The OFDM vs PSK-R Mode Shoot-Out was interesting and surprising. Three UT stations CONFIRMED the first transmission in OFDM-750F: Gene W1EEP, Brad WA7HHE, and Dennis W6DLW in Cedar City,UT. Ken KR7KR, also in Cedar City, CONFIRMED the first pass in OFDM-500R. Dennis also CONFIRMED the first pass in PSK-250RC5. He’s the only station to CONFIRM both fast modes (OFDM-750R/PSK-250RC5) in a single pass. Looking at tonight’s test images, you can see how widely propagation differed by location. Bruce KB7VX/P, portable in West Plains,MO, was unable to decode OFDM and PSK-R. Although he didn’t Report MFSK-32 CONFIRMED, he had completed the Advanced Exercise by Traffic Round. Bruce is our most distant station tonight. His new 55′ mast has further improved his portable signal.

Including a Mode Shoot-Out with the NBEMS Exercise was more complicated than we anticipated. When OFDM needed fewer fills overall, we asked you to Fill file A. We should have said, ‘Fill the file that needs the least blocks’. Only six Ops actually worked the Exercise, we didn’t hear from two. We may find the OFDM modes our first choice for large files when band condx are favorable.

In spite of the extended NBEMS Exercise, we wrapped the net in 1hr/3min. Excellent work all around. Thanks for your part in presenting a weekly model of efficient digital-net operations. Working with you is an honor. Your participation is more helpful than you may guess; we often hear from monitoring and lurking stations that never ck-in. They’re learning while we practice.

Before the net, we copied Ken KR7KR and Brad WA7HHE working with the Path Evaluation macros. It’s the first time we’ve copied our test image from the field. We look forward to experimenting with this macro during nets.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

If you found last week’s NBEMS Exercise confusing, you weren’t alone. The instructions were incomplete. They didn’t identify ‘where’ to copy in the RX buffer. Our proof-readers muffed this one. Thanks for your patience.

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise includes a Mode Shoot-Out comparing OFDM to PSK-R modes of similar word-speed. Next month, we’ll run another OFDM Shoot-Out with PSK-R modes of similar bandwidth. OFDM and PSK modes are most suitable for VHF operations, but they can move HF traffic very quickly when band condx are favorable. Experimenting with different modes helps develop a working knowledge of many modes, enabling us to more quickly match mode to condx when transmission time is critical.

Mode Shoot-Out:
OFDM-500F, 480wpm, & OFDM-750F, 1000+wpm*, file = ex233A.txt
vs
PSK-500R, 440wpm, & PSK-250RC5, 1100wpm, file = ex233B.txt

Again, we’ll use two identical files with different names and Fill the best performing mode with MFSK-32.
* OFDM word-speeds are estimates.

More than a dozen stations have the Path Evaluation Macro working. We’ll soon be ready to give it a spin during nets. Let us know when you have it working or you need assistance: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

First round my FLAMP / FLDIGI dropped/locked. Macro’s were Jacked up too. It was a mess. It didn’t get much better from there. Should have done a reboot before net. lesson learned. In spite of all that, I could see OFDM was not a strong mode here for my somewhat compromise station. Not much decoded, but the WF was sort of cool.

Was able to finish strong with that essential MFSK Fill. Thanks so much for the net and opportunity to practice. Stay dry and healthy …. 73 to all. Mike

Enjoying a CERT training overview on ZOOM as well as ORCA digital net.

It absolutely amazes me how robust and effective MFSK32 is in very poor condx! I am also very pleased with my 210′ doublet. Before I had this antenna, I wouldn’t have been able to copy ANY of NCS. Praise to simple and bullet proof antennas!

Made a HUGE pot of stew. Tons of fresh veggies and used a chuck steak for the meat that I BBQ’d. Feeling much better now Great to hear Bruce, kb7vx. I don’t even recall what timezone he’s in!

Thanks for your patience with combining a Shoot-Out w/NBEMS Exercise. It make the Exercise more complicated to run and to work. We’ll try it once more and see if it just need a little practice. OFDM was surprising; I didn’t think it would do so well. The 500hz mode could be very useful if FCC restricts us to 500hz.

Hats-Off to Bruce KB7VX/P. He’s booming in here right now @ S9 1db from MO. Bruce really has a grip on field antennas.
