Band condx were better than usual tonight. We logged 30 stations. The stations furthest East tonight are Chris K0PHP Columbia,MO and Rick K0KEX in Smithville,MO. Let’s hope 80m continues to improve, enabling our Eastern colleagues to participate. They have another impediment; they’re two time zones away. Hopefully, keeping our sessions to one hour will make their participation a little easier.

We don’t track net statistics, but some trends just stand-out from the background. The digital Ops from Rainbow Canyons ARC are usually outstanding. Tonight, they’re 20% of the Roster and 85% of the NBEMS Exercise. We really appreciate these guys; they’ve been with us for years and play a big part in ORCA’s success as a digital training net. Today, ORCA is supported and sustained by numerous outstanding digital Operators. Most have been with us for years and those joining recently are of the same caliber. Together, we’ve grown far beyond the emergency-traffic training net we initially envisioned.

For Net Control, we’re using FLDIGI v#4.1.20 that we now know has PC processor issues. Both our stations slow down quickly during nets. Tonight we had to hand-off and reboot; we’re prepared for events like this and it went smoothly. To publish the log, we’ll have to paste 3 captures together. It’s one of the surprises we practice for. Next week, we’ll try an Alpha version that addresses this issue.

By next Tuesday, we hope to have finished the Path Evaluation Macro. Install instructions and our test image will be downloadable at the website. We’ll use it to evaluate signal paths between one net station and all net stations, and between all net stations and Net Control. First, we’ll get the Macro working for everyone. Then, we’ll use it during nets. We may discover other uses along the way.

Please think about the utility and downsides of establishing a contact-list for emergencies.  Although more and more Ops are using 3.581 these days, we don’t know of anyone monitoring the freq 24/7. In an emergency, it would be handy to contact helpful Op by TEXT or phone.  HF often requires distant stations for Relay. When all local Ops are occupied, a distant NCS would be helpful. Many hands make tasks easier. A contact-list also has privacy and security issues. They may be sufficient to scuttle the idea.  Our thinking is, only those on the list would have a copy. We’d like to know your thought on the matter. If the concept interest you, please contact us @: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com.

ORCA is a DIRECTED Net, dedicated to learning and developing
digital operating skills and practicing NBEMS traffic handling.
ORCA connects Amateur Operators with common interest in
training, information-sharing, and mutual-aid.
Practice makes perfect!

New to ORCA? See: http://orcadigitalnet.com/quick-start/

Following check-in NCS sends:
1) Signal evaluation image (30sec)
2) Rotation list
3) Announcements

NBEMS Exercise:
Have FLAMP open. Stay Focused, Exercise is brisk.
Monitors can work the Exercise silently and FILL
or CONFIRM in after-net Monitor’s Session.

Traffic Round: NCS calls FLAMP Exercise Stations
for practice traffic (Advanced Exercise files).
No Traffic? Send ‘QRU’.

Comment Round: RX reports, observations, questions,
comments, or brief QSTs w/reference URL.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

We’ll run another Mode Shoot-Out with OFDM soon. We still don’t know word-speed, but the Developer, John KF4YFD, once published these figures:

OFDM-500F is four-times faster than MFSK-32 (64bps –> 250bps)
OFDM-750F is eight-times faster than MFSK-32 (64bps –> 562bps)

He also said OFDM isn’t as robust as MFSK, but will do well with large files on VHF and HF in good condx. We’re working on another Macro Exercise. We’ll use it to reveal path conditions, one member-2-all members, and all members-2=Net Control. It should be ready to go next week. The Macro and Instructions file, and the ORCAtest image, will be available for download on our Mainpage: http://orcadigitalnet.com

We’d like your thoughts on developing a contact-tree of ORCA members. It would enable members to obtain HF digital support quickly in time of need. Few members, if any, monitor 3.581 24/7. The ability to contact others for NCS or Relay support could be urgent. A contact-tree brings up privacy and security issues for some, but enough may be interested to make it useful. The list would be held by listed members, not generally available, and not published on the website. TEXTING often continues to work when the phone system is overloaded. Your thoughts? Did u notice the glitch when Announcement began? the recent FLMSG somehow causes the next FLDIGI TX to start and stop… I hope the fix it soon… Next is the NBEMS Exercise w/Mindy W7ZAP < K7KY

The storm dropped golf and tennis ball-sized hail on Norman, along with heavy rain and winds, during a tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service. Already getting quite a squirt from tonight’s wx. Expected rainfall at 8 INCHES. Expecting wind over 40 MPH. Already over quarter inch on the rain gauge.

Attended outstanding ARRL learning WEBINAR today. Topic was Raspberry Pi’s in the hamshack presented by Jason KM4ACK. Jason has written a program for the Pi’s that installs any or ALL ham radio programs with a few clicks. Going to try it out tomorrow!

As ORCA began, I checked into the Senoma/Mendo Emergency Phone net, then moved down to check in with ORCA. All the while, enjoying a nice ZOOM forum locally regarding Winlink 2000 basics. HOWEVER, our host lost internet connect after ISP went down in tonight’s storm! Going to be a bumpy night.

Carl KM6LIQ came over today and shared lunch. Then set out to remove plastic guy line tensioners with aluminum CAM LOCK ones I found on an ARRL advert. Those camlocks are amazing and the ones I bought are rated for 800 pounds! Hopefully that will keep my wonderful HEX beam safe and sound through the windy winter months.

This station is wondering how A.R.S. K7KY & W7ZAP are holding up?

Stay well, be safe, and keep peace in your hearts.

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
