*Stations called for COMMENTS only

Let’s start right out with band condx. It was another weird band night. Stations in Missouri were working the net while stations near to, and north of, NCS could not copy. David KG7FGT in Zigzag,OR was lite at Ck-In and lost by the FLAMP Exercise. Far eastern stations were lite early in the net, but morphed to solid copy near net-end. Thanks for your patience and focus during difficult band condx. Ck-In was orderly; a large net flowed smoothly all evening. Even with our maximum of ten stations for the FLAMP Exercise, the Exercise went easily too.

Welcome back to Greg KG7D in Carson City,NV. Absence hasn’t diminished his digital skills; he hit the ground running. This may be the first net where everyone aced the FLAMP Optional Exercise. You’re making these Exercises look easy. They’re not actually that easy, but most regular ORCA Ops have learned them perfectly. We don’t try to make them difficult, but focus on relevance to actual traffic-handling on Traffic and Emergency nets. If you have suggestions for improving the FLAMP Exercise, we’d like to hear them.

ORCA DIGITAL NET will meet as usual through the Christmas/New Year Holiday. You may be busy with family and friends, but if you have time and inclination, we’ll be happy to see you on Tuesday evenings.

Western Digital Net Note: Steve K6ETA/NCS is moving from Petaluma,CA to MtShasta,CA during the Christmas Holiday. WDN nets fall on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve. There will be no formal Western Digital Net on those nights, but Steve encourages ORCA/WDN members to drop by 3.581mhz and say Hello. Ops are welcome to run a net as they like. WDN will resume schedule on 7/Jan/21.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex201.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic round with FLAMP.

Did you work WDN last Thursday evening? If you did, you’re unlikely to soon forget this
net. The regular NCS, Steve K6ETA, wasn’t on-freq. We didn’t know if he was absent or
just smothered by the band. Jaye KE6SLS took the initiative to team up with Brad WA7HHE
and take responsibility for WDN. Jaye compiled the Roster and Brad ran the net. He did
a great job; and, no surprise. He’s no stranger to nets and has worked ORCA for years.
He didn’t have a stable of WDN macros, but worked the net by keyboard with aplomb. We
had only one QST that night, but the band was terrible and Brad had a serious challenge
filling net stations. It required numerous repeats and relays.

This was a memorable moment. Brad rose to the task w/o hesitation. He’s been interacting
with digital NCS at ORCA DIGITAL NET for years. He’s observed and absorbed the NCS role
w/o effort. When called to duty, he was prepared with the fundamentals of digital NCS. He
did a great job with the sudden promotion and managed the net deftly by keyboard.

Many ORCA Ops are similarly prepared; we never know when NCS duties may fall to us in
unusual situations, like the immediate need for NCS last Thursday. You are probably better
prepared for NCS than you think. It would be wise to give it a go before your taken by
surprise (-:

Note: There will be no Western Digital Net on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve. We encourage
all ORCA/WDN Ops to stop by the freq anyway if they have time to say Hello for the Holidays.

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com
(another file location & manipulation exercise)

Mindy & I wish you a pleasant, relaxing, and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

NCS < WB7EUX – Installed a $35 SDR dongle this past week and experimented with CubicSDR selecting local FM broadcast and Safety frequencies. This SDR does not cover HF without an up converter. Very fun and interesting exploring this realm. However, turn key SDR systems for Amateur Radio can be fairly expensive. Stay tuned (ha ha).

All the best to you and yours and Happy Holidays! de WB7EUX

Pedaling to work this morning, the UNM billboard read 13 degrees Fahrenheit, under a cold, black, silent, starry sky.

Late last week, the hospital here began to offer the COVID vaccine to all of its employees. The lead ultrasound tech took it on Friday, and reported getting an immediate headache and severe pain at the injection site. The headache lasted all night until she took 600 milligrams of ibuprofen. Today, I overheard her saying that she is now experiencing flu-like symptoms. A nurse in the ICU had a similar story.

During this inital roll-out of the vaccine to health care workers, last Thursday, I viewd a 6 minute video posted online of a 42 year old, very pretty, lead nurse, with no history of health problems, who received the vaccine with news cameras rolling. She then walked over to the microphone and began to give an interview to a team of reporters, saying that she was happy that the vaccine was finally available and that her whole unit is looking forward to getting back to normal. But, then she began to get unsteady on her feet, put her hand to her head and apologized, saying that she was dizzy. She quickly recovered, and resumed the interview, saying a few more laudatory things about the vaccine; then paused, apologized again, and fell abruptly to the floor, unconscious.

Here is the link:

Today, the radiology supervisor made me fill out a “COVID vaccine declension form.”

Wind howling outside now. Storm coming in from the southwest. Probably more snow.

Happy Holidays to all at ORCA, especially Doug & Mindy. Thanks for all you do.

There’s a lot of research being done using Ivermectin (a well known drug with little to no side effects), especially in other countries. Worth looking into… Doug and I began our 1st preventative dose last week (horse paste), next dose tomorrow, then every 2 weeks.
