An improvement in band condx allowed Gene W1EEP to participate from Pine Valley,UT.  Gene’s been sidelined by band condx for the last month or so. Pre-net signals had me wondering how well we would do;  signals from UT were up & down.  Thanks to Steve K6ETA for his awareness of how many active check-ins we had. He changed his status from ‘active’ to ‘in&out’,  making room for others and helping keep the net to a reasonable length.

With 12 active stations working the FLAMP exercise, Doug chose to use all MFSK modes. I was surprised that MFSK-128 was CONFIRMED by 4 stations in CA, NV, and UT. MFSK-64 and MFSK-32 filled everyone else with a RELAY by Fred KI7TPD in Cedar City,UT.  Doug did lose one station during the exercise, Dan N7DRD responded to the first round and was not heard again during the net.

Although large and busy, the net flowed smoothly.  I was surprised after the TRAFFIC round to see 10 files in the FLAMP RX que. We’re really getting a lot of traffic-handling experience in a short time.  A big thanks to all of you for your focus, attention, and support.  And, thanks to Dave K7DV for his wonderful comments.  It’s nice to learn a little about his family and activities. We also appreciate his ORCA observations.  Dave is NCS for the NA ID ERC Digital Net every Wed evening.  He take early check-ins around 0100z, 3.581 + 1500. Have RxID active and check him out on Wednesday evenings.

Thanks to the stations below for sending their signal evaluation images. The images help us understand the conditions experienced by all much more easily.  The images indicate just how wide the variation in signal reception can be at different locations.

If there are any exercises you think we should add to the net, please write to us (ncs@orcadigitalnet.com). We’d like to keep ORCA DIGITAL NET moving forward; learning and practicing skills useful for emergency communications.

Thanks for taking the time to work with us. We hope to see you on the WF again next Tuesday night!
73,

ANNOUNCEMENTS 23/July/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex129.txt’, an FLDIGI/
FLAMP/FLMSG exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within,
send that file to NCS in the Traffic round with FLAMP.

We’ll put the off-freq-traffic exercise back on the shelf. Maybe summer
activity and difficult band condx are discouraging potential volunteers.

Here’s an excerpt from last week’s Net Report:
Remember: the ‘OPTIONAL’ exercise within the weekly FLAMP exercise is
OPTIONAL. It’s intended to broaden our digital traffic-handling skills.
PC/OS knowledge and skills are often required for digital traffic-handling.
Some of the OPTIONAL exercises take a bit more time to complete. If you
are near the top of the roster, there’s not much time to complete the
exercise before Traffic round begins. When you’ve not completed the
OPTIONAL exercise, you can send QRU and submit the file next week,
or send, ‘Pse come back to me at the end’. No problem for us.

Thanks for emailing the ORCA test images. Now, with images from net start
and end, we have a better indication of band condx during the net.

Before RSID: <<2019-07-24T03:32Z MFSK-32 @ 1499>>
GE to the net, I had fun testing with and helping a ham who is the new ARES head in a county south of us. He is interested in NBEMS FOR GIGGLES I pushed through FLAMP a seven page MS Word Doc to him in 1 minute and 20 seconds, 278 Blocks using 8PSK1200F. This over a 2 meter repeater. However have found one of our repeaters will not pass this mode.

Is Hyper-speed compared to what we are used to on H.F. If a prolonged power outage with local repeaters becoming unusable. Good to practice on H.F. Wind, Rain or Snow ORCA passes messages. 73’s to all < WA7HHE

Wow… great to know. Never tried that! Thanks Brad

:mg:1192 We have been very busy with several camps and family activities so have been kinda scarce here as of late. I hope to do better as the conditions improve.. 9They cant get much worse hi hi )

the mrs and i have been to several camps with our motorhome which is quite nice . My wife is blind and very capable and helpful but having a camper like a motorhome is the best thing we did… our camper becomes the center of the family get togethers and functions and realy makes it easier for the mrs to know where everything is .

I appreciate the ORCA net and its tenacity to stay going and going eveb when the conditions are not to par. I wish ther was a way to get a metal to doug and Mindy for thier tireless service to the fraternal of ham radiuo and preparing of hams around the entore region for disasters that will inverabily come danr it but will be ready and focused.. thanks for all of you who support this great net.. it will stand as a bulwork and support for 100s and maybe 1000s of lives in the future.. its a great work and its a pleasure to work with such a nice group of hams… Bless you all for your service and untireing service to the emergency circuits. de Dave K7DV

NCS FLamp took ALL my WF tonight! WA7HHE FLmsg auto send problem was probably waiting for him to SAVE file first. Sometimes the prompts come up behind other apps and you don’t see the bugger. I hit a deer last Friday while southbound on 101 near Pepperwood, about 20 miles south of Fortuna. I had no bars on my cell phone, and the only way I got a wrecker was via 2meters, thanks to KM6LIQ, Carl, who relayed. I was not injured The deer was dead. My cooling system is wrecked. Got the REOC Laptop installed in the EOC yesterday. But windows 10 is not setting up the daul display! Need some guru. Last night’s VHF FlDigi net was short and sweet, but fun.

The Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Run (100 mile) went well. No medical evacs, no lost runners, good runner’s time due to the moderate WX we had. All aid station’s ham stations had technical challenges, but nobody on the event staff knew it!!!! Lots of tired and worn-out bodies!

Event though there was a lot of stations in the net tonight, the net seemed to flow smoothly. All traffic received 100% with KN7VX as the exception (57%).

Dave, K7DV, great comments. I am a full-time RVer, will be on the road in about a month. Eventually Snow Bird in Arizona for the winter. I like what you said about your wife and family.

See you Digi-Hams next week.
