Last night’s net was a bit unusual with mistakes and doubles. The band favored most stations last night, but some drop-outs occurred making difficult copy for some. I made a couple minor errors at the beginning of the net, then the FLAMP round had a couple of glitches. During the REPORT round two stations replied with TRAFFIC instead of a report. These things happen. It’s really remarkable how well we usually work together.

The TRAFFIC round had a great response to the weekly FLAMP exercise with 6 out of 7 receiving stations responding.

Do you use balanced feedline(300,450,600ohm) or coax for HF wire ants?

5 stations use coax and 2 stations use balanced feedlines.
(Jaye KE6SLS uses 450 ohm feedline for TX & coax + filter for RX)

Doug KA7FOO won’t be participating with us for the next couple of weeks; he’s teaching classes at his Regional EOC Station KR7EOC. He hopes to to check in&out in-between classes.

A picture is worth 1,000 words… check out the ORCA test images Ops received. Howard KB6NN emailed a screen capture of his test image, copied on his dummy load at a distance of 100 miles! Howard explained he tuned up his 100W Kenwood rig, then switched to his 5W Yaesu 817, placing his Kenwood on the dummy load. Kenwood-Dummy also copied Doug K7KY@ 5W, local station Jaye KE6SLS, with some light copy on other stations. Nice receiver Howard!

RX: W1EEP UT RX: KE6SLS CA RX: KB6NN CA
(Dummy Load)

Thanks for practicing with us. I enjoy working with you all. Have a great week and hope to see you on the WF soon.

Mindy W7ZAP

ANNOUNCEMENTS 15 August 2017

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex36.txt’, an
FLMSG/FLAMP exercise using the BLANK form. Complete the exercise
instructions and send the file to NCS during TRAFFIC using FLAMP,
or send your own practice traffic, or QRU.

The FLAMP exercises provide experience in parsing instructions on-the
-fly and working within your PC file system while engaged in net
activities.

Exercise instructions direct u to change ‘QST’ to ‘NCS’ on the FLAMP
TX tab. This tells the net the msg is to NCS and they don’t need to
complete the message as they would a msg addressed to, ‘ORCA DIGITAL
NET’. Only NCS will REPORT & fill a msg to ‘NCS’.

Last week, lightning caused some to miss mode change during the weekly
FLAMP exercise. We’ll try sending mode change IDs twice. This is done
easily with the macro tag . Check it out.

If you change mode for your traffic, remember to activate TxID so all
stations follow automatically.

Net Report posted as soon as we can…

:mg:678 Severed lines snuffed out power to the command center directing the emergency response to the deadly Gatlinburg wildfires the night of Nov. 28 and plunged firefighting and rescue efforts into darkness and chaos.

High winds and roaring flames about 8:30 p.m. disabled cell towers, melted fiber-optic cables, disrupted digital radio signals and shut down phone lines. Backup systems and protocols failed. With more than 1,000 radios on Sevier County’s 10-channel Kenwood emergency radio system, police, fire and rescue messages choked the system with a flood of traffic.
