Overall, 80m was better than usual tonight. We did lose contact w/John KS6M in Oakland,CA before the Comment Round. That’s not unusual when NVIS fades. It usually hinders Steve W7WSV in Mesa,AZ too, but not tonight. By the Comment Round, only Mindy W7ZAP copied Jaye KE6SLS in Eureka,CA, about 90mi South of NCS. Oddly, Jaye is off the end of Mindy’s 137′ Doublet. Normally, the 210′ E/W antenna does best with Jaye.

Christmas Sked is similar to Summer Sked, Without the NBEMS Exercise/Traffic Round, we wrapped the net in 52min. Before the Comment Round, Dennis W6DLW sent the test image by macro. See how others copied his signal below. We’ll use the Path Evaluation Macro to learn more about how well net-stations copy each other. This will help us select the best Relay station for Filling FLAMP traffic.

We’re looking to spend less time and energy on ORCA without diminishing the net. Our thoughts are to run the NBEMS Exercise once a month on the last Tuesday. For the other 3-4 sessions, we’ll have a much simpler Exercise. We’ll send a brief QST or Tip file in FLAMP, take REPORTS, and Fill. No Advanced Exercise or Traffic Round. This still provides basis traffic-handling practice, with a bit of useful information, but reduces overall net length and eliminates the need for the after-net Monitor’s Session.

For these changes to be helpful, we hope a few of you will be interested in conducting some of the simple exercises. We’re still responsible for net operations; you would send a ±2min file, take Reports, and Fill. You’re welcome to conduct the following Comment Round if you like, or we’ll take the net back after your exercise. Some of you are doing this on VHF already. You will have our enthusiastic support. It’s a great opportunity to learn a little of Net Control with the support of your colleagues.

One or two Ops to take one evening monthly would get us going. If no one is interested, we’ll make this change anyway, hoping some will see how easy it is and give us a hand. Not to worry; we won’t leave you dangling in the wind. We want you to be comfortable and successful. Once a month, send a brief file in FLAMP, take Reports, and Fill the net. It’s great practice for the day you find yourself in the NCS role by default. Nearly every ORCA Ops is already well qualified for this task.

Western Digital Net has had guest-NCS the last two sessions. Steve K6ETA has been out of town and may be for a few more weeks. If he has access to a station, he may be there on Thursday, but maybe not. He’s revised NCS Macros on the WDN website. It’s an opportunity to run a well structured net with established macros. Check out the WDN website and call the net for Steve if he can’t make it. Jaye KE6SLS and Doug K7KY have called WDN for Steve a few times already; both are digital NCS and don’t need the practice. It’s an opportunity to run an easy net with friendly and supportive members.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR HOLIDAY SKED: No NBEMS Exercise until next year, 04/Jan/22. Ck-In and Comment Round only.

Before the Comment Round, we’ll ask one station to send our test image with the Path Evaluation Macro. Please include that image with the usual test images. We’ll publish the additional images separately. We’ll see how everyone copies that single station. More knowledge of net-station signals will help us choose Relay stations more efficiently.

We’re happy to have two light-duty sessions for the Christmas Holiday. We’re busier than ever these days. Doug is less physically capable and Mindy spends more time on homestead chores and helping her Mom. We have less time and energy for ORCA. We’re hoping some of you will be interested in helping conduct net sessions.

We used to think some members would be interested in learning the NCS role, but it wasn’t to be. Now, we hope some may be willing to help us with portions of the net. Conducting discreet portions of the net gives experience controlling the net w/o responsibility for the entire net. We’ll run the net as usual; you can lead a simple FLAMP Exercise. Send a brief file and fill missing blocks; that’s it, no Advanced Exercise. Some of you already do this on VHF nets.

Most ARCs meet in the 1st or 2nd week each month. There are 4 or 5 Tuesdays. We propose running our traditional NBEMS Exercise once per month on the last Tuesday each month.  The other sessions can have a regular guest member sending a brief QST, filling missing blocks, or having a Relay send fills. It’s not difficult and gives easy practice leading the net.

We’d like to have a net-member send & fill a brief QST on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday. We’ll handle the 2nd, 4th, & 5th Tuesdays. One station can kick this off. We would like to see one of our veteran Ops with a solid signal in this role.  You don’t have to do it forever. This is a big team and once we get rolling, others will see the value and help conduct the net.

We once thought to close ORCA after 7yrs, but realized there was still strong interest in learning and practicing digital networking and traffic-handling. Interest is still strong and we’re experiencing major changes in political, social, and financial norms. Our digital networking and traffic-handling skills may be in greater demand very soon. Helping conduct the net will definitely broaden and deepen your digital skills and we’ll appreciate your help.

Think it over. We only need one volunteer to begin. Send and Fill a brief QST on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday, we’ll do the rest. In a few months, others may be eager to replace you. There are other ways to make this work and it would be even easier with three volunteers. Let’s discuss it during the Christmas Holiday.

B4 we begin the Comment Round, we send one test image and ask you to include that image with the regular test images for publication.  We’ll ask Dennis W6DLW  to use his Path Evaluation Macro for this exercise…     if your macro is ready Dennis, pse send it now  tu

Season’s Greetings to all ORCA ops. Last week after ORCA I decided to sleep over in the camper in the vacant lot I was using just west of West Plains, Missouri, because I had been on call the night before and only had 3 hours of sleep. In the morning there was a knock at my door. The owner of that piece of property wanted to know why I was camping on his property and what was that giant antenna. Ooops! I apologized, and explained my predicament, that I had been too tired and the rain made it dangerous to take down the antenna in the dark. I will not be able to return to that nice spot. Tonight I am in another vacant lot accross the street from the RV park where I am living.  It is actually closer and there is a concrete foundation from an old building.  Okay, let’s see if the cops run me out.

I HAVE AMRRON INTEL BRIEFING FOR RELAY TO WDN.

Testing my new doublet in the desert. It appears to be doing fine. Receiving a good signal. It took a long time to construct I was able to get it up above 33-35 feet (no trees here) and has two legs one oriented North to South and the other East to West. Both extending over 137 to 140 feet not counting the ladder line wire.

When I arrived there was a lot of snow in the valley. Hope all will have a nice holiday season. Tons of stars tonight but a series of storms heading this way all week. Stay safe 73 Don

Start with the 6.2M Earthquake that struck yesterday at 12:10 PST. It was a real waker-upper to say the least. Over 31 more after shocks rounded up the day. As usual, I reevaluated my emergency action plan.

It is ironic that I had ordered a small chest freezer to store the perishable proteins. This was part of my emergency plan. . . It arrived about 1 hour before the quake hit!

Today I put in an instacart order at Costco. The driver/shopper is fantastic. He picked up my first order about 5 weeks ago and I was happy he got today’s order. HOWEVER, there is a difference of about $75 between what I was charged and what I should have been charged. Will be contacting instacart about that . . . :|

Utah stations are heard well here tonight. I decided to relax on a full reception report :)

It has been wonderfully and UNUSUALLY warm last two days here in Eureka. Morning sunrise temps between 55 and 58 degrees. I was surprised to hear the temps on the other side of the Trinity mountains, with most reporting in high 20’s or low 30’s. Score one for coastal weather :)

HAPPY SOLSTICE to all!! Tomorrow with be a few minutes longer than it was today. This was always my mom’s most favorite day of each year. Thinking wonderful thoughts about my mom here. . My she RIP.

Glad to have some food here. The little chest freezer was a great idea and I am grateful to have it. Should run no more that $21 per year to keep it on.

REMEMBER: Fire up your VHF rigs and an SSTV program for ISS: The ARISS team will be supporting SSTV operations from the ISS during the period of Dec 26-31. The images will be related to lunar exploration. The transmissions should be available worldwide on 145.800 MHz. The planned mode is PD 120. Start – Dec 26 about 18:25 UTC Stop – Dec 31 about 17:05 UTC

My fingers are crossed for your ham buddy Brad!

Bruce, good work! Great copy here and now I have a working ROSTER!

Don, your signal is pounding in here, well above 10DB! Good work!

I have some great booze, some great eggnog, yeah, it’s that TIME OF YEAR :)

Stay warm & dry. Be safe and keep the peace. Enjoy the holidays and Festivous!

As always, I’m tipping my hat to our amazing NCS’s. TU guys.

FB Mindy & tnx for another solid reception report   BK thanks to everyone that’s been supporting ORCA for years    we really enjoy working with you and plan to continue…   We’re thinking to only run the NBEMS Exercise once a month and on the other evenings we’ll have a very brief exercise with a simple file..   An informative QST or operating tip  something like that, but no Advanced Exercise included.  We hope some of you will come aboard and help us conduct that simple 1 file exercise every week…   It will keep our oars in the water and maybe give us a bit more free time for homestaead chores etc..   < K7KY
