While band condx didn’t seem any worse than usual lately, condx were definitely different tonight.  One way propagation is becoming normal, it seems. Our path to Dave K7DV in Idaho Falls,ID has been one way for the last couple months.  Last year, we frequently relayed ID stations to Dave during the ID ERC Net. He could not decode nearby stations. Now, we still copy ID Ops but they can’t copy us. Stations to our north were not copying us tonight either. Charles W5CLE and Randy K7NOJ tried to ck-in from northern Washington, but we didn’t see a hint of their signals; we learned they were trying by email.

Steve KW6M sent ‘QSA1’ (your signal is almost uncopyable) at ck-in; initially, it left me blank. I had two stations stacked for ck-in and I didn’t recognize the Q-Code. I haven’t heard it in years. There are three main signal-quality reporting conventions in use today. A 1-5 scale is standard for Q-Code, RST, and the ITU R rating.

Thanks to Steve for the signal-quality nudge. Others may be interested in path-quality between the Ck-In station and NCS. We’ll expand our Ck-In protocol, making a signal-quality code optional. Please continue sending only what we ask on a single line. It makes building the Roster easier. It also reflects your understanding of net Protocols.

A preliminary report from Wayne K4WK indicates the American Red Cross Communications Exercise was:

1 Overall,  a smashing success!
2 Over a thousand messages were passed
3 Forty-seven states were involved as well as Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and Canada.

ARC is delighted with our participation in the Winlink-only Exercise. Imagine how happy they’ll be when they discover NBEMS.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex196.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic round with FLAMP.

The ARC Communications Exercise last weekend seemed successful from our perspective.
It was a very simple exercise using only Winlink. We are in discussion with our County
Emergency Manager about leading a digital traffic-handling VHF net for local Ops. It
would meet on Wednesday evenings, conflicting with ID ERC Emergency Net. We’ve
always tried to engage local digital Ops w/o much success. It’s an opportunity to
develop a local VHF digital net that links with ORCA & WDN.

We barely managed to get a relay ck-in to the Humboldt County Emergency Net (phone)
yesterday with 100w; Humboldt Co is about 90mi south. 10min later, we checked into
the Humboldt Co Emergency Digital Net w/30w. Two weeks prior, with similar difficulty
on phone, we were able to maintain digital contact w/Jaye KE6SLS/NCS at 2w. Digital’s
ability to punch through terrible band condx is often amazing.

After sending the Roster, we usually ask if anyone need it resent. No one has needed
the Roster resent, so we’ll drop this query and save a bit of time. Print your VidID
at 2000wf if you need the Roster resent.

Thanks for emailing the original Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com
