The “Cannibal CME” wasn’t as terrible as predicted. With 21 stations logged and six Active stations working the NBEMS Exercise, we wrapped the net in 41min. Three stations utilized the after-net Monitor’s Session.

The NBEMS Exercise was flawed. Five of six stations completed the Exercise; one station didn’t understand the instructions. 83% understood and executed instructions correctly. Our goal is 100%; we mean to be brief and concise.

Exercise instructions omitted two essential Macro Tags, <TXRSID:on> & <@TXRSID:off>. The Macro changed Mode from MFSK-32 to MFSK-64 and back to MFSK-32, but lacked the Tags required for automatic Mode change. This omission provided an unanticipated opportunity to practice situational awareness. Watch signals closely; when TxID fails or is forgotten, you can change mode manually and still copy some and maybe all of the transmission.

We manually change Modes quickly because we have Macro buttons for most-used Modes. It takes a lot more time to change Modes when you must open and scan the Mode list. With Mode buttons in your Macro set, you can change modes quickly with a single mouse click.

Thanks to Lamar AE6LJ for describing his method for including Mode-ID w/TxID for Mode change. With Mode printed @ 1500wf we can manually change quickly when TxID fails. This tactic is particularly useful to Net Control Stations addressing numerous receivers. As Lamar suggests, it can also be useful when calling CQ. You can review his tactic details in the Net Log (below).

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise entails creating a Macro on-the-fly. Although we’ve done much of the work for you, Macro execution will
refresh your memory of special-purpose Tags. Occasionally, you need a new Macro right now. If you’re handy with the FLDIGI Macro
Editor, you can alter or create Macros quick enough for immediate use. It’s a particularly useful skill for Net Control Ops. If you weren’t
aboard when we explored Macro development, hang in there, we’ll return to Macros this Summer. Meantime, review FLDIGI User Manual
Ch18 and practice altering & making Macros.

Have you been thinking band condx are difficult, but better condx are on the horizon? We expect Winter to improve condx, but Solar
Cycle #25 isn’t predicted to get much better b4 it deteriorates. For more information: https://thesilicongraybeard.blogspot.com/2023/07

Are you familiar with the term, “Cannibal CME”? That’s what hit today. Check it out here:

Tom WA7JYK is up first < NCSf p tpepctara ¿ z FJWB7EUX – In the realm of radio, not much going on. However, with the call sign
change I also had to change the call sign in the 10m beacon I run at 28.202. The ham that built the transmitter has made the modificati
on to the firmware of the keying section and also made a repair to an LED, all for free. I hope to have the beacon back on the air by this
coming weekend.

I see I missed one spot in the fldigi suite to change my call sign — flamp. Changed now!

Ok, that was a GREAT exercise! Learned a bunch. Thanks to Doug and Mindy for another training opportunity.

All is well. 73 de WB7EUX

The new Rpi4 arrived here last week. Today I opened the package and
was going to install it into my Rpi4 housing, but realized I don’t
have any heat goop. Have a new image I am going to test once I get
the goop and hopefully have a rpi4 again!

We are receiving a grazing blow of a double CME. I am seeing some
interesting “dead zones” by using the Half Moon Bay SDR. Some areas
simply loose skip into some areas. This makes sense as some parts of
our ionosphere will by zapped by the CME, causing a brief but highly
charged D layer below it, thus blocking signals from skipping off the
E or F layers. Signals one would ordinarily hear disappear yet other
signals are normal.

Oh, very odd! While NCS was receiving RELAY check-ins, someone just
sent an ORCA image received via the SDR!

Doug’s final TxID reminds me of a bad case of hiccups! I hope you
get over them soon! :) Config, IDs, Rsid, bottom right, untick the
checkbox End of xmit ID

Remember, DON’T SAVE your macro tonight when closing FLDigi! :)

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

It appears to be clearing by now can see clouds above, but the wind is still howling. Couldn’t hear a thing from

ORCA < AE6LJ

Very sorry. I did not understand the exercise instruction for tonight at all.

Saw in the Report from last week’s net a request for me to describe my method for using the Mode-VidID so here goes:

———

Configure/Config Dialogue/IDs/Video

In Video ID modes I first cleared all, then selected just the few I thought I might be needing this for: MFSK-64, Thor 50×1, OFDM 500.
(I know there will be times I will forget to turn this off don’t want to look clownish announcing that I am in regular net mode.)

Chars/Row I have set to 5 for my callsign already.

Lastly I check/uncheck Transmit mode ID, Save, Close.

Toggle TxID on or off.

———-

It occurs to me that employing a similar tactic, perhaps without using TXID, could be useful when calling CQ.

FYI, the way my interface is wired up prevents me from being able to hear the signals. Visual cues are all I have. Also, when sending in
my exercise on ORCA nets, I only consider my estimated path TO NCS when determining mode to use, but the idea for the Vid Mode ID
was for the net at large.

Rats! So many station issues lately. And, I forgot to include <TXRSID:on> & <@TXRSID:off> in the NBEMS Macro Exercise. We’ve not
worked with Macros lately & I may be rusting. I spent the weekend installing new Baluns from Balun Designs. Mindy’s antenna went
smoothly and SWR improved for 4 of 5 bands we use most often. I spent 2 days trying to get the Hybrid balun working on my antenna
w/o success. Talking with Bob @ Balun Designs, it’s gratifying to learn something is amiss w/the Balun. I didn’t mess it up, but it really
frustrated me, trying to sort it out. Not everything goes as planned.

Jaye KE6SLS box is unticked. Still ID’s. When ticked, ID’s twice. It’s a fart in the file. The default file is OK.

We have a large & growing wildfire in Curry Co, about 35mi NE of us. Began in a campground, now about 9k acres & uncontained.

No I don’t tghink so it doesn’t seem to be working properly, it wasn’t keying the radio to TX and then hung up on me when I tried to
stop it, guess this week was a bit bust on the exercise! Oh well next week will be better :) BTN de N6FPV k
