Overall, band condx were better tonight. Nearby stations are still having difficulty. Jaye KE6SLS in Eureka,CA, about 100mi south, was checked in by relay, but couldn’t copy NCS until the band strengthened for the Comment round. The distant stations in UT & ID were strong. Again, the distant stations are a large part of the net. We didn’t pass traffic off-net-freq as planned. Making it a regular monthly exercise may be too ambitious. ORCA is already complex. This exercise goes on the shelf for now. You are welcome to initiate an off-freq traffic event if you like. For now, we’ll keep to our usual net outline.

Welcome to Eric KG7UNI in Kanab,UT. And, welcome back to Walt K6VHG. Walt is our neighbor and Pelican Bay ARC VP. I hope the band will relax a bit and allow nearby stations to connect. The past two months have been difficult for stations close to NCS. For some, it’s been impossible. Unfortunately, these condx are not unusual at the bottom of the solar cycle. Despite poor condx, Cliford N0LKC/P is working the net portable with 15w and a clever field antenna. Clifford’s at Quartzsite now and we’ve given him a list of our friends to look out for (-:

Here’s an indication of band condx:
HF Forecast for 16JAN18
80m: FAIR / Geomag: VERY QUIET
Solar flux: 71 / Sunspots: 13 / A-index: 4 / K-index: 1

The net went quickly tonight. Wrapped in an hour, six minutes. Not one double either. It gives me a sense of being on a well seasoned team. A team that has practiced and polished it routines and tactics. It’s surprising how well we work together, although many of us wouldn’t recognize each other by sight. This sense of teamwork is satisifying. While our membership changes over time, we have a core of Ops that practice nearly every week. This is the substance of ORCA.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 16 January 2018

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex53.txt’, an FLMSG
/FLAMP exercise using the FLMSG ICS-213 form. Complete the instructions
and send the file to NCS during TRAFFIC round using FLAMP, or send
your own practice traffic or QRU.

Clifford N0LKC/P and I had another digital QSO on 1.835 last night.
We worked about 30min, Clifford @ 15w & campground antenna, me @ 5w. He
wondered if ORCA might do better on 160m. Our last two 160m QSOs would
tend to encourage this thought. Still, few Ops have 160m antennas.
Maybe we could have a roundtable on 160m if there’s enough interest.
Clifford’s camp antenna will intrigue and maybe baffle you. It’s 35′ tall,
incorporates 4 coils(three tunable), has a 30′ footprint, and uses his
trailer for ground. It has a surprising 160m signal @ 15w. These two QSO
were his first Top Band digital foray.

If you hear a check-in NCS doesn’t copy, send ‘RELAY’. NCS: ‘RELAY?’
U: ‘RELAY W1AW W1AW < URcall’. NCS: tell W1AW they r in&out, tu’.
U: W1AW ur checked in&out (monitor) < URcall’.

Digital shorthand for RELAY:
“RELAY <callsign> <callsign> < <URcall>”.

Doug K7KY and I had another great round on 160m last night as he mentioned – I am new to that band and have a strong interest in emergency communications with 160m & 80m should the need arise. Have had no outside AC plug in here for a good month now. Rather amazing results taking place twice now between OR and AZ on low power. No sun today so I have dropped from my usual 15W

ORCA welcomes KG7UNI Eric in Kanab, UT and a welcome back to K6VHG Walt from Brookings, OR. Amazing difference in band condx compared to last week… much better tonight. Glad to RX pics because they really show how good the band is. Ooops! I’m incorrect about band condx because we cannot copy close-by (60-100mi) stations (KC7CL and KE6SLS) and maybe others. I was pleased to see how well MFSK-64 (240wpm) was copied during the FLAMP exercise. Great to see all on the WF and hope to work with you again soon.
