We enjoyed good band condx tonight; good for digital nets, anyway. We had deep fading at times, but it wasn’t a problem. John KS6M’s signal faded to nearly invisible on the WF at one point, but copy continued perfectly. More bothersome than the band is the mosquitoes that seem to gather at 2000-2500wf every session and desense our radios with strong digital signals. Not everyone understands the efficiency of digital modes at minimal power. We’re working into central US with 35w, yet hindered by 75-100w near-by stations. That’s Amateur Radio.

31 Ck-Ins is a large net and we had an overflow of Active Ops for the FLAMP Exercise. Ten stations is our limit to to keep the sessions to reasonable length. Adding an * at ck-in enables ten long-term ORCA Ops to opt out of the FLAMP Exercise/Traffic Round when the Active Roster is large, helping us manage the Exercise.

It’s good to remind ourselves that ORCA is a learning and practice net. There will naturally be mistakes while we learn; mistakes occur randomly too. 1-1.5hr is a long time to stay focused. For most of us, it takes practice. NCS probably makes the most mistakes; we’re learning too. Be as patient with your colleagues as you are with us. Some are just learning conventions and tactics you relegated to unconscious control years ago.

Please don’t take this Pandemic lightly. Scan widely for relevant information. Err on the side of caution. If you become infected, you may endanger family and friends, just when they need your strength and focus. If events unfold here as they are in Italy and New York City right now, it will become difficult to access health care; maybe impossible, especially for the elderly and compromised. Be thoughtful, cautious, and strategic. Stay home as much as possible. Research Vit-C for prevention and cure. It’s getting very good reports from COVID-19 treating Doctors.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 24/Mar/2020

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex162.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

FLAMP EXERICSE NOTE: The FLAMP Exercise entails practice using multiple tools and
managing multiple tasks while retaining focus on net flow. We just realized why some
experienced ORCA Ops frequently fail to reply when called to REPORT. They’ve copied
the primary file 100%, often on the first pass, and immediately begun the OPTIONAL
task. Preoccupied, they miss NCS calling for their REPORT.

Copy, REPORT, and CONFIRM are all elements of the primary Exercise. Some are jumping
to the 2nd task, w/o completing the 1st. Meanwhile, ORCA pauses, waiting for their reply.
They’ve not yet developed sufficient focus to work both at once. All stations should own
the first task before working the OPTIONAL task. REPORTing when called is part of the
exericse. Answering NCS promptly is a measure of your handle on the primary Exerecise.

The COVID-19 Pandemic grows more confusing by the day. It’s hard to know who’s opinions
and advice to consider. Our national leadership seems confused. Politicians, Economists, and
Doctors all have different opinions. Our solution is to gather information as widely as possible.
If you want to know how things are going in other countries, you have a better chance of
learning something useful by tracking their news; not ours. As with all news, you should sift,
sort, and conclude on your own. Monitoring how this virus develops elsewhere gives some
indication of what will occur here. Right now, we aren’t looking especially exceptional.
Better to be cautious, than caviler.

During the Traffic and Comment rounds, feel free to deviate from our usual focus on radio
topics and comment or opine on COVID-19.

Thanks for sending both Test images every week. They’re a useful addition to the net Report.

NCS s/n 3 to 10 tonight! Looking good tonight!

I use the “TUNE” button for my pre-tune!

Covid-19 restrictions at the university keep getting tighter. We postponed graduation last week and are now looking at having to continue on-line instruction into the

Summer semester or even canceling lab classes. We are also looking at budget cuts due to the virus and potentially fewer students in the Fall…

Classes are still going online only. I have had to learn the how to Video Lecture on the fly! Seems to be OK so far, but I do miss the students…

Our Governor (Utah) predicts that Covid-19 restrictions will continue for at least 8 more weeks (possibly 12)… This all depends on the number of new cases… So

far they keep going up!

Stay Safe and Healthy everyone!!!

can compose my files and still see NCS calling me.

Wife still sick. Went to Dr again yesterday. Dr. said she needed a chest xray , but said to do that would have to send to hospital but didn’t want to make her do that
as was afraid she would pick up “something bad” at the hospital, so is treating her with albuterol, robitussin, and azithromycin, hoping her chronic cough will

subside.

Son is apparently fully recovered and is back working; is a trucker so is the only one in the household now permitted to leave the property for other than food or

emergencies due to total lockdown in WA effective midnight tonight.

I had a 13 week contract lined up with Santiam Health in Albany OR but they cancelled it on me today due to my exposure to whatever my wife and son have/had.
I was transparent with them. However, I still feel just fine.

Best wishes to all in ORCA.

Yes, this station uses the PRE-TONE using the Tune button on FLdigi.

We lost a child under 18 years of age here in California today. We have 5 new cases in the county. I’ve driven around town a few times and look at folks using NO

PROTECTION at all, so I fear we have much worse to come yet :(

Have had lots of rain last night/today. Still managed enough sun to charge the radio shack batteries.

I sent an email to our local ham email list looking for face masks. As ORCA was beginning, a wonderful ham had made a special trip and dropped off 5 face masks for

me! Wow. We are an amazing group of people!

Costco has special hours for handicap/elders, so Thursday, I will gather food at 8am.

Today, I experimented with SSTV (Qsstv) and finally got it working. Send tons of test images. The one thing I had failed to do however, was to make a FOLDER to keep

them in! So I had a TON of images in my home directory to clean out afterwards! :)

To the ORCA digital net, TU for the great net! Please stay safe all!

Greetings to the net.

ALERT ALERT TO WEST COAST NET PARTICIPANTS: NWS Tsunami Info Stmt: M7.8 East Of Kuril Islands.
1949PDT Mar 24:
Event is being reviewed to determine threat to CA,OR,WA,BC,and AK. https://twitter.com/NWS_NTWC

At 8:02 pm PDT, that’s the most recent info from that source. No kidding. A 7.8 is big.

I had reasonably good reception this evening from NCS. That’s surprising, given the space weather data and my reception of the first ORCA evaluation image. The whale

looks more like a tadpole this evening. Also, strong signals at 500 and 2500.

KG7VVN traffic received 100%. Others, no copy.

Just as NCS asked for my traffic, my antivirus program blacked everything out and said “Avast needs to restart your computer!” I had two choices, and, after some

thought, decided I’d prefer to delay. It gave me some choices and I picked Next Week. I should have chosen next year, but whatever.

Thanks in advance to K6ETA; I expect to use that Winlink gateway tomorrow morning for Bay Area Hospitals Net traffic.

Please practice social distancing. We can get through this. < John KS6M

NCS < K6ETA Update on possible tsunami event. The Pacific Tsunami Warning center has not issued any warnings yet HOWEVER, the Nationa Bouy Data Center shows three

bouys in ‘event mode’ near the Kiril Islands 7.8 earthquake event. Wave forms measure less than a meter swell in deap seas BUT that could actually be a significant

swell, and we will mnonitor the situation closely.
