Beginning the net an hour later worked out well tonight.  Condx were better than we’ve had in the last few weeks and they improved as the net progressed.  Quite a contrast to last week’s net of nine ck-ins and two active stations. Five Oregon stations on tonight too; we’re always interested in connecting  our near neighbors.  Oddly, Oregon has been under represented on the net.  Tonight we welcome two new stations, John KS6M in Oakland,CA, and Tom KD6TR on Camano Island,WA.

We all want to remember ORCA’s mission of learning and practicing digital traffic operations.  A few of us are IT/ET/EEs, but the majority of us are appliance operators. Very good appliance operators, actually.  While learning, people make mistakes.  ORCA has always been fault-tolerant.  The main page of our website invites Ops to, ‘Improve your NBEMS skills in a supportive environment’.  A supportive environment encourages people to experiment and take risks.  ORCA is no walk-in-the-park; it requires discipline, focus, and practice.  Some of us have been working ORCA for over six years now.  Working ORCA is not as simple as it was a few years ago.  Let’s remember to give the new Ops the same support we’ve enjoyed.  I’m thinking of Mindy and myself here too; I’ve occasionally been a little sharp when the error derailed me and I lost focus.

We had more doubles tonight than usual, but still sub-average for a digital net.  Maybe some my doing, or not doing.  Following Comment round, we usually open the net to follow-up comments and comments from Monitoring stations.  I used to remind Ops to use Pre-Tone as doubles are now likely.  Last night I didn’t do this and we had a couple doubles.  We didn’t see pre-tones before the doubles.  Although we see both signals at NCS, the conflicting Ops may not see each other. It’s difficult to avoid signals you don’t detect.  Some doubles are enevitable; we usually do very well at avoiding the avoidable.

Mindy W7ZAP’s weekly FLAMP Exercise went nicely tonight.  She began in THOR-100, CONFIRMED directly by Jaye KE6SLS in Eureka,CA, and Doug KA7FOO in Reno,NV.  Five of the remaining six stations CONFIRMED the next pass in MFSK-32.  One station was lost. It went so quickly, we didn’t get to relay.  Everyone is doing really well with these complex Optional exercises involving PC file management and editing applications.

Nice to see Brad WA7HHE use an edited article for practice Traffic.  Brad always summarizes the article and includes a URL for those interested in more information.  Informative and personal messages are OK for Traffic.  We prefer the bulk of Traffic messages to be brief.  We’re here to practice traffic-handling.  When the net is large and/or slow, please hold longer files for another session.  Occasional images are also OK; we all like images.  Please use B/W images of less than 1min. Everyone appreciate it when the net runs smooth and brisk.  It can be a long wait for your turn when the net is large or condx slow us down.  You can help us manage net time and flow. We would be working in similar fashion on a traffic or emergency net. Long messages, color/large images are best shared after net.

Evaluation images from tonight’s

Following the net, I had a short QSO with Rick K0KEX in Smithvile,MO.  He’s our most regular distant ck-in.  Again tonight his signal was solid.  By net-end, condx are much improved. Rick reported some pretty scary WX. Heavy storms w/Tornados!  We checked the online lightning report; MO was dancing in lightning. And, note tonight’s ck-in map; the Pacific Coast is well represented.

Thanks for practicing with us tonight.  We hope to see you again next Tuesday evening.  73 Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS 21/MAY/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex120.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. We’ll again use the FLMSG Communications Log, ICS-309. If
you complete the optional exercise within, send that file to NCS in the
Traffic round using FLAMP.

FLAMP Tip:
When you’re down to filling the last 1 or 2 missing blocks on a difficult
band, you can send the missing block/s numerous times in the same session.
List them in the block window like this: 1,1 or 3,3,3 or 2,2,5,5 etc.

Expanding your digital-net skills:
Use ORCA’s Ck-In period to expand your digital skills by logging check ins
along with NCS. Shadow scribing for NCS by keeping a log during ck-in will
increase your situational awareness and help prepare you for an emergency
when NCS duties fall to you. Check your work when NCS sends the net roster.

We hope the change back to our 0230z start time won’t inconvenience too
many members. Solar Minimum is expanding our understanding of propagation.
It’s become a difficult lesson and it looks like more lessons ahead.

By 02:30 you are S9/+3dB s/n and mostly copyable. SId also S9, but zero cpy on THOR100. MFSK32-only
missing otn5lock (86%). Am sur jwould been 100% with a fill-in. Most after 03:00 are S9+.
Thancuh sat¯R for the relay on ck-in.
#te y plan on being active whetaTadc¼ve for mee still learning a lot anyway.
