*Stations called for COMMENTS only

Wow! 35 stations on the Roster tonight. Although we started Early Ck-In a little late, Ck-In went like clock-work. Thanks for making a big Roster easy to compile. There were no Coattails or Doubles throughout Ck-In. You guys are awesome! Ck-In was supported by better-than-usual band condx. Good condx persisted thru the FLAMP Exercise and Traffic Round, but then began to fade and totally dropped numerous stations by net-end. Condx were sufficient for Chris K0PHP to successfully work the net from Missouri tonight. Maybe a first for Chris.

We can only accommodate ten stations in the FLAMP Exercise and it maxed-out quickly tonight. When we reach ten, we assign an * to Active Ck-Ins. CALLSIGN* denotes stations that NCS skips during the FLAMP Exercise and Traffic Round. These stations are called in the Comment Round as usual. Ten veteran Ops who’ve worked ORCA for years have a pre-assigned *. They can Ck-In with the * to skip the FLAMP Exercise, assisting NCS in managing net length. Tonight, we wrapped the net very close to our 1.5hr cut-off in spite of a record Roster. Thanks for your patience and focus. It’s a long time to remain alert and attentive; we understand. Our attention is totally consumed throughout the net, but you are waiting for your turn with lots of time in between.

Digital nets vary widely in format and function. Here’s a suggestion for using the time between turns to increase your situational awareness. Pay close attention to how other members interact with the net. Do their interactions reflect your understanding of net protocols? Noting how well others understand written instructions may improve your own comprehension and implementation. Reading comprehension is a major feature of the FLAMP Exercise. Understanding and implementing written instructions is fundamental to digital traffic-handling.

Welcome back to Clifford N0LKC in Montecello,UT, Aaron AG7GK in Mesa,AZ, Steve KB6HOH in Novato,CA, Bruce KB7VX in Chehalis,WA, and Doug KA7FOO in Reno,NV. Clifford will soon be camping for the winter months. He often checks in from campgrounds with solid field-antenna signals. Doug is currently in Reno, but will soon return to free-range radio operations. He spent last year traveling by RV. Bruce just returned home after a difficult 3mos medical assignment in California. You never know when one of these field stations will be the Relay that saves the day.

And, another ORCA record tonight. Sixteen Ops emailed their signal-evaluation images to NCS. Thank you! More images make a better presentation. Please send the actual images saved by FLDIGI. It’s important to know where FLDIGI stores RX images and how to manipulate them.

SK Report: We’re sad to report that ‘Larry Trullinger KB0EMB passed away after a brief medical problem’. Larry was among the first ORCA members in Missouri. He was an active Amateur Operator, instrumental in bringing other MO/KS digital Ops to ORCA. We’ll certainly miss him. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers. Our Thanks to Rick K0KEX for this timely information.

Thanks for your participation and support. Without you, we would not be a net. Your part is as significant as ours; we operate as a team. We often hear of Ops that never Ck-In, but Monitor and work the FLAMP Exercise solo. There are probably more Monitoring Ops than we would guess. These Operators are learning solid digital networking routines by observing your participation. While practicing your digital traffic-handling skills, you enable others to learn by observation and osmosis. It’s truly a pleasure to work with each of you.

Remember Western Digital Net on Thursday, same time/freq as ORCA, Steve K6ETA/NCS. We train and practice at ORCA and put our skills to work at WDN. WDN Rosters continue to increase; thanks for supporting our valued associate.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex188.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
Exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic round with FLAMP.

We recently changed net-format to enable Monitoring stations to CONFIRM the FLAMP
Exercise file or submit the OPTIONAL Exercise file. It appears to be a useful change.
After the Comment Round, we close the net to release those that need to leave. Then
we call for Comments from Monitoring stations. After Comments we’ll CONFIRM FLAMP
Exercise files, and send fills for the initial Exercise. Calling a Monitor’s session after
Closing takes advantage of improving condx at that hour.

We’re looking for volunteers to run some of the after-net Monitor’s session. If you’ve been
working ORCA for awhile, you’re almost certainly capable. It’s very easy and provides basic
NCS experience. You don’t need to send all fills yourself, you can engage other Ops to relay
fills for you. This extends participation and practice to more stations. Don’t worry about
an error or two; we’re supportive colleagues, working together, expanding our digital
skills. Let us know; we’ll help you prepare to succeed and enjoy yourself while learning.

This Presidential Election implies a chaotic aftermath. Odds are there will be even more
conflict following the election. EMCOMM is usually defined as supporting Civic Agencies,
but our own radio community may also need our support. We have the advantage of an
established network of experienced traffic-handlers; we can make a difference. With the
inception of WESTERN DIGITAL NET, we now practice on Tuesday and work on Thursday.
WDN completes a balanced package of Operator training and community support.

We attended the Zoom session of our County CARES (Curry Amateur Radio Emergency Service) this
weekend. Craig KD7CL, ARES EC in adjacent Coos County and ORCA member, gave a PP presentation
about his program using And-FLMSG with 2m HHs to engage newer radio Ops in passing traffic
between IC and field stations. Craig trains new Ops with HH radios to support EMCOMM with the
skills and equipment they already own. He’s also implemented the EyeWarn program in Coos County.
Check out EyeWarn, it may be useful in your community: http://www.eyewarn.net/participant-guide.htm

Please email the Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com for the Net Report. Thank You!

:mg:733 TNS) – The Great Burn of 110 years ago saw 1,700 fires across Montana, Idaho and Washington combine into one catastrophe scorching more than 3 million acres.

It destroyed whole towns and killed dozens of people.

Last week, Americans saw it happen again. No one’s given a name to the conflagration that incinerated almost 5 million acres of California, Oregon and Washington just in the last week, and filled Missoula skies with smoke.

Our amateur radio club hopes to provide AID station Comm’s for a canyon full marathon, yesterday however a Wildland fire has started placing the marathon in doubt. Band was up and down here tonight.

It’s good to be back! I missed my ORCA family!

After being forced to sleep 62 nights in the back of a rented pickup truck out in the Mojave Desert, while working a job during the day; it is even better to sleep in my own bed.

No smoke up here in Chehalis.

While driving back home through Medford, that city looks like a disaster area, and very smokey, all black on both sides of freeway for miles and miles. Looks like a few folks lost their homes, mostly it just looks black, burned out and hideous. I even had to drive over some red fire retardant that had been dropped on the freeway. It looks to me like someone intentionaly threw flammables out of their cars while driving by and for MANY miles on both sides of the freeway. There were other isolated such fires all the way north to Canyon Creek Pass.

Thanks for the ORCA training, Doug and Mindy and all ORCA ops.

Tried my hand at NCS the comment round of WDN last week. It went pretty smoothly all things considered. Working on setting up better macros. I will volunteer for NCS some of the after-net monitoring round next week. I have a few other things I have to do tonight. Sounds like another opportunity to get some practice. :)

Hope everyone is well.

Good weather and clear air today. Not too warm, but was a nice day. 5 days of clear air here.

Our club launched the repeater rehab today. But out tech has bin MIA for coax install, and then the commercial radio outfit failed to deliver too :( So much was done, but the repeater is currently off the air for at least the next several days. Sure looking forward to hearing it in its new location. So today we peeled of 70′ of the new Heliax. Only two more repeaters to go :)

Looks like another all time ORCA record tonight! Good work NCS’s!

Copied all 10 of 10 FLamp messages tonight. Personal record :)

Band is going long at 8:40pm. Noticed this last night during my net, great band until 10:55pm, then it went long. After that I worked station in Alabama on 3.790MHz!

Could copy my signal easily into several east coast states using SDR’s.

don’t want to keep you to long, just wanted to make sure is working right – I had ro rush and do a last minute computer set-up tonight, so looks like my typing is coming through better now that is was earlier in net.

ya, hope not – sure didn’t take long to shut the schools down again – lets hope this is the last time they have to do that, the kids are just getting used to going to class again, and now they have to switch everything around for 2 weeks. I just hope computer doesn’t die before they go back LOL

this must be so confusing for the childern.. not to mention the difficulty it’s causing for every family with childern in school…. I guess even those with kids beyond school age are seeing them come home again as they’ve lost their homes… these are really difficult time and may get a bit worse as the year unfolds < K7KY

at the school district did spend a lot of time getting prepared for the computer learning set-up and seems to be working good for the older two – but to early to really tell if they are learning anything or not. Glad to see that they are at least starting to get all the fires under control – that rain really, really helped with the air quality here. so hopefully it all stays good – today is the first day of fall to – so summer is officially over.

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
