Thanks for making a large ck-in a little less demanding. Years ago, newer Ops would coat-tail the current ck-in before we could reply. We would often catch two or three in rapid succession. Building a detailed roster by copy/paste between two apps take time and focus; FLDIGI has only one variable available for callsigns, so we can only process them one by one.

Tonight was an even stranger band than usual. QSB was extreme. Short skip was sketchy. Although we grumble about this Solar Minimum, we’ll look back some day to the time we learned digital operations and broadened our relay skills in very challenging band condx.  If you joined the Western Digital Net Roundtable last Thursday, you probably didn’t mind tonight’s condx. Thursday’s condx were the worst of this Solar Cycle, IMO.

ORCA DIGITAL NET welcomes Carlos W9FE in Bunker Hill,IL. We met Carlos a couple weeks ago when he was in QSO on 3.581+1700.  He graciously gave us a bit more space to run the net. Check his Bio; he’s very radio-active. 3.581 is becoming known as digital net turf.  It’s a very good thing too; we change modes frequently, often w/o notice.  Our signals can become very wide instantly. It’s good we don’t have many frequency neighbors beside ARRL CW practice. In the FLAMP exercise, we often switch from using 630hz to 1920hz.

Winter Field Day may not resonate well with those living in the chilly North, but the stalwart Rainbow Canyon ARC Ops in Cedar City,UT will be working from an ice-fishing tent. Their special-event call is W7U. Look them up and give them a call. Ken KR7KR is recovering from an illness and we wish him a speedy return to excellent health. Doug KA7FOO will be at the Quartzsite Hamfest in AZ by Thursday. There may be as many as 900 Amateurs attending this year. Another radio colleague, Randy K7AGE, is also at Quartzsite. You may know Randy from YouTube. He’s a global Elmer with dozens of excellent How-To Amateur Radio videos online.

Comments from the net:

Bruno KG7VVN ‘What a great net tonight! loved all the challenges being met and managed to make it work! This is the best way to learn’.

Steve K6ETA ‘The Western Digital Net is still in the planning phase.  We were able to relay a radiogram to the NTS folks, however, they were unable to process any FLDigi form formats, so there’s some work to be done on message conventions.

We are also looking at check-in and relay procedures. Early check-ins actually may make the net more difficult, so we may just use the 1930 PST / 0330z time to take all check-ins in quick sequence.

It was brought up that Utah might be a more central location for NSC in the western states, but that leaves out Hawaii and maritime mobiles we may work. A rotating NCS will be our eventual goal.

Once our conventions start to iron out the website will be next. Official launch to follow that… more as it comes!

Rough condx tonight! Not copying all stations BTN    <  K6ETA (Relayed by KR7KR)

Remember to ck-in with Steve for the WDN Roundtable tomorrow, Thursday, 1930p/0330z, 3.581. He’s still looking for ideas/suggestions to focus the new Traffic net. We had six ck-ins the first week and ten ck-ins last week. Last week’s condx were terrible and we spent a lot of time relaying. Tomorrow will be better. I hope!  We hope you’ll have time to drop by.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 22/Jan/2020

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex153.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that
file to NCS in the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

In the Traffic Round tonight, Gene W1EEP and Greg KG7D will demonstrate
off-net-freq traffic-handling. We’ll send them to another frequency to pass
their traffic while we continue with the Traffic. Normally, the Op with traffic
selects the freq, calls the receiving Op after QSY, and Rechecks first. I’ll
pick the frequency for them Tonight.

Ten stations checked in with Steve K6ETA for the WDN Roundtable on Thursday.
Band condx were very difficult. There were eight ORCA Ops and two of Steve’s
digital colleagues. If you missed that meeting, try to ck-in this Thursday evening,
3.581, 1930p/0330z. The initial success of Western Digital Net dependson our
support. Thursday’s WDN Roundtable will be the last before WDN goes live next
month. Let’s help Steve develop a Traffic net we’ll be proud of.

FLDIGI Macro Tip: Pressing ESCAPE instantly terminates a Macro.

Tnx, Mindy very quick exercise tonite… too bad we’ve lost Greg KG7D as he’s half the off-freq-traffic exercise, but no worries… things do happen… frequently

in radio especially digital radio… FYI we see someone trying to ck-in via vidid during the exercise… we really have no extra attention during the exercise

we both do the same thing in case one station fails, we can continue w/o bobble just a litte exrta practice for us but no time to answer calls and if u use Vid

Id pse make it horizontal the letter disappear too fast for us to read in vertical mode tu BK

The Western Digital Net is still in the planning phase. We were able to relay a radiogram to the NTS folks, however, they were unable to process any FLDigi form

formats, so there’s some work to be done on message conventions.

We are also looking at check-in and relay procedures. Early check-ins actually may make the net more difficult, so we may just use the 1930 PST / 0330z time to take

all check-ins in quick sequence.

It was brought up that Utah might be a more central location for NSC in the western states, but that leaves out Hawaii and maritime mobiles we may work. A rotating NCS

yes… the old pi kernel worked really well. I’m sorry I updated it. it broke the pi and it is now so slow as to be almost non-usable. I’m trying other distros,

have ubuntu on it now, but my lord, that GUI sucks and I hate it…. took me way to long to make the silly thing play nice with SSH. I am actually copiing you on

a terminal on this laptop from the pi behind me. it’s poky but works…. . just waiting for the bands to be a little kinder, gentler, :)

okayk I better run along. try to chk in with my cousins tonight. U guys are great and sure am impressed with this group of amazing operators.

Ur S9 & 0db 100% cpy… I put NOOBS v3.2.1 & Raspiespn on me Pi. What OS do u use? < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA Lotta QSB ur last dropped to -7dB but 100% cpy. I use Raspbian Stretch and the newest one too (forgot its name)lhBut with the RPi usually the key is

having a new (not ¨apo) SD card. The fastst way to kill a Pi is to unplug it while it is writing to the SD.c otq<So shutting down properly is important. jtnI think the

latest is Raspian Buster IIRC BTUt9a < K6ETA

K6ETA < K7KY RR I’m using Raspbien Desktop I think I should have used Raspbien w/o desktop as there’s not much here for sound. that’s where my issues are…

oddly, it worked soon after i configured it, but by the next day things went south I’ve forgotten much linux , but I’m still hving some fun btu < K7KY

Y < K6ETA Onlt 30% cpmBokc tny that. MMindy’s antenna seems better in this directions for some reason??? Anyway Raspbian Buster is the way to go on a Pi3 . Everything

works really well for Ham applications. < K6ETA
