Tonight’s band condx were the best in a long time.  Seven of eight stations CONFIRMED the FLAMP Exercise in one transmission. Let’s hope it continues. Another big Roster too; 31 stations made the Log. Ck-in choked when three stations checked-in one right after the other. When this happens, your text scrolls off screen before we can copy it. If another station transmits, the screen continues to scroll, preventing Highlight/Copy. We occasionally have to send ‘Pse StandBy’.  Sometimes this works and everyone pauses while we catch up. Sometimes, ‘Pse StandBy’ has no effect and stations continue calling, like tonight.

When we send ‘Pse StandBy’, we’re asking you to wait while we catch up. We can’t scroll up to Copy while FLDIGI is Receiving. When we catch up, we’ll send, ‘Taking Early Ck-In…’. ORCA Ck-ins are usually efficient and orderly. Thanks for your patience and assistance in managing the net.

We’re nearing 200 FLAMP Exercises, spanning nearly four years. When we added the Optional Exercise, current net members were fully familiar with the basic Exercise and had no difficulty seeing the Optional as a secondary challenge. Today, incoming Ops often see the Exercise as a unit and attempt to complete both tasks from the outset. This can result in them missing NCS’s call for Reports.  They sometimes miss Reporting the primary exercise, but later are ready to CONFIRM the Optional Exercise. When they are busy working the Optional Exercise and unaware of net-flow, the Report round pauses, waiting for them to Report. Changing the initial participation path for incoming Ops may address this issue.

Incoming Ops will ck-in QNX for enough sessions to become familiar with ORCA Protocols and conventions. This is already SOP. We’d like them to work the primary FLAMP Exercise silently as Monitors until they can do it reliably. Then ck-in to participate and work the Optional FLAMP Exercise. This may help new Ops master the FLAMP Exercise more quickly and reduce avoidable delays.

Why we don’t send the FLAMP Exercise file multiple times. This question arises periodically.  Most digital nets routinely send files multiple times, saving time and reducing Fills.  SATERN Int’l Digital Net and ID ERC Digital Net are examples of this training strategy. Our training strategy is different; opposite actually. We’re not trying to save time or avoid Fills. Actually, we want you to miss a Block or two. We’re learning and practicing all the NBEMS features. The more we use them, the better you’ll know them. Needing fills during the FLAMP Exercise also creates the opportunity for members to Relay fill blocks. The Exercise is designed to employ as many NBEMS tools as possible. You won’t need every tool and tactic each time you handle traffic, but by practicing them regularly, you’ll employ them effortlessly when you do.

Why we’re flogging ORCA Ck-In Protocol these days.  ORCA is a Training net. A primary learning goal is correctly interpreting and implementing written instructions. We’re learning to parse carefully. Much of traffic handling involves following written instructions. We’ve simplified ORCA Ck-In to make compiling the Roster intuitive and efficient at our end.  Ck-In is simpler than many nets at Ck-In. New ORCA Ops are learning by observing and emulating. We want to set a good example.

We were uncertain about Harold K7HPN’s ORCA status. We couldn’t decide if tonight is his first ck-in. Now, we know we muffed it and it is Harold’s first ORCA net. A belated ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcome to Harold K7HPN. We’ll ask Harold to follow the participation path outlined above for his first few ORCA sessions. We’re always happy to Welcome new stations.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex197.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic round with FLAMP.

We’re making a small change to the FLAMP Exercise that should help complete it more
efficiently. Sometimes, new ORCA Ops misperceive it’s structure and purpose. It’s
organized to simulate a busy Traffic or Emergency net. It gives practice in completing
a written task correctly while maintaining focus on net flow. Some new stations
complete the primary file and begin immediately on the Optional Exercise, skipping
NCS’s call to REPORT. Meanwhile, the net waits for a station that’s focused elsewhere.

Now, new ORCA Ops will ck-in QNX for a few sessions and work the Exercise silently.
We’ll CONFIRM or FILL their Exercise files immediately after closing the net. This
will provide the practice they need to work the Exercise successfully. When they’ve
mastered the primary Exercise, NCS will check them in to participate.

When Steve KW6M included ‘QSA1’ in his Ck-In string last week, we thought it might be
useful to add ‘QSA’ as a Ck-In option. We actually did change the Preamble and website.
Later, thinking it through thoroughly, we realized we were adding an unnecessary option
to our Ck-In protocol w/o benefit. Signal reports are a big part of the Comment Round.
We’ll continue with net protocols as they are.

Participating stations send: ‘CALLSIGN’ only.
Monitoring stations send: ‘CALLSIGN QNX’.
First time Ck-ins send: ‘CALLSIGN NAME QTH’ (after 1st ck-in, NAME/QTH is redundant)

Thanks for emailing the original Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

I had set up my new telescoping SteppIR telescoping vertical, two 4 point guy points. However this morning a check found the wind broke the antenna mast. Disheartening as it took me a good four hours to set up and tune, Hoping to use for the net tonight. Another beautiful sunny day here. Full charge in the station batteries.

Covid-19 stats are shooting up here in Humboldt. Two LEOs have tested positive. Great time to CALL your family and stay home!

The bad apple ham <UPE> went off again on southern repeaters. This time threatening to cut my throat along with a 75 year old ham I’ll be submitting the recordings to FCC/ARRL later tonight, already filed local LEO report. . .

Will be picking up a “curb side” turkey dinner with all the fixin’ for thanks giving. Looking forward to stuffing myself and enjoying some ham radio too!

High bands have really been booming last few days. I hope you all are taking advantage of the improved bands due to some long over-due sun spots!

So far, band has been MUCH improved over last weeks ORCA digital net!

Still noticing many ops using TX ID after net begins. Remember, turn OFF TX id UNLESS you are going to change modes “during net.”

Have local QRM, a buzzing noise. Using the attenuator and keeping my RF gain down, was still able to have very good copy on net.

Have fun Brad, copy was pretty rough here tonight! Turn your volume up, I can’t hear you!!

Net was kind of dis-jointed, but hey, we made it through

We know that covid-19 is going to explode, so please be safe!

Happy thanks giving to you all!

Whew! Nice job on ck-in Doug! Hard to copy & paste roster with so many ck-ins and keep everything straight. During ck-in, if you see NCS say “Stand By”… pls wait to ck-in. Sometimes we get hammered with 2-3 stns at once and need to scroll up to get each one (copy & paste). Hard to copy text in the RX buffer when another stn TXing.

Propagation is much better than I anticipated for the FLAMP exercise. MFSK-64 was CONFIRMED by 7 stns, not bad. FYI: On the last pass of the exercise, WB7TZD needed block 3. I sent block 3 (2x) by putting 3,3 in the block window. Note: If someone needs the PREAMBLE, its block 0.

Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving! Thanks for working with us and hope to see you all on the WF again soon.

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
