Band condx continue to improve. Stations to our East are doing much better these days. Stations that depend on NVIS are doing better, although it’s still marginal. Overall, 80m is improving steadily. Our 210′ Doublet is nearly out-of-service tonight. We have very unusual neighborhood RFI. For 30yrs, we’ve enjoyed very quiet HF reception. S0-1 has been normal. A couple months ago, it jumped to S7-9. Tonight it’s between S20-30. Yikes!

It’s good to see Steve WY7SJM In Wyoming, Cowen N6QDH in New Mexico, Mark KA7ULD in Montana, and Doug VE7WAX in Esquimalt, British Columbia. It’s particularly fortunate to log them tonight; the antenna problem really hindered ck-in. Despite poor antenna performance, we logged 36 stations tonight, 9 of them participated in the Basic NBEMS Exercise.

Next week, the last Tuesday this month, we’ll run an Advanced NBEMS Exercise. It’s the Basic Exercise with an Advanced set of instructions for creating another file. The Advanced Exercise includes a Traffic Round where NCS CONFIRMS Advanced Exercise files. Remember to Fill/CONFIRM the primary file with NCS before working the Advanced Exercise. Maintaining focus on your place in the net and replying to NCS when called is part of the Exercise. Stay focused.

We have more interesting results from our Path Macro experiment. Tom WB7EUX sent his comments and image in one transmission. There’s always a station or two ahead of the instructors. It keeps us humble. Following Tom’s example, we’ll advance our experimenting by sending two items in one transmission. There are numerous ways to do this. Darrell W6DLW suggests typing/pasting comments into the TX screen, then activating the Path Macro. Your Text will follow the image in one transmission.

You can add your comments to the Path Macro after ‘ORCA < <MYCALL>. In this case, the Text will transmit before the image. Another method makes use of the Comment Macro. Remove the <RX> Tag from the Path Macro to leave the transmitter on when the image is complete. Then, activate your Comment Macro. There are more than one way to skin-a-cat with FLDIGI Macros. Experiment to find the method that produces the result you want with the least bother.

Here’s our Path Evaluation Macro results:

rnyone need Roster resent?  < K7KY

That’s good news.   Ck-in was a bit hecftic tonight    34 ck-ins is a larger than average Roster too.
I was falling behind when stations call one right after the other.   sometime, we can’t hear all stations, but NCS needs a few seconds btwn calls…  When I ask u to Stand By  that means pse don’t transmit  I’ m really busy and when u tx  the Buffer I’m trying to copy flows away very frustrating   tnx  BK

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The 1st, 2nd & 3rd Tuesdays are BASIC NBEMS Exercise sessions. Tonight we’ll run the Basic NBEMS Exercise. No Traffic Round. Monitoring (QNX) stations can Fill or CONFIRM the Exercise file in the Monitor’s Session directly after net.

Previously, we asked the Active station to send our test-image with the Path Evaluation Macro that each Op developed and tested personally. It went well and produced interesting results. Each station sent the two images they copied best.

“Top 3 Best-Heard stations:
W6ADZ:  7
KG7VVN: 4
KJ7VGV: 3”    ORCA DIGITAL NET Report 01/Feb/22

We’ll repeat this exercise this evening. We’ll ask the Active stations to send ORCAtest.png with the Path Evaluation Macro in the Comment Round. Send the image followed by your Comments. We’ll ask all stations, Active & QNX, to send the two best copied images to NCS by email. Again tonight, send only the Path Evaluation images. You can email the beginning test image if you like, but no need for the closing image. We do use the opening images some Ops send immediately to evaluate band condx on-the-fly, so those are helpful. When we experiment like this evening, we don’t publish the beginning/end of net images.

Next week, we’ll publish a small change to the Path Evaluation Macro. We want to become comfortable altering our macros on-the-fly. One macro can serve numerous tasks with timely tweaks.

Do you also belong to a VHF/UHF digital net? Consider becoming a ‘Liaison Station’ between your net and ORCA DIGITAL NET and Western Digital Net. At ORCA, you can bring useful Exercises back to your VHF net. At WDN you can pass traffic between WDN and your VHF/UHF Net. This is SOP for Amateur Traffic nets.
