Tonight’s net was unusual.  Band condx were about the same, but we experienced more doubles than normal. Overall the net went well. Some difficulties arise from not knowing or misinterpreting ORCA conventions and protocols.  We encourage new Ops to explore the website, and read the Quick-Start guide twice. Then, monitor enough sessions to learn how the net flows, what to expect from the net, and what the net expects from members.

For the FLAMP Exercise, PSK-250R did poorly in the first round; noisy condx are not it’s strong suite. One close-in station missed only two blocks, everyone else missed most of the file. Thor-50×1 did a bit better with two stations CONFIRMED. MFSK-32 CONFIRMED the remainder except for two stations that dropped out. There was a double in round one.

Nothing hinders a digital net like DOUBLES. We had more doubles tonight than usual. Band condx often cause unavoidable doubles when stations cannot hear each other. Some doubles are Operator Errors.  The FLAMP Exercise is complex and brisk. Occasionally, we call a station that doesn’t reply. When they don’t respond in 20-25sec, we call the next station. This implicitly cancels the previous call. That should be obvious. If the first station replies now, they’re almost certain to double the next station. That happened a number of times tonight. It slows the net while the doubled station resends. These doubles are not related to band condx; they’re avoidable. When you’ve not replied and NCS calls the next station, your window is closed. Stations that don’t respond are usually called again at the bottom of the Roster. Same for the Traffic and Comment Rounds.

MFSK-32 is our default mode. NCS determines net mode; if it needs to be changed, NCS makes that determination. We adhere mainly to MFSK-32, a known mode that works best for most ORCA Ops.  When you can’t work ORCA in the net mode, you can’t work ORCA. Sometimes, it happens. That’s radio.

For your traffic in the Traffic Round, you are free to activate TxID and choose a mode you think band condx will support. Other than that, NCS determines net mode. Same for Net frequency. Net frequency is where you find NCS.  You are expected to transmit on net frequency. All this is very basic for ORCA veterans, but maybe not to newer Ops.

If you want to keep up with the development of SATERN’s upcoming NBEMS Relay Exercise, you should ck-into the SATERN Int’l Digital Net on Saturday mornings. 1700z, 14.065, Olivia 16-1000, Ken AD5XJ/NCS. Copy the weekly SATERN Training Bulletin in MFSK-128 and usually an interesting image, also in MFSK-128. If you don’t decode Ken’s remote signal from Texas, relay stations will repeat the Bulletin and image following the net.  You can almost always CONFIRM the Bulletin.  It’s also good practice daytime traffic-handling on 20m. Ken begins taking Early Ck-Ins around 1500z.

Thanks for working with us again tonight. We appreciate your support and participation. Remember Western Digital Net on Thursday evening, 0230z/1930p, 3.581, MFSK-32, Steve K6ETA/NCS. Steve is looking for a few stations to learn the NCS role and run WDN on occasion. WDN is nicely organized, still small, and very easy to conduct. Steve has it all outlined on the website and provides macros to make the task even easier. Give it a go; it’s actually pleasant and interesting and will definitely increase your digital skill set.  You’ll be more capable and comfortable when the chip are down.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex179.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
Exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

We’re looking forward to the SATERN Exercise, NBEMS Across America. You can work SATERN
Int’l Digital Net every Saturday AM, 1700z, 14.065, Olivia 16/1000, Ken AD5XJ/NCS, to stay
current with Exercise planning and development. “This exercise is different from an actual
emergency where the message must migrate from one point to another quickly to be timely
and useful. During our training, the point is to learn how to do it with confidence and
reliability.” Snip from SATERN Training Bulletin, AD5XJ-20200718.213. Ken sends SATERN
Bulletins and images in MFSK-128.

If you’re interested in the full 18/Jul/20 SATERN Bulletin, we’ll send it after the net.

Every session we ask someone to Relay the call for Ck-In. There’s a simple macro for this
task on the website. This macro has recently changed. Replace the old Ck-In macros that
include, ‘In&Out’ or ‘QNX’, with this macro.

We appreciate receiving your Test images for the Net Report by email: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com
The images reflect band condx better than words.

That’s a wrap. Band condx were tougher than we thought… even when the first modes fail, we learn something about their characteristics and how they perform in tough condx we had two dropouts 6 CONFIRMED btn < K7KY

Nice exercise Doug. Good mode selection for comparrison… interesting to see how each mode does in tough band condx.

NCS < K6ETA / NCS COVID has me working from home from mid March through December 31st, so it’s a big change! I rather like it actually, though I do miss driving through the vineyards of Napa and Sonoma to/from the office.

On Thursday the 30th the WDN will need an alternate NCS as I will be passing through Bend on my way to Spokane at the time of the net! If anyone would like to try their hand, it’s been a rather simple net of 6-8 stations with light traffic. Give it a shot!

Thanks as always to the ORCA community for being so solid!

Had another good solar day here, only about 6 hours of sun, but plenty for my meager load! Marine layer set in around 5pm this afternoon.

Tnx for Doug’s help today. Doug, you can disregard my winlink message, Internet is back and I have made a hard copy of winlink nodes!

PSK250R doesn’t do well at all with fades are static crashes! I do hear a lot of static crashes tonight.

REMINDER: try to avoid using your TXID during net UNLESS you plan to change modes. We also need to pay attention to both the water fall, and the audio (we all should

listen to what is happening.)

I need to figure out how I can adjust my IF DSP, when I go narrow, it is right at the edge of our bw at 1500WF, making it wider brings in W1AW… learn learn learn!

Something interesting, some stations might have a better signal and db, but they might not get the traffic through as well as some stations with less signal and less db. There must be a reason why.

Please be safe all, want to see you for years to come!

UPDATE, kr7kr and kg7vvn FLamp 100%!

ORCA < K7KY
The weekly FLAMP Exercise is brisk and complex. You need to stay aware of your position in Rotation and be prepared to respond to NCS. It’s a bit like driving your car or flying your plane; you need to be mentally ahead of your current position. It takes practice and focus. When new to this Exercise, it’s best to work only the primary task until it’s familiar. Then work the OPTIONAL Exercise. There’s a lot to monitor and do!

The FLAMP Exercise questions, Tom, are not important. They’re there to give purpose to the various tools and features in FLAMP we use for traffic-handling. Ignore questions you don’t like and focus on the Exercise. You’re welcome to suggest questions too. We don’t know about a MARS Exercise.

There are a number of ORCA Ops capable of running WDN for Steve on July 30th. If you volunteer, I’ll back you up (-: BTN < K7KY

Thanks for ur comments Doug. Nice of you to support NCS too!
