31 Ck-Ins tonight. Thanks for an efficient ck-in. We were still tweaking net-content at 1850p when we usually start Early Ck-In. The band was much better than usual tonight. We had good path to all regions except Washington. See the test images below. The FLAMP Exercise reached the maximum ten Active stations. Although PSK modes are not ideal for HF, PSK63-RC4 CONFIRMED four stations on the first pass, THOR-50×1 CONFIRMED five on the 2nd pass, and MFSK-32 supplied one block to CONFIRM the last station.
ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Jerry K6KSI in Ashland,OR. We’re always happy to see new stations, especially Oregon stations. For our first few years, we were the only Oregon stations on ORCA. Welcome back to Aaron AG7GK in Mesa,AZ. Aaron is also a digital training-net NCS. There are a number of digital NCS Ops on ORCA; more than you might guess.
We made a small change to the Monitor’s session at net-end. We’re closing the net after Comments by Active stations. This wraps the formal net and releases everyone. Net sessions are long enough, especially when the Roster is large. 1.5hr is a long time to stay focused and engaged. It’s good practice for emergencies when we might work very long shifts. We’re all busy these days and time is precious.
It appears the Monitor’s session at net-end will be useful. We CONFIRMED Optional Exercise files and sent Fills in both session. Now, Monitoring/Visiting stations can complete the FLAMP Exercise with NCS. Following the Monitor’s session, Steve K6ETA suggested we turn this net event over to volunteers. A capital idea. We’re already busy and would really love to have ORCA Ops run this special net-end session as NCS. It’s not difficult; it’s engaging and enjoyable. To do this, you need to have good copy on most of the net stations. Monitor’s will be sending their Optional Exercise file to be CONFIRMED or seeking fill blocks for the basic Exercise file. You could re-run the FLAMP Exercise if you like. Give it some thought. We’ll set you up to succeed and enjoy yourself.

A Coast2Coast Relay Exercise is in the works. Steve K6ETA will host this Exercise at Western Digital Net. We may be able to complete this exercise during a net session. We’ll need ORCA members in mid-USA to make this work. These are the Operators that relayed the SATERN Exercise to the Eastern stations. We’ll need Joe W7LUX in Flagstaff,AZ, Steve W7WSV in Mesa,AZ, Rick K0KEX in Springfield,MO; they were key to relaying SATERN Exercise traffic East. They even managed a few direct connections to the Target station in Buffalo,NY. Gary K7EK in Radcliff,KY will be our Target station.
Thanks for taking the time to email both Signal Evaluation images. This helps generate a useful display of band condx for the Net Report and gives practice manipulating files in the PC/OS.
Thanks for practicing with us again tonight. We really enjoy working with you. Remember Western Digital Net on Thursday, same time and freq as ORCA, Steve K6ETA/NCS. We hope to see you again next Tuesday evening.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex187.txt’, an FLDIGI/PC-EDITOR/FLAMP Exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic round with FLAMP.
Last session, we changed net-format to enable Monitoring stations to CONFIRM the FLAMP Exercise file or submit the OPTIONAL Exercise file. Our first experience went well. We took a couple FLAMP REPORTS and filled one QST. We’ll do it again tonight. Following the Comment Round, we’ll close the net. Then we’ll call for Comments from Monitoring stations. After Comments we’ll CONFIRM FLAMP Exercise files, and send fills for the initial Exercise.
The Monitor’s session after Closing takes advantage of improving band conditions at that hour. This should help the distant stations; we usually hear these stations much better at net-end. We’re taking FLAMP Reports for the FLAMP Exercise and CONFIRMing Optional Exercise files. We’re not re-running the FLAMP Exercise, just completing it for Monitoring stations.
If you worked SATERN Int’l Digital Net on Saturday, you’ve seen Ken AD5XJ’s training bulletin. ARMY MARS has expressed interest in a working relationship with SATERN Digital Net. This is very interesting news. Ken goes on to outline the need for more digital training nets. We agree with Ken. It’s time for Amateur digital Net Control Stations and Operators to begin networking our digital nets. It will help us standardize solid digital-net conventions and protocols and enable us to coordinate training routines and exercises. We seem to be heading for a Social/Political Maximum along with our Solar Minimum. Let’s network our digital nets now; our networks may soon be essential.
Matt WA7WWW is developing a small reception reporting app for ORCA Reception Reports. Check it out @: http://wa7www.com The app also generates a map display. It’s a work in progress; Matt invites your comments and observations.
Please email the Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com for the Net Report. TU!

I’m very relieved to have my club’s first COVID VE Session complete!
Though I’ve been an active VE for years, this was the first session I’ve planned and run. We hosted it outside and eventually licensed 19 new hams/upgrades! Having people take the test in front of their cars, at tray tables with sterilized clipboards, was about 4X harder than a usual session — but it went pretty well and was very COVID-resistant. It almost got cancelled due to smoke, but things cleared up enough that morning, whew!
One Extra candidate scored 50/50, so that speaks to how much time people have to study (plus exams are harder to come by).
Thanks so much everyone for keeping these NBEMS Nets going out West! It wouldn’t be possible without ORCA…

Thanks Steve… and I really like ur club’s approach to testing . Will have to come up w/something different 4 winter! Will be interested in what u come up with

Surprise surprise, KB7VX checked in with me yesterday evening on our Humboldt county digital emergency net! Was hoping to see him on tonight.
Had some sun, but solar panels are coated with ash and couldn’t quite charge the batteries today. They will need to be cleaned. Lots of smoke in the air, and it is very acrid and toxic smelling.
Got up to 79F here today, so did my house, now have the house fan on, trying to cool off the place but the cooler air sure stinks :(
Only missed one FLamp tonight, good work folks!
Have a rouge cat outside, Boots, so I’ve been up several times trying to call him in. . Little bugger, no treats for him!!
Lots of fires around here still. Hope we get some rain.
Stay well all,
73
Jaye ke6sls
Excellent report Jaye. We have a fire 25-30 miles 10% contained. Will burn till winter maybe.
Hope no winds pick up and rain comes soon

Large Roster tonite; we’re really busy @ net-central. Thanks for your attention and focus. You guys are awesome Operators! Some have been with us since the beginning.
They are the essence elements of ORCA training.
ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Jerry K6KSI in ASHLAND,OR. We ask all new Ops to Monitor a few sessions to learn net routines. ORCA is complex and brisk. If you’d like email notice when the weekly Net Report & Log is published, please send your email address to:

Bruce KB7VX will finish his medical work assignment in Victorville,CA this week and should be home in WA middle next week. He’s had quite an experience with auto-repair and will be glad to have life return to something like normal.
Remember our mission is training and practice. We like short files because the permit more traffic handling evolutions in time available. Brief, Clear, and Concise is our watchword. < Doug K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA Hey Doug I think it would be a great thing to have some of the veteran ORCAs take the ‘ater net net’ so u and Mindy can put ur feet up after a VERY VIGOROUS ORCA Net! =) < K6ETA
Before RSID: <<2020-09-16T04:15Z MFSK-32 @ 1500>>
K6ETA < K7KY RR Great idea! you know we’ve tried for some time to get some to just run a bit of the NCS task w/o takers, but this may interest someone… tonight really had us hopping… I don’t think most Ops realize what happens at this end when things switch around in the roster… the roster is central to our organization and when it changes very much mid-net it can slow us up a bit btu < K7KY
K7KY < K6ETA Roger that! Well, I’m sure there are at least 4-6 veteran ops who hang around after net and could fill or answer questions… just sayin. U could put it out there and IF no one jumps in, come back after a cuppa joe… BTU < K6ETA
Before RSID: <<2020-09-16T04:19Z MFSK-32 @ 1500>>
Both good ideas… one thing is we usually have all files 100% and the ability to fill most of the net Ops. Not everyone has complete files, but they can fill what they have and possible search about for a relay station to complete the fill… good practice we’ll certainly give them a chance at this task it’s helpful to their colleagues we’re trying to enable more Ops to practice w/o increasing our work load too much btu < K7KY
K7KY < K6ETA
I count 11 FLAmp files 100% on my screen at present… and I’m sure others have just as many! So even if it was only me sticking around (wink) I could fill quite a ew folks… and I’m sure I’m not alone!
BK
In point of fact, are there anny other veteran ORCAs with more that 5 100% FLAmp files here now? If so, pse chime in! < K6ETA
