Quite a turnout tonight!  23 check-ins and five new stations.  ORCA Welcomes, Ted KI7DWZ in Coos Bay,OR, Doren WA6MVP in Brookings,OR, Bob N7RBP in Medford,OR, Craig N6SBN in Capitola,CA, and Rex WB8TDG in Dayton.OH.  Yes, Dayton,OH!  Best band condx we’ve had in months.  Welcome back to Jim KA6JIM in Eureka,CA.  Jim’s been around since ORCA’s early days of HF/VHF.  Thanks to each of you for your patience and attention.  Despite a large ck-in, a few doubles, and a couple NCS errors, the net ran much as usual.  A tribute to the time you’ve invested in practice.

I short-circuited the optional FLAMP exercise by miss-typing my email address; a key element in the exercise.  Thanks to Bob for the quick notice, giving me time to correct it on the air. When you have net-buiness traffic like this, please be brief and concise.  In this case, Bob sent the entire email-error report, nine lines of text saying the email bounced. Telling me the email bounced would be sufficient informaton for me to find the error quickly.

We’ll do more of these optional exercises in locating, saving, and retrieving files on the PC file system.  Lots of images tonight.  You’ve probably noticed that FLDIGI doesn’t return to RX when sending an image from the TX buffer.  I’ve asked about this on the Linuxhams group, but no replies yet.  Sending images by macro <IMAGE> is also easy and fldigi returns to RX automatically.

Pre-Tone:  For those new to ORCA and a reminder to the veterans.  Our diligent use of pre-tone is a big factor in reducing doubles during nets and enhancing net discipline. Pre-toning when doubles are likely is the  mark of an experienced digital Operator.  Speaking of net discipline, ORCA seems to discipline itself.  The membership has practiced traffic routines long enough to synchronize with each other in a harmonious team.  No need for NCS to oversee net activities.  New Ops learn the routines by monitoring a few nets and they meld into the net with little disruption.  ORCA mostly manages itself w/o being pretentious.

Here’s the images from tonight’s FLAMP exercise and the Traffic round:

ANNOUNCEMENTS 20 February 2018

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex57.txt’,
a digital-traffic and file-manipulation exercise. Complete
the exercise this evening, during or after net.

Knowing your way around the PC file system is important to
handling digital radio traffic. You may be storing and forwarding
messages, or sending them on by other delivery methods. We want
to be handy at the peripheral PC tasks too. Typing and file
management are essential skills for handling digital traffic.

We’ve begun adding items to the SK-SALE page this week. Not all
items are priced, but they’re up and we’ll price them as we can.
You’re welcome to make an offer on any item. This sale will likely
take us a couple months to complete. We’ve not begun to inventory
the actual station. Check the page now & then; we’ll be working on
it weekly. http://orcadigitalnet.com/sk-sale/

Net Report posted as soon as we can…

I’m running fldigi on raspberry pi tonight. Very good copy on flmsg and flamp (once it was opened) as well as keyboard. It looks like this $37 computer can run my IC-7300 and fldigi quite well. I see the raspberry pi as a battery powered backup in case of an emergency with power outage. Since the whole system is on a micro SD card, one can copy the card and clone the working fldigi system onto any pi (version 3). Just copy the card, insert it, and it should work just like mine.
