ORCA DIGITAL NET welcomes Diana KJ7GVY in Carson City,NV and Bruno KG7VVM in Beryl,UT. ORCA membership is growing; it exciting and a bit challenging too.  Tonight’s net was 1.5hr long.  That’s our outer limit.  We may need an adjustment or two to accommodate more active ck-ins.  Currently, we hope to hold stations working the FLAMP exercise to 10, as we had tonight.  When we have more than 10, we’ll ask a couple of our long-term members to pass the FLAMP exercise, but remain active for Traffic and Comments.  Ten active Ops in the FLAMP exercise is doable in current band condx.  When condx improve, we can likely accommodate more. If you have other ideas about adjusting our format for more participants , we’d like to hear from you.

All things considered, the band was not bad, but it was a little strange.  Sila AK0SK tried to ck-in numerous times with VidID and I answered him each time, but he was not copying me. I asked Gene W1EEP to relay to Sila, but Sila didn’t copy; Mindy W7ZAP and Ken KR7KR also tried. We copied his VidID clearly, and once copied his text at 1500.  Sometimes the band works well in one direction, but not the other. Differences in antenna orientation and efficiency, power, and signal quality are also important factors.  It’s not always easy to determine exactly, ‘What’s up?’.

One take-away this evening is the efficiency of VidID.  Like the Tune signal, it prints at a greater distance than FLDIGI can decode text. It’s particularly useful for ck-in and during net operations when stations are off the net frequency and wish to return. NCS can see VidIDs while working a station at 1500. VidID gets NCS attention w/o interrupting net flow. Thanks again to Dave W1HKJ for adding VidID to FLDIGI.

Generally, 80m condx tend to improve as the terminator moves west, but it’s not always so.  Lately, I’ve notice that our path to John KS6M in Oakland,CA and Jaye KE6SLS in Eureka,CA is initially solid, but diminishes as the net progresses. Check the images John sent tonight; his path deteriorated during the net. For Gene W1EEP in Pine Valley,UT, condx improved slightly during the net. Early condx really rocked for Tom WB7TZD in Vancouver,WA, directly north of NCS. He was the only station of ten in the FLAMP exercise to confirm PSK63-RC4 traffic on the first pass.

Test images indicate band conditions vary with location; for some, path improves, but for others it deteriorates:

RX #2: W1EEP UT
RX #1: KS6M CA RX #2: KS6M CA
RX #1: W7WSV AZ
RX #2: W7WSV AZ
RX #1: W7WXV OR
RX #2: KI7TPD UT

As ORCA gets busier, we notice it first during check-in.  Check-in is much smoother than it was a couple years ago, but it’s still one of our busiest activities during most nets.  That’s why we simplified the check-in routine.  If we already know you, all we need at ck-in is your CALLSIGN.  We don’t list traffic at ck-in because we’re not a Traffic net.  We generate practice messages for the Traffic round in the FLAMP exercise;  you’re also welcome to bring your own brief practice traffic.  There are two ck-in variations: CALLSIGN IN&OUT when you’re monitoring only, and CALL/NAME/QTH for your first ck-in.  This from the weekly Preamble:

“REMAINING CK-INS COME NOW. Participating Ops send ‘CALLSIGN’ or VidID
MONITORING Ops Send,’CALLSIGN in&out’

First time? CALL/NAME/QTH < NCS”

The net is interested in things like your power setting, QTH, antenna, station and software configuration, etc. The Comment round is the logical place for this information. We appreciate your help in managing the net.

Thanks for working with us again tonight.  It’s your regular participation that completes the learning and practice environment. We really enjoy working with you and hope to see you again next Tuesday evening. 73 Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS 24/Sept/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex138.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLAMP/FLMSG
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic round with FLAMP.

You may be familiar with ‘Shortwave Radiogram’ produced by Dr Kim Elliot KD9XB.
Shortwave Radiogram broadcasts 30min digital programs in FLDIGI from powerful
Commercial radio stations. Currenty, there are five broadcasts weekly. Mindy and
I used to copy the weekend broadcasts when Kim worked and broadcast at Voice of
America. Articles are usually interesting and images are included. Get a bit more
digital tuning practice and check current band condx too. There’s a link to Shortwave
Radiogram in the right column of our website.

While perusing the Shortwave Radiogram website, read the article, ‘New York and
Pennsylvania NBEMS nets’. I think the Pennsylvania NBEMS group seems well organized
and active. Some ORCA Ops may be able to work the Pennsylvania net. If you do, let
us know. Establishing links with other digital nets would be useful.

PSK63FEC and the PSKxxxR modes are forward error correcting modes. PSK63FEC is compatible
with the Multi←-Psk mode of the same name. The PSKxxxR, or robust, modes use both forward
error correction and interleaving to achieve about 4 dB s/n improvement over standard PSK.
FLDIGI Manual 4.1.0, Modems, p248
