* Active Stations called for COMMENTS only

While logging 35 stations is nothing like logging 41, we still struggled a bit with ck-in tonight. The FLAMP Exercise also had a few glitches. Stuff happens; it makes for good practice for NCS and net Ops. We seldom have pre-knowledge of the condx we’ll encounter in emergencies. Net errors are also teaching moments. That said, we endeavor to run the net smoothly and efficiently. We follow our protocols and conventions closely to make net operations easier to learn and easier to engage. Training nets endeavor to train and practice correctly. No one would be interested in practicing poor operating procedures. We’re committing precious time and energy to learning and practicing digital traffic-handling skills; naturally, we want to practice correctly.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes three new stations tonight, John KL7RI in Reno,NV, Gary KJ7HMV also in Reno, and Clancy K7CAM in Winston,OR. We’ll ask them to Monitor enough sessions to understand net operations and participate in the primary portion of the weekly FLAMP Exercise. Again, newer Ops should ONLY work the primary FLAMP Exercise until they’re capable of working the Exercise while tracking their place in the Roster. CONFIRMING the primary file is the ONLY Exercise for newer Ops. You’ll know when you’re ready for the OPTIONAL/ADVANCED Exercise.

The FLAMP Exercise trains you to work traffic-handling tasks in the NBEMS suite while retaining focus on your position in the net, prepared to REPORT when NCS calls. There are always three Rounds of Sending/REPORTING in different modes. The primary Exercise is completed by CONFIRMING 100% copy with your REPORT to NCS. Only after you’ve become handy at CONFIRMING the primary file to NCS should you attempt the OPTIONAL/ADVANCED Exercise. Like many ORCA Exercises, FOCUS is primary; you always need to track your position in the net, prepared to respond to NCS when called. It’s basic networking, actually.

Another FLAMP Exercise Observation:
Newer Ops sometimes withdraw from the net when they encounter problems. Of course, station issues can prevent decoding, but trouble with the Exercise isn’t terminal. Lots of things can go astray, especially when we’re learning; you may be copying poorly because of QRN/QRM or mis-configured equipment. The Exercise is also about working digital nets. When you aren’t copying well and NCS calls for your REPORT, send ‘no copy’ as instructed before each Exercise. You’re still participating correctly and condx may change or you may discover the problem and be printing 100% by the next REPORT call. If not, send ‘no copy’. Mid-FLAMP Exercise we’re unable to relog you QNX. Complete the Exercise as best you can by replying to NCS when called with your status: CONFIRMED, Missing x,x,x, or No Copy. Then send QRU for Traffic Round, and participate in the Comment round as you initially intended. This Exercise is challenging. We’re not natural multi-taskers. With practice, it gets easier quickly. Hang in there…

As to our experiments with the new mode, OFDM, the FLDIGI Alpha website still has only v4.1.18.21. All previous FLDIGI Alphas are gone. Brad WA7HHE and Ken KR7KR report that v4.1.18.21 crashes at startup. That’s all I know at the moment. Dave W1HKJ is usually right on top of Alpha testing and I expect he’ll sort it out quickly. I hope the wild squelch issue is fixable; having RX text embedded in solid noise is unhandy.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex212.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP Exercise.
If you complete the OPTIONAL/ADVANCED Exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic
Round with FLAMP.

Experimenting with OFDM modes continues. Thanks to those helping explore the new mode. You
need FLDIGI Alpha V4.1.18.19 to test OFDM. If OFDM passes muster with Dave W1HKJ, it will
be included in stable version 4.1.19. When/if this happens, we’ll be using OFDM in the weekly
FLAMP Exercise.

Review: ORCA DIGITAL NET Protocols presented weekly in the Preamble

CONFIG’ FLDIGI 4 ORCA DIGITAL NET:

LOCK: Cursor @ 1500
ENABLE: RxID
DISABLE: TxID, end-of-Tx-ID, Pre-Signal-Tone*
DISABLE: Mode-ID, CWID, CW-Postamble-ID
* Pre-Tone manually (TUNE BUTTON) when doubles are likely.

These FIDIGI settings optimize your station for ORCA DIGITAL NET.
LOCK: ENABLE, LOCKS TX on net frequency
TxID: DISABLE, unless you’re changing mode in Traffic Round
End-of-TX-ID: DISABLE
Pre-Signal-Tone: DISABLE, Pre-Tone manually (TUNE Button) when needed
Mode-ID: DISABLE
CW-ID: DISABLE
CW-Postamble-ID: DISABLE

These settings save time and bandwidth. NCS has TxID Enabled. Net stations do not use TxID during
nets unless they’re changing mode in the Traffic Round. NCS returns the net to MFSK-32. Some Ops
are still using Pre-Signal-Tone during nets; please Disable Pre-Signal-Tone, it’s redundant and
consumes net time w/o need. When NCS calls you, only you will respond. Everyone expects you
to transmit. Pre-Signal-Tone is redundant. Pre-Toning appropriately identifies an experienced
digital Operator.

You’re welcome to change modes for your practice Traffic in the Traffic Round. If you forget to
ENABLE TxID, you’ll be the only one in your chosen mode. The Traffic Round is not the time for
wild experiments with exotic modes. Pick a mode you feel the band will support. After sending
your traffic, DISABLE TxID. NCS will return the net to MFSK-32.

Following net Protocols is important on any net, but especially digital nets. It’s even more
important on a digital Training net. We want to practice correctly. Practicing sloppy is
counterproductive. We want to inprint protocols and precedures correctly. Monitoring
stations and new participants are learning by observing and emulating our performance.
We want to set the best example we can. We’re doing a good job, thanks to you.

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com
(more file location/manipulation practice) Your test images reflect your path to NCS.

RR Tom ur sending the Traffic file I’m looking 4 ur Report on the primary Exercise file… When you didn’t answer my call 4 Report after the 2nd round, I guessed you’d moved along and were working the Optional/Advanced exercise… please wor the primary exercise until you can work the advanced ex and keep track of your place in the roster….
BK all stations this exercise is brisk and complex u should onlly work the primary exercise until you’ve done it enought to keep your place in rotation while working the Advanced ex tu
BK when you have trouble in the exercise and it’s not unusual… the ex is busy and demanding, I can’t stop and revise the roster while running the ex…. I’m working in three applications and using three modes while cutting and pasting it’s very intense at this end.. if you hv trouble or miss copying send ‘no copy’ as instructed b4 every exercise… thanks for participating it’s a good exercise to prepare for busy and intense Emergency nets BTN < K7KY

Thanks Doug… MFSK64 really did a great job tonight
BK
Again the main focus of the FLAMP exercise is the REPORT…. we want to know if you CONFIRMED the file. The advanced portion gives you traffic for the TRAFFIC round.

If you don’t have traffic, just send QRU :-)

:mg:2100 Following msg forwarded by AA0LB on SATERN Dig Net 3.20.21:
Greetings,
We are writing to share that the platform which currently hosts the American Red Cross Safe and Well website, redcross.org/safeandwell, has become obsolete due to technology changes and will unfortunately be deactivated at midnight on December 29, 2020. While the Red Cross won’t have a self-service website for people to register or search for loved ones after disasters, we want to reassure you that we remain committed to this work. Our less public, behind the scenes efforts to reunite loved ones are not going away.

Those who utilize Safe and Well should be sure to remove Safe and Well information from their continuity of operations plan and individual emergency plans. Users can contact their local Red Cross to talk about ways the Red Cross reunification team may be able to support them moving forward.

If you have included the Safe and Well website in your continuity of operations plan, we encourage you to do the following:
• Connect with your local emergency management to determine what alert systems are in place in your community.
• Utilize our free Red Cross Emergency app and encourage employees to incorporate the app in their communication plan as part of their personal preparedness. The app features an “I’m Safe” button that allows users to post a message to their social accounts or send an email to a pre-determined list, letting people know they are safe and out of harm’s way.
• Reach out to reunification@redcross.org to learn more about the aspects of the Red Cross reunification program that will remain available to you and your constituents.

The Red Cross will continue to support requests for reunification that come in through our national call center, chapter network or through emergency welfare inquiries, family reunification requests and military welfare inquiries. Our team will also continue to explore options to support similar safe and well services in the future.
If you have any questions about these changes, please reach out to reunificationh tboss.arf ¹[WRAP:chksum B66B][WRAP:end] … end

Tnx for the traffic… I saw this, it surprised me that its being de-activated.

Learned of ORCA talking to other amateur operators and internet search. First ckd in late 2018, I think. Unknown as to why it took 3 months for the Red Cross to get the msg out to amateur community. Sri the msg took so long-I thought it would run a little shorter than this.

ORCA < K7KY
There’s been an increase in COVID19 infections in Curry County,OR. Gov Brown has decreed a return to restricted condx beginning Friday. Resturants back to take-out only. A friend of our family died of heart attack the day after receiving his 2nd shot. He was 80yrs old and in good health. Oregon is administering shots manufactured by Pfizer, J&J, & Moderna. They were approved by the FDA under ‘Emergency Use Authorization’. They are not Vaccines of the traditional definition, but catagorized as ‘gene-therapy’. Rather than injecting a small amount of virus, they contain mDNA that instructs our DNA to creat the virus within our cells. Information can be enpowering.

Thanks for your indulgence with my After-Exercise Rant. The FLAMP Exercise is no cake-walk to conduct. Condx and number of participants can complicate it. We’ve little time/attention for extraneous events. Focus is one of the most important components of the FLAMP Exercise. There’s a lot to do while tracking your position in the net. Traffic and Emergency nets will run similar to this, but probably not this brisk. When you master this exercise, you’ll be relaxed when things are dicy and chaotic.

The strategy for newer Ops is to work the primary exercise until you’re comfortable. You can always work the Opt/Adv portion as QNX and check you work in the Monitors Session directly following every net.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes three first time Ck-Ins, John KL7RI in Reno,NV, Gary KJ7HMV also in Reno, & Clancy K7CAM in Winston,OR. I hope I’ve not discouraged them already. Tonight we’ve really been ‘On the Rivet’. We’re usually more relaxed, and easy going. It’s a Training net, after all. Mistakes and errors are expected and accepted. We make a lot of mistakes here at NCS Central. We’re learning too. Without your participation, we would not be learning the NCS role. We always apperciate your participation. In truth, you are the net (-:

Brad WA7HHE When I checked the Alpha site b4 net, .19 was still current. I’m not up to speed w/.21. I’ll look into it after net. Not good to hear it’s not working corrctly, but then, it’s an Alpha version )-:
