15 check-ins tonight and all on the roster before 0230z. Calling for early check-ins has made completing the roster much easier. Digital check-in pileups are harder to sort out than phone where you can usually catch enough of the doubles to recognize callsigns. Digital doubles usually print gibberish. VideoID’s also speed up check-in.

After talking with Jaye KE6SLS @ 1500, I also copied videoID’s from Howard KB6NN just below and Steve KB6HOH just above. Very helpful at a busy net time. A number of our members use videoID regularly. It’s also useful for getting my attention during the net for comments, questions, checking-out, etc.

VideoID has a slightly different sound that catches my attention when I’m working another app and not focused on FLDIGI. VideoIDs are easier to catch when they are horizontal in the large font. I usually run the net using a narrow BPF. I leave this filter off for check-in so I can see callsigns. Tonight, I forgot to reset the filter after check-in. This degrades my s/n ratio. Not good on a crummy band night.

We made a number of NCS mistakes tonight too. Wide open BPF, antenna switching error, REPORT prompts out of order, etc. Still, the net ran rather smoothly. A testament to the skill, focus, and attention of our membership.

The antenna error eliminated the weekly FLAMP exercise that contained the Template exercise instructions. We’ll continue with that exercise next week. Actually, these unanticipated events are good practice. I’m more comfortable with things going astray than I was a couple years ago.

When I resent the Template file prior to the weekly exercise, I discovered the band was worse than I thought and MFSK-32 didn’t cut it. We filled all stations with MFSK-16. Although MFSK-16 is slow, it’s also robust. After the net, Doug KA7FOO and I completed his FLAMP file, again using MFSK-16 to fill the final missing blocks.

No wonder copy was difficult in UT tonight.  Check out the test image Gene W1EEP received:

RX: W1EEP UT

Welcome back to Linda KG6PBX in Cedar City,UT, and first time check-in Harold K7EV in Lilliwaup,WA. Harold was having a strange anomaly; his print was very unusual. The beginning and end of each TX look normal for about 20 or so characters, but then each character was spaced out with little squares. So much space between characters it was hard to tell what was said. I’m curious to learn the cause.

Thanks for flowing thru the glitches and retaining your focus. We enjoy working with you and look forward to next Tuesday evening. 73 Doug K7KY

K7KY and the net de WA7HHE, band condx really down tonight here, was really impressed with the solid print of MFSK 16, attempted to use it for my FLMSG but found message was too long for the mode and forgot to turn on my Tx ID so that tripped me up also. Noticed my TxID came on when i REPORTED via FLAMP. Will revisit Config optioning.

With all the problems, net was a good learning experience on this end. Thanks Doug and Mindy for the opertunity.

I had a system crash just as net was turned

over to Mindy. No copy on messa`

Band has taken a big dip … but it turned out

being a “bad antenna”!

Sorry for Traffic being to big, never know what

the band will do … it did tonight!

It is the “Leave it to (KA7FOO) Doug” show.

Good net though. I got the template to load.

Ready for next week!

The MFSK16 seemed to do the job tonight although

I had the message by that time. I have seen MFSK

do some amazing stuff.

KA7FOO

KA7FOO Tnx Doug yes MFSK-16 is solid and robust, but not too fast.. anyway, we’ve come thru a tough up&down band and still kicking.. I’m not going to ask Harold K7EV to comment tonight… I’m not certain what’s up with his tx the letters are space out by little faded squares.. I’m wondering if it’s a Mac issue… we can look at it again after net when we fill KA7FOO’s file… Next we go to Mindy W7ZAP < K7KY

ORCA welcomes K7EV Harold and a welcome back to KG7PBX Linda. Darn! Messed up when I switched to Doug’s antenna. Sorry for the confusion in the FLAMP round.
