Band condx were better than usual tonight. Long and short propagation was relatively even. We logged four new stations too. All from afar. ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes: Peter N0STP in St Paul,MN, Ron K7UV in Bringham City,UT, Neil W0NRP in Lee’s Summit,MO, and Christian KD9MKZ in Cambridge City,IN… and Welcome Back to Rex WB8TDG in Dayton, OH.

It’s good we extended Early Ck-In to 45min; the extra time was important tonight. We logged 31 stations, with only 3 working the FLAMP Exercise. When the Exercise began, only 2 participants replied. It’s an unusual ORCA ratio, 3Active/31QNX. It left the Exercise a little light in terms of a teaching experience. When the Exercise is full, we usually have a station or two that require additional fill rounds. This creates an opportunity for participants to Relay fill blocks for other net stations, increasing our use and demonstration of tactics and tools. Observing our weekly FLAMP Exercise is how newer digital Ops learn enough to participate w/o undue stress.

Thanks for considering the IARU band plan that eliminates digital modes over 500hz on 3.581khz. We’ve already received some email. Thinking our associate nets would likely move too, we thought it possible we might all move together, better anchoring a digital-net frequency. Remaining on 3.581 is certainly an option for some digital nets. The MFSK modes include Forward Error Correction (FEC). MFSK-22 would be a good choice for remaining on 3.581. It’s 2/3rds the speed and BW of MFSK-32.
MFSK-22= 80WPM, 435BW
MFSK-32= 120WPM, 630BW
OLIVIA/4/500= 40WPM, 500BW

Numerous digital nets use only OLIVIA modes. It’s robust and reliable in difficult HF condx, but also very slow. It’s unsuitable for ORCA’s training agenda. We may be among the few nets using numerous wide modes every session. Evaluating different modes is part and parcel of the weekly FLAMP Exercise and important for learning mode characteristics. Familiarity with HF digital modes is best learned during practice sessions, rather then when speed and efficiency is critical.

While it would be optimum to have all four digital nets move together, it may not be in their best interest. Remaining on 3.581 is the least disruptive option and some may not be hindered by adopting a net-mode with <500BW. We’re thinking ORCA qualifies to work, 3,681. This changes only one numeral in our home-freq and would be easy to remember. We’ve not done any research at this frequency yet, but we’ll begin looking there and elsewhere. As always, your thoughts and comments are important and welcome.

Here’s a caveat for interpreting tonight’s Signal Evaluation Images. Doug K7KY’s Net-Close macro failed and Mindy W7ZAP sent the closing image. Opening image was from Doug’s antenna and the closing image from Mindy’s antenna. Normally, both images are sent from Doug’s antenna.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex207.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP exercise.
If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic round
with FLAMP.

Have you read the ‘IARU-Region 2 Band Plan’?. If not, please give it a scan:

https://www.iaru.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/IARU-Region-2-Band-plan.pdf

At first read, it seemed we would have to move to the 25khz between 3600-3625khz where
they’ve grouped ACDS and DSB Phone. ACDS includes Winlink Gateways. They’ve made an exception
for DBS Phone, granting them 6khz signals. 25khz would accommodate 4 DSB Phone simultaneous
QSOs. This doesn’t sound like good neighbors for ORCA DIGITAL NET. Further consideration
lead us to think we qualify to use any new sector labeled ‘2700hz’ and ‘ALL MODES’.

It does appear we cannot hold nets on 3.581 using MFSK-32 (630hz) and wider modes when ARRL
adopts the IARU plan. If we must move, moving sooner than later may enable us to find and
establish a net frequency with reasonable neighbors.

Last week, we emailed five digital NCS and three SATERN Net Relay stations asking their opinion.
Only 3 stations replied. The NCS Ops seemed disinclined to relocate. Maybe we’re overreacting or
misreading the plan. It seems certain ARRL will adopt the plan; it looks just like the ARRL proposal.
When adopted, we will have to move or restrict our modes to less than 500hz. This would slow net
operations and eliminate mode experimenting in the weekly FLAMP Exercise; not a good option for ORCA.

Currently, we have digital nets on 3.581 four evenings per week and 3.581 has become known as
a digital watering-hole. We thought it would benefit all four nets to move to the same frequency
and re-establish a digital watering hole. Working together would help us establish a common
frequency more quickly. We may have assumed too much here; net managers may have different
circumstances to consider. We’re trying to maintain the usefulness of OUR training curriculum.
Restricting ORCA DIGITAL NET to sub-500hz modes would significantly impinge on the depth and
breadth of our training curriculum.

Currently, we’re the only major digital HF training net experimenting widely with modes. Knowledge
and experience with numerous modes helps make digital Ops mode-savy and mode-agile. Most digital
nets use 1 or 2 modes. We use 3 or 4 modes every session, nearly all over 500hz. In emergencies we
won’t be hobbled by band plans; we’ll use the most appropriate mode for condx in order to process
large files efficiently.

Please examine the IARU Region 2 document and let us know your thoughts and suggestions. It appears
we will have to move, but it appears we have more options than the 25khz filled with Gateways, other
ACDS signals, beacons, and DSB Phone @ 6hhz. 3.681 may be a good address for ORCA DIGITAL NET.

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com They make
Net Reports more useful. (another file location & manipulation exercise)

n March of last year, thousands of companies and U.S. government agencies were sent a routine software update. This happened
regularly with SolarWinds Orion software. There was no reason to suspect anything was wrong with the update.

What they couldn’t see at the time was a malicious piece of code buried deep within the update, a Trojan horse planted by Russian
cyber soldiers looking for a backdoor to important American computer networks.

[WRAP:beg][WRAP:crlf][WRAP:fn 20210216.txt] The weather continues cold here in Gallup, NM, elevation 7000 feet here at Rehoboth McKinley Hospital and it has been snowing
daily since Saturday the 13th, with more snow predicted for tonight. Last night was down into the teens and snowing lightly most
of the day. This is bad for me, as I am totally out of fresh fruit and I need to wear clothes for more than a day, because I don’t
know when will be the next window of opportunity to drive to the laundromat. Roads are slick and treacherous. Even walking to
work this morning, I almost slipped and fell.

Mass vaccinations have ramped up here with the UNM hosting drive by vaccinations and their gymnasium is open for walk-ins.
The Navajo Nation is also making vaccinations available througout the Reservation.
