We had a bit of everything tonight; up/down band, relays for check-in, challenging FLAMP exercise, stations checking out due to poor band conditions, late stations, and a large file transmission following the net. All great training for digital Ops. Thanks to Bill K6QOG for relaying 3 stations at check-in. Apologies to Darrell W6ADZ for logging him active when he checked in&out… and kudos for making dinner AND staying active with the net!  We had 3 stations change their status from ‘active’ to ‘in&out’ when the band degenerated. This was great practice for NCS and the net, updating the roster, keeping everyone current. We appreciate you checking out when you need to leave; we won’t spend practice time looking for you.

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise Doug K7KY sent the file in THOR-100 (352wpm,1800hz) with two stations CONFIRMED. The 2nd pass he used PSK-250R (220wpm,250hz) two more stations CONFIRMED. MFSK-64/32 filled the remaining stations. It’s always interesting to see which modes do well in challenging conditions. Some fast modes still perform well in poor band conditions. Doug used wide (1800hz) and narrow (250hz) modes with good results.

Test images copied from tonight’s net tell the tale for band conditions in different regions:

RX: W1EEP UT
RX: KE6SLS CA

Following the net Doug K7KY sent a file outlining Ken Standard AD7XJ’s (SATERN NCS) suggestion for  additional NBEMS features. Here’s a portion of that file:

Ken Standard AD5XJ’s suggested addition to NBEMS suite…

From time to time it would be nice to have the ability to put FLAMP into what I call “postoffice mode”.  It would operate something like this: A single station would be the “postmaster” with FLAMP in this mode. It may operate attended or unattended. Any station with a need to send messages to the “postmaster” for all stations or to a single station can put their FLAMP in the same mode and indicate if the destination is another station or for “postmaster” to broadcast to all stations. FLAMP in “postmaster” mode would save the message sent in a special folder and periodically check for messages. If messages are in the send-all folder, they should be broadcast at the pre-configured interval until removed. If any in the send-one folder then sent to the recipient when that station is acknowledged or forwarded to destination if Internet bound. The prerequisite is that all stations would have to be on the version of FLAMP that supports it and know to put FLAMP in “postal” mode to function that way and a “postmaster” would need Internet access to be most effective.

The justification for this feature is to allow ad-hoc operation of a group of stations that can pass messages peer-to-peer in any mode of choosing and provide localized message store and forward over the wide area where WinLINK or PACKET is not accessible. This is sort of like PSKMail but within the FLDIGI/NBEMS software suite and in a limited user group.

There are a number of conceptual questions yet to be answered but I think this could be useful to groups like ARES and SATERN. I think it is worthy of discussion within this group. Or you can email me directly with questions.

Read Ken AD5XJ’s entire post and replies (including Dave W1HKJ,  FLDIGI Developer) online at: https://groups.io/g/nbems/topic/flamp_new_feature_idea/30523667?p=,,,20,0,0,0::recentpostdate%2Fsticky,,,20,0,0,30523667

FYI: There are 2 newsgroups where the FLDIGI programmers & users post questions and/or ideas:
nbems@groups.io: https://groups.io/g/nbems
winfldigi@groups.io: https://groups.io/g/winfldigi

We appreciate all stations who take the time to check-in, active or in&out. It’s the member stations that create an effective learning experience for incoming Ops. We hope to see you again next Tuesday evening.

73,
Mindy W7ZAP

ANNOUNCEMENTS 16/April/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file ‘ex114.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file
to NCS in the Traffic round tonight or any net.

This exercise simulates receiving a keyboard report intended for Incident
Command. You need to put this report into an FLMSG form. To accomplish this,
you will scroll up in the RX buffer to the ‘Announcements’, copy some text,
and paste it into an FLMSG form. We’ll leave a little extra time b4 Traffic.

Ken Standard AD5XJ, NCS @ Int’l SATERN Digital Net, suggests a ‘post-office
or store>forward’ addition to the NBEMS suite. His idea has sufficient merit
to engage the interest of FLDIGI developer, Dave Freese W1HKJ. Following the
net, we’ll send a file outlining his proposal. Don’t forget the SATERN net,
Saturday,1000pdt,14.065mhz. Ken usually begins early ck-in around 0900pdt.

I copied NCS 100% and the FLAmp made it on the first try. However when NCS called me for the first report, NCS must have faded, because I never got the call, just garble. I like the faster/wider modes! Still using this little bar of soap that people call a Raspberry Pi as a main computer in the shack — and I’m pleased to say it’s as good as a desktop machine!

I applaud the idea of store/forward on FLDigi! Our RACES group uses it on JS8Call and it is VERY useful!

New capabilities well-implemented make me happy! =)

Tnx Mindy… a couple thoughts the band is actually aiding us in learning about modes.. if the band was great, we’d not learn so much so quickly… tonite is a good example of why we resend the roster when active stations change tonite we had lots of late ins and some early outs we resend to keep u up to speed with whats happening… FLAMP will always compress files when they reach a certain size when this happens the file is binary it cannot be read in the FLDIGI RX buffer but can be read in the FLAMP Data window… in keeping with our new policy of keeping practice traffic brief we send longer files after the net tonite I’ll send a 5min file explaining Ken AD5XJ’s proposal for NBEMS addition tnx Mindy btn < K7KY

Thanks Doug… lots of good thoughts in ur comments.
