while we locate Eastern support stations.

I made a couple errors following SATERN Exercise instructions; I think this impelled them
to cease communications. I regret the errors; I’ve owned them and apologized numerous times.
It’s all I can do at this point. I can’t change the past, but I’m certainly committed to
parsing more carefully today. It’s most unfortunate timing; this was our first opportunity
to work jointly with SATERN Digital Net. Unfortunately, my error leads to a training loss
for all SATERN/ORCA/WDN Ops.

Meantime, we’re looking for an East Coast station sufficiently knowledgeable in NBEMS and
digital traffic-handling to act as our Target Station. I think we have enough ORCA Ops mid-
USA to handle Relays.

Email the Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com for the Net Report. Thank you!

Comment:
As amateur radio operators, we know that we are able to “talk” to people all over the world in an instant, yet a digital link just across our country seems to be a

rather bold and challenging undertaking that will take a little longer. Stick with it.
Stay safe. 73 W7WSV

RR Steve tnx for another great signal report Mindy & I use these reports to learn the paths btwn stations and develop an overall understanding of the member stations

potential we won’t be forgetting the SATERN Exercise it was a great idea and well acepted by the members of all three net… I think we’ll end up working

with most of the same Ops and I really hope to sort out any differences and misunderstanding… it’s important for the major digital nets to be working together

we’ll learn from them and they from us… working together we will be able to better influence Operators toward good digital-net protocols and conventions… i look

forward to harmony and fun in digital networking BK are there any more comments from anyone anywhere? come now < K7KY

NCS sorry I was late. But got the ex184.txt .Your sig was 2- 9 dB. Today was getting another Vancouver station working MFSK32.

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
