The band was up to it’s Summer-time tricks again this evening. Darrell W6ADZ in Reno,NV copied the opening Test Image pixel perfect. The only perfect image of the evening. For some, condx improved a little; some saw no improvement all evening. Dave K7DV in Idaho Falls, ID could see NCS, but couldn’t decode the signal.

Condx changed for Dave as the evening progressed; he engaged the Amp and checked in late w/300w. We usually copy Dave w/o the amp, but he has difficulty copying us. We’ve had one-way path with Dave for months now. This is an ordinary Summer phenomena that has grown worse in the last few years. We used to have solid Winter path to Dave in Idaho Falls,ID and Gene W1EEP in Pine Valley,UT, but that has changed significantly. Last Winter was not much better than Summer for them.

Dennis W6DLW in Cedar City,UT has a new 30′ vertical antenna. He noticed and Relayed Keith WA0TJT calling NCS from Kansas City,MO. We don’t think anyone else heard Keith. Keith was surprised that anyone heard him as he couldn’t hear anyone himself. We’ll ask Keith about his antenna. They may both be Verticals.

NOTICE! ORCA DIGITAL NET shifts to Summer Schedule until 18/Sep/21. The FLAMP Exercise is suspended; we’ll run Ck-In and Comment Round only. Please Ck-In with your CALLSIGN Only to participate in Comments. Ck-In with QNX to make the Roster w/o participating. We’ll resume normal operations on 18/Sep/21. We hope you will continue to ck-in regularly; it’s important to remain engaged. Emergency communications may be required this Summer. We responded quickly when our services were needed during the CA/FIRES a few years ago. Since then, ORCA has added numerous accomplished digital Ops. Although we won’t be practicing weekly, we’re a cohesive network of experienced digital Ops and we’re well prepared to stand-up an Emergency net. The Comment Round will keep us in touch.

Our Summer Sked objective is to reduce overall net time. With daylight at maximum length, working a long net while it’s still light and warm outside is unattractive. The Comment Round will be our only time consumer. ORCA is interested in how things are going at your end and our comments may contribute to a better understanding our medical, social, and political circumstances. Remember our Amateur commitment to convey information as briefly and concisely as possible, saving time, energy, and bandwidth.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Jay KM6FCR in Kelseyville,CA. Kelseyville is adjacent to Clear Lake, a beautiful region of California, a bit North of San Francisco Bay. Although it was Jay’s first ORCA ck-in, he completed the FLAMP Advanced Exercise and CONFIRMED it during the after-net Monitor’s Session. Jay’s the first Op in our memory to successfully complete the Advanced Eercise in his first net session. Hats-Off to Jay. And, it’s well that he did; there will be no more FLAMP Exercises until 18/Sep/21 unless there’s significant requests for occasional Exercises. If ORCA members want a few Summer Exercises, we can add them easily.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex225.txt’, including an ADVANCED Exercise. If you complete the ADVANCED Exercise, send it when NCS calls you for Traffic. CONFIRM 100% copy of the primary file before working the ADVANCED Exercise. Monitoring stations can FILL or CONFIRM Exercise files in the after-net Monitor’s Session.

The ADVANCED FLAMP Exercise asks if you plan to work Field Day 2021 with an Amateur Radio Club. Listing your ARC CALLSIGN will give your ORCA colleagues a better chance to work your FD station.

Pre-Tone reminder: Pre-Toning is a thoughtful discretionary action. Digital Ops only Pre-Tone when doubling is likely. Check in is prime time for doubling. Many stations are on frequency and some stations do not copy everyone else. Pre-Toning is essential to avoiding avoidable doubles. Pre-Toning should always be done manually with the TUNE button on digital nets. We do NOT use FLDIGI’s automatic feature, ‘Pre-Signal Tone’.

Pre-Signal Tone has two drawbacks relative to manually Pre-Toning with the TUNE button. PST does NOT pause after the tone so you can look/listen for signals. Pre-Signal Tone follows the tone immediately with your content. And, it sends a Tone every time you transmit. There are more times during digital nets when you should not Pre-Tone than when you should. Sending an automated Pre-Tone when NCS calls you is unintuitive and redundant. When NCS calls you, the net knows you will TX next; Pre-Toning is unnecessary.

For email notice when the Net Report is posted, write: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

You see again this evening a very lite FLAMP Exercise. We’re thinking to alter the net during summer to ck-in and comments only. It’s important to keep our place on 3.581 and to stay current w/each other, but we’re all busy during Summer and this is a Summer like no other. Your thoughts on this are welcome during the Comment Round. < K7KY

We are getting ready for Field Day this weekend! Looks like it will be warm this year, but not as hot as it has been over the last week. We will be N7U again this year so keep an eye out for us!

ORCA < WA7HHE, snagged all the blocks on the second pass using MFSK 64. With the band being so difficult, I’d vote for going for summer comments only. Locally on our talk channel, W6DLW with his 30 ft vertical has the best copy here. < WA7HHE

FB Brad tnx 4 ur thoughts on summer net and good 2 hr abt W6DLW vertical it does sound good from hr BK
Next 4 Comments is Steve K6ETA* < NCS

K7KY < K6ETA I’m glad you clarified the need to pre-tone using the TUNE button manually.

It also helps queue up the stations trying to get in… first to tone should be first to key up (and the rest of the Net knows someone will be waiting/coming in after, etc.).

Lots of lightning in Southern Oregon tonight… static crashes all over the place.

Regarding the VARA signals just above us: So far my monitoring has only picked up Peer-to-Peer messages, which hopefully means there is NOT an automated RMS parked on a frequency that is way outside of the band plan’s allowance for automated stations.

BUT even if the signals are P2P only, those ops should be aware of how WIDE some of the VARA signals are, and stay well away from established NBEMS nets that are also occasionally switching to wider modes – OR limit themselves to VARA 500. Will keep monitoring. VARA is an excellent software modem, but people need to learn how/where/when to use it in such a way that it avoids overlapping established nets…

Regarding FD 2021 – My daughter’s wedding here is on 6/26, so it’s unlikely that I will be able to join the way I always do.

Great net as always and my hat’s off to the growing pool of capable ops out here! I copied 100% on first FLAmp traffic exercise.
BTN < K6ETA

RR Steve tnx 4 adding to the Pre-Tone info it’s really important and the mark of a digital Op who knows what’s up and if you copy any of the VARA ID’s I’d be happy to contact them… we’ve had 3 gateways here over the years and they hv all been very nice and moved quickly… these mosquitos are P2P I think BK John KS6M, ur up 4 Comments < K7KY

Pulse noise again severe tonight. Amazing what my Noise Blanker (NB) is able to do. CALLED PG&E power company and reported pole. I hope they can dial-in the noise and repair it. In the mean time, I found this from the June 2016 QST: www.arrl.org/files/file/RFI/MFJ-5008.pdf
Tomorrow, hope to order it as an aid in finding these noise makers!

Last night only two stations checked into local NBEMS net. We performed a full file manipulation exercise. Wonder how I ever came up with such a great idea?

Net activities are down across the board. Summer time and better WX is stealing our wonderful op’s attention!

Had a great pass from ISS today and was able to copy one and a half SSTV images. I am using my normal high gain dual band VERTICAL antenna to copy these signals since I don’t have a cross polorized yagi. I hope ops here give it a try, it’s amazingly fun! The frequency is 145.800MHz and you can find pass time online or with ANY ham
prediction software.

“Pre-Toning is a thoughtful discretionary action . . .” Last night I had a station use pre-tone as a tool to ensure only they could transmit, and jammed another station until they stopped transmitting. Yes, we need to educate the digital folks on proper proceeder of pre-tone & Listen B4 transmitting.

I am going to copy and share Steve’s comments on VARA. TU Steve.

Good night all, take care and hope 2 c u next week!

NCS/ Doug/Mindy, upfront I want to pass on my appreciation to both of you for being here each week to provide this most valuble training to the ORCA Group. Without your dedication and passion in providing FLDIGI and NBEMS Software training exercises I’m not sure I would have become interested. A big thanks to Brad for introducing me to the program. Again, thank you. Not much to share other than Summer Field Day is this coming weekend. You’ll be able to see the pictures in the July Newsletter. Summer comments sounds good to me. Weather cooled off to the high 80’s down from 100 dregrees plus last week. Please be safe. 73 to all W6DLW
