Although the band was predicted to be poor, digital comms again did rather well. Prior to the net, we were unable to check-into the Oregon Emergency Net, 3.980 phone. We couldn’t copy NCS. Background noise was S-8, same as 3.581 tonight. Last month we checked into the Humboldt Emergency Digital Net with 5w. A few minutes later, we needed 80w to just be heard on 3.955, Humboldt Emergency Net(voice).

Interesting how the same band condx makes voice communications difficult and stressful, but easy and relaxed in digital modes. Poor band condx can be frustrating, but these are good conditions for practice. We may be called to work in condx like this or worse.

Mindy W7ZAP conducted the weekly FLAMP exercise in MFSK-32; everyone CONFIRMED it on first TX except me. My FLAMP failed to copy. Later, while receiving FLAMP messages in the Traffic round, Mindy CONFIRMED the traffic for me. Then, after rebooting flamp twice and finally rebooting the PC, I realized I’d had two instances of FLAMP open and neither would copy. An easy, but embarrassing fix. I don’t normally minimize FLAMP during the net and thought it had crashed. NCS tasks keep me busy and I’m sometimes pressing my attention boundaries. Tonight was one of those nights where I occasionally fall a second or so behind net flow. Mindy usually helps me catch up quickly. I’m interested in more practice with off-frequency traffic handling. NCS chores are different than our practice net. I’ll need to log traffic flow besides Ops on/off the net, and hold traffic waiting a receiver. This I’ve only done in emergency voice net exercises in AK, and an actual CA wildfire using VHF packet.

We welcome Darrell W6ADZ to the net.  He lives in Reno,NV like Doug KA7FOO.  He checked in to monitor tonight, but I missed logging him in&out on the roster.  It’s always interesting to see how stations print the test image.  Gene W1EEP in UT, has emailed  29 images.   They make an interesting pattern; terrible to perfect.  Here’s the images copied by Darrell in Reno,NV and Gene in Pine Valley,UT.

We enjoyed working with you tonight and hope to CU again next week. 73 Doug K7KY

ORCA ANNOUNCEMENTS 14 November 2017

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex46.txt’, an FLMSG

/FLAMP exercise using the ICS-213 form. Complete the instructions

and send the file to NCS during TRAFFIC round using FLAMP, or send

your own practice traffic or QRU.

We did well passing traffic off-net-freq and we would like to do

this regularly, maybe once a month. Your thoughts are welcome.

Mindy W7ZAP & I would like to practice logging and tracking traffic

as we would for a traffic or emergency net.

After checking into the NA ID ERC Digital Net with Dave K7DV NCS

last week, he asked me to send the practice FLAMP message. I sent

ex45.txt, our last FLAMP exercise. Dave and Gene W1EEP are already

quite familiar with our ORCA exercises. Others are not, but the

exercise is about handling traffic and not message content. It was

a real treat for me to TX the FLAMP exercise on the ERC net as a

net-member instead of NCS. Thanks for the opportunity, Dave.

TIP: Enabling ‘Mark prev freq/mode’ on Configure/ID/RsID tab will

print a link on the RX screen when mode changes. Clicking this

link will return FLDIGI to the previous mode/freq. Very handy for

one-click return to any previous mode/freq.

Net Report posted as soon as we can…

çr§mments fom Doug

ORCA Logo was receive in very good conditions.

Much better than last week.

Good question posed in the FlAmp. Reminds me that

I should do an update to my macro sets.

Everybodies FlAmp was recieved 100%.

WX sunny all day, nice. But storm coming Thursday.

We need to get some snow so that the ski resorts

can open before Thanksgiving.

But we do not need too much precip this winter

as our lakes are still FULL !!! Flooding can

happen quite easily this year!

Sure do appreciate digital comms over voice during tough band condx. Just prior to ORCA, we check into the Oregon Emergency Net (HF/voice) and could barely hear NCS or anyone else and were unable to ck-in. Didn’t have any problems copying digital ORCA stations tonight. Enjoy working FLDIGI with you guys. Hope to see you on the WF again soon.
