While the band wasn’t terrible, it was also not great and deteriorated some as the net progressed. As the band lengthens, I lose the more proximate stations. Three stations we haven’t seen lately were back from Cedar City, UT.  Linda KG7PBX and George AL7BX tonight.  Ken KR7KR has been back the last two weeks. Does anyone in Cedar City not have an Amateur Radio license?  Unlicensed residents are probably SWL (-:   I visualize antennas at nearly every house in CC,UT.

Some of our nearest regular Ops are in Eureka, CA, about 100mi south. Jaye KE6SLS lives in Eureka. Eureka area Ops have been with us since nearly the beginning of ORCA. Another Eureka Op, Don WA6NBG, joined our first VHF nets. He’s one of the HF net founders. A ‘Plank Owner’ if you don’t mind a little Navel terminology. Don’s digital rig is currently on the blink.

Anyway, I usually hear Jaye well at check-in, but our path fades as the band lengthens. We overcome these limitations with relays. Although we have strong west coast stations with solid signals, relays from UT are the most widely copied along the coast. Two stations stand out in my mind for relays during poor condx: Brad WA7HHE and Dave K7KV. Dave recently did a great job as ORCA NCS/alt while Mindy & I were ill. I haven’t yet reviewed the logs, but I think he was copied well both weeks by most stations.

Completing the weekly FLAMP practice message to all stations give everyone hands-on practice with the TX, RX, REPORT, and RELAY features in FLAMP. This app is at the heart of fast, accurate, and reliable data transfer. The weekly FLAMP exercise is also a great net-module for learning NCS skills. Mindy W7ZAP is the current volunteer conducting the weekly FLAMP exercise. You are welcome to give it a go next if you like. We hope to help anyone interested in digital NCS skills to begin by conducting small portions of ORCA, one by one until they can conduct the whole net. I think it will make an easy entry to digital NCS and spread valuable skills across the digital Amateur community.

I work other digital nets when I can. It keeps me in touch with your experience here. Too much idle time invites the mind to wander. Sometimes, even the feet get restless. It’s important to keep digital nets flowing. They are a bit harder to manage than voice nets. I find them more similar to CW nets. If you aren’t paying attention on CW nets, you can easily lose focus and your place in the net.  You have to track the net yourself  with pencil or keyboard.  A digital NCS can easily overlook  long idle times endured by member stations. NCS is usually fully occupied.  I’m always busy and close to the limits of my attention. Working digital nets as a member helps me keep net-flow and personal idle time in mind on Tues evening.

The small changes to Traffic Round have worked well so far. We’ll continue with them and evaluate them as we go.

With ten stations and more aboard every week we’ve limited the Traffic round to one message per station. The messages you’re sending are excellent. One per station in Traffic round is all we have time for these days. Most of our messages are interesting and reflect the focus and activities of our members. I think everyone enjoys them. I certainly do.  The only change here is:  One (1) message per Op in Traffic Round.

The other change in Traffic Round pertains only to FLAMP traffic. No change to FLMSG traffic. We’ve droped the REPORT roundtable for each FLAMP message. I will REPORT to the FLAMP sender and find a RELAY among the members when needed. This will help insure everyone has a chance to practice with all the FLDIGI features every week. You may or may not complete each FLAMP message. I’ll post a list of FLAMP sending stations at net-end. You can contact them after net to fill missing blocks. This seems to be working OK so far. We’ll keep an eye on the process and see if it works well for everyone. Balancing between practice opportunities and net-length is challenging. Some messages are worth saving. Ralph WA6SDR occasionally sends message that chronicle the construction and configuration of his Raspberry Pi/Linux digital station. I always complete and archive these messages. Brad WA7HHE often sends condensed messages with a URL link to the complete article. An efficient use of time and bandwidth. Most member will be happy to stay a few minutes to fill their message.

Howard KB6NN monitored the net while attending an ARC meeting.  Here’s the signal evaluation image he copied:

ORCA Announcements 07/feb/17

Tonight’s weekly FLAMP is a simple file; no file-manipulation needed.

Every station sends a REPORT. We’ll try to fill every station. Some

stations may be asked to RELAY fill blocks.

The routine for FLAMP msgs in Traffic round is changing. Completing

FLAMP traffic using REPORT & RELAY is very important for complete

traffic handling skills. We don’t want to limit it any more than is

necessary to keep net length reasonable. We’ll continue with Mindy

(or another volunteer) calling each station in rotation for REPORTS.

For FLAMP msgs in the Traffic round, I’ll give the sender my REPORT.

If I need a RELAY; I may ask you. Then, on to the next station.

No more roundtable of FLAMP traffic REPORTS in Traffic round unless

net is small. This will save a lot of time. Stations wanting to fill

an FLAMP msg can stay on freq after closing. Before closing, I’ll send

an in-order list of Ops sending in FLAMP. Please call them in the order

listed to minimize doubles.

We tried this last week and it worked well. We had only two Ops send

FLAMP traffic that I needed filled. I listed their calls to the net and

asked the you to contact them in the order listed following postamble. It

actually worked the first time. We had only two Ops sending FLAMP traffic

with outstanding blocks. There were no doubles. We included some of the

after-net activity in the 31/jan/17 Net Log. Check it out on the website.
