Great job to all for focus & attention; for such a large net, we moved along very smoothly tonight. A small coronal hole sent solar winds our way, improving band conditions for a change. Better band conditions certainly played a part in more stations checking in tonight. We had our 2nd largest net in ORCA history with 3 new stations joining us: Dave AG7TX in Carson City,NV, Brian K7TKT in Meridian,ID, and Cowan N5QDH in Farmington,NM. Rick K0KEX in Smithville, MO was able to check in at the end of the net and was 100% copy in SW/Oregon.

Doug K7KY used THOR-50×1 (176wpm, 900hz) for the FLAMP exercise and filled with DominoEX-22 (160wpm, 524hz) and MFSK-32 (120wpm, 630hz), CONFIRMing all eleven stations. In difficult band conditions we would have needed a lot more time to CONFIRM eleven stations. We need to consider how to accommodate an increase in participation without sacrificing training and practice.

A new twist on the FLAMP exercise had Ops using both ‘Originator’ and ‘Responder’ tabs on the ICS-213 form, then return that form using FLAMP to NCS during Traffic. We were fortunate the band enabled us to fill every station. Many commented about the flow of the net and/or the size. Thanks to each of you, we operated like a ‘well oiled machine’. It was an impressive net all the way around and a joy to be involved.

The FLAMP exercise generates traffic for the Traffic round. When you can’t CONFIRM the FLAMP exercise message, you’ll need a brief practice message pre-prepared or send QRU. Sending QRU during the Traffic round will help reduce net-time when we’re busy. Steve K6ETA does this regularly. He’s been with us for years and knows the routines perfectly; he defers to newer Ops when the net is large. When the net is large and you’ve been with us long enough to know all the routines, you can pass the Traffic round with QRU and save a little net time for the newer members.

Thanks to the stations that email their Evaluation images for the net report. They’re a great illustration of copy and propagation at each Op’s QTH.

Looking forward to next week; another coronal hole should be facing Earth over the weekend and we may catch the tail-end of the solar winds. Hope to see you all on the WF next Tuesday.

73,
Mindy W7ZAP

ANNOUNCEMENTS 20/Aug/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex133.213’,
an FLDIGI/FLAMP/FLMSG exercise. Parse carefully, this exercise
is different. Send your reply to NCS in the Traffic round in FLAMP.

During Ck-In, we usually ask someone to relay the Ck-In call.
You can do this by keyboard or macro. There is a simple Ck-In
relay macro on the Macro page of our website. Copy the macro
and paste it into a macro button.

In an emergency, we will almost certainly be handling Health &
Welfare traffic. If you’re not familiar with the ARRL Radiogram,
now is the time to learn it. It has a small learning curve, but
it’s not complicated. Instructions are widely available online.
After served-agency traffic, we will be handling H & W traffic.
Sometimes, it might be our only task.

Thanks for emailing the ORCA test images. They enhance the
Net Report.

Great net tonight. NCS was coming in great with a s/n well over 3 to 7. Got the THOR 50×1 message the first time. I think that was a first! Glad to help with the Relay!

This is our Welcome Back week at SUU. I wish we could just have one meeting instead of days of meetings… Oh well the fun part of teaching (the actual teaching) starts next week!!!

We just closed on our new property so I may try to check in from a new site in the near future!

Have a great night and rest of the week! 73s everyone!

Really good copy on the ID and UT stations tonight. What a treat :)

Had noisy neighbors on both sides of our net tonight. IFsift only limits one side, I need more money to buy net rigs! :) But look at my copy stats TONIGHT. Almost all stations heard well in Eureka. Big net and it rolled so very well like a greased rail.

Responder tab, hmmmm. My old FLamp doesn’t support that here.. Oh, but FLmsg does! Eureka! I need to try the Responder directly some time without FLamp.

Interesting. Good EX again NCS! TU

My kitty boots got hurt last Monday evening, can’t walk on this front left leg. Had him inside all week, and boy oh boy did that little buster get grumpy being locked in all that time. Let him out today and he was gone until after 6pm, really had me worried. I’m treating him with antibiotics and hope his foot returns to normal use SOON. He’s my little shack kitty that usually helps me out during my NCS work!

Tower comes down tomorrow. Carl as done a ton of work here for me the last week. I now have a vent over my stove and a new shelf to boot. My patio wiring is now WORKING. Thank god for good hams! Hope to get the new tower up in a week or so with new feeders/antenna for HF and new coax for VHF/UHF high gain antenna. New antenna will be twice as high, hope it helps my copy on some of you DX stations.

We had a magnificant sunset tonight. I’ve noted that that nightfall is getting earlier and earlier–bracing for fall/winter.

73 all, sure good seeing you on the wf. Have a GREAT week!

Will be on the road next week. Eagle Lake (Susanville) for first stop, then SE Oregon. Back to Reno for a DR appointment. Then hitting the state parks across the northern portion of Nevada to Elko, then turn south to Las Vegas.
Will be using a dipole, or random wire, or a vertical.

This old laptop overheats working FlDigi. Proccessor is sitting on a wet sponge cooler at the moment. Time for a new laptop!

On the phone with Darrell, W6ADZ. He says hi to all.

Enough from me.

Tnx Mindy,
You can help us read your VidID on the WF by unchecking all five boxes @ CONFIG/ID/Video. This prints a large font horizontally. It’s much easier to read than the small font and doesn’t disappear as quickly as vertical print. If we don’t see the vertical VidID quickly, so of the letters are gone.

Nice work parsing the exercise and working both tabs on the ICS-213 tonite!

John KS6M We usually monitor the freq b4 net and record those we think are likely to ck-in. No obligation intended. We used to send that early list to see if there are errors. btn < K7KY
