Band condx were not great tonight, but improved as evening approached. We welcomed three new stations tonight. Ken KR7KR and Linda KG7PBX in&out from Cedar City,UT and Dave K7DV checked in from Idaho Falls,ID just after closing. Dave is a member of the Idaho ERC Digital Net. I’ve visited them a couple times. Drop in and say hello from ORCA. They meet every Wed at 1815p 3.581 1500. NCS is Bliss W7RUG. Visiting digital nets helps spread good ideas and solutions among the digital Amateur community.

We’re doing well with the weekly FLAMP practice routine. Mindy W7ZAP is leading this practice in August. If you would like to try it next month, let me know. It’s easy to do and will increase your digital skills and confidence. I’m looking for ways to enable others to participate in NCS routines like check-in and traffic/comment rounds. Any one of us may be called to NCS a digital net some day. It would be good to have had some practice.

Brad WA7HHE passed traffic in MFSK-64 tonight. We should do more mode experimenting. We also learn when a mode doesn’t perform well. Experimenting with modes will enable us to pick the best mode for current condx more efficiently. Remember to return to MFSK-32 for fills and net business.

Today is Steve KB6HOH’s Birthday. Happy Birthday, Steve! We learned from Rick N6IET that Steve K6WSJ is recovering nicely and may be back soon. Steve lives in Venice,CA. And, what’s up in UT? Certainly lots of interest in digital ops and experienced digital operators. It’s great to have them aboard.

Ralph WB6SDR is working out some issues with his Raspberry Pi2/fldigi/flmsg/flamp station. A fully functional digital station on a tiny $35 computer is quite an accomplishment, when you think about it. I’d like to give it a go myself. I’m archiving Ralph’s files and comments on this project. Maybe a good rainy winter project.

Thanks to Ralph and Steve K6ETA for relaying FLAMP fills for Mindy W7ZAP. Our weekly FLAMP message is a great opportunity for the sender to determine if another net station would be better copied by those needing fills. For emergency communications, when traffic needs to pass between stations that don’t hear each other well, NCS would send along a RELAY station to help them complete the transfer.

Once again, don’t fret about mistakes. We all make mistakes occasionally. We’re here to learn and practice in a supportive atmosphere. Let’s have as much fun as we can in the process. Band condx can be stressful enough sometimes. I know how frustrating it is when you can’t copy NCS well enough to know what’s next, or where we are in rotation.

We would like to begin holding occasional daytime nets. They will be very brief; just enough time to check-in and evaluate band condx. We don’t need the whole membership; a few scattered stations will do nicely. We want to be confident and operational at any hour. Let me know if you can meet occasionally during the day and what days/times would be best for you. And, comments and suggestions are always welcome.

Monitors…. After monitoring the net a few times, check-in and give it a go. Traffic is not necessary. You can send QRU in the Traffic round. When the net is busy, it’s good to have a few QRU’s. It keeps the net from running too long.  Check out: http://orcadigitalnet.com/quick-start/

Mindy & I appreciate all your kind comments and we really enjoy working with each of you. Without you, there would be no net and we wouldn’t be learning digital NCS. Thanks for coming prepared and working as a team. It’s deeply satisfying. I hope to see you all again next Tuesday. 73 Doug K7KY

ORCA Announcements 016/aug/16

NEW! for the weekly FLAMP practice traffic that precedes the

regular Traffic round. A net member will conduct this activity

for NCS. It will provide experience withFLAMP/REPORT/RELAY

and digital NCS tasks. Mindy W7ZAP will lead today’s practice.

In an emergency, the first Ops on freq will establish the net.

It would be helpful to already have some experience with basic

NCS duties. We can learn and practice these skills in modules,

so we don’t have to learn the whole process at once.

We could be asked to establish a daytime digital net. We want

to experiment with daytime frequencies and modes. If you can

meet for a brief daytime net (10-15min), let me know what

day/time will work for you. I’ll pick the most common time/date.

Please hold Keyboard dialog for Comment Round. Questions and

topical comments anytime.

If you need to leave early, please check-out with NCS. < K7KY

Second day back to work. Still alive and kickin’ but dog tired and sore.

Humboldt Chili:

Chili cookin’ tonight. 1# ground beef, local if you got it. Two largish onions, maybe one white, one red. Cut these in half, take half of each

and dice up largish and add to the ground beef cookin’ in the skillet with cover. Add some spice, black pepper, sea salt, garlic (made local

and yummy!). Use a half large garlic and mince it up and add to beef/onions cookin’ away. Prep 2 small cans of tomato paste; prep a few

tomato into chunks. Mince a jalapeño and add it to your beef before it’s completely cooked. Once beef is done, add to large kettle!

cut up a few carrots and add to the pot.

Add the tomato paste.

Add the tomatos.

add a few cans water

add chili seasonings

stir baby stir!

add the other chopped onions

add a potato chopped

add a chopped zucchini!

add a chopped red bell pepper

add a chopped orange bell pepper

add a can of kidney beens

chop a green bell pepper

chop a yellow bell pepper

add a small can of sliced mushrooms

add teaspoon of Tabasco sauce

add a teaspoon or two of Humboldt Habinoro sauce!

Let this cook for a bit, say 10 minutes good boil, keep covered.

Now add the last of your bell peppers. Taste, need a bit more

hot sauce?

Now let this whole thing simmer for 15 minutes.

turn off heat, remove cover, let cool. Makes a lot of bowls

of very good to eat, and good for your body Humboldt Chili!

“Humboldt Chili, it’s whats for dinner” :)

ENJOY!

Welcome to Ken KR7KR and Linda KG7PBX, both from Cedar City… hotbed of digital comms! Band condx not so good tonight. Lost one of

our wire antennas today that is on our neighbor’s property. His excavator took it out. We use this ant on our hilltop and hope we can get it

back up in the air soon.

W7ZAP Tnx Mindy, nice report… BREAK That’s it for Traffic & Comments tonight… Welcome to the new stations in UT. I’m beginning to

wonder if UT should be the leading state in NBEMS instead of PA… Great to have all the UT stations working with us…. Thanks to

everyone for paying attention the FLAMP traffic practice is going very smoothly… I think most of the Ops on this net would do quite well in emergency communications… BREAK

Hi Doug de wa7hhe, thanks to you and Mindy for all the work your putting into the net, talking up the net to our local folks trying to get them

to make the jump from VHF to HF. Hopefully we all will have more time to check in as Winter gets closer.

73’s Brad

WA7HHE Tnx Brad uv done a good job stiring up Ops for the net… and, they]ve done a good job on the net… I look forward to having

the monitoring stations work with us on-air soon… we likely have more monitors than we would guess… it’s a good idea to monitor this net

before joining… there are a few more details than most digital nets..

Remember, we want to try a few daytime frequencies and modes so we’ll be able to start and operate a digital net at any hour… let me

know when you could do some brief testing during the day… tell me day and time possible for you and I’ll try to accomodate as many as I can… OK last call for comments before we close… < K7KY
