I was relieved we had a light roster tonight due to ARC meetings; it’s been 4 weeks since I was ORCA NCS and I felt a bit rusty. The band was mostly good with fading mid-net and higher B/G noise levels at (S8-9).

Doug K7KY chose THOR50x1 for the first pass of the FLAMP exercise and hit the ball out of the park by confirming ALL stations. Wow! It went so fast, few Ops had time to complete the exercise for the Traffic round.

Thanks to Greg KG7D, Erik KK6RKY, and Steve W7WSV for taking the time to compile signal reports during the net. Detailed reception reports help us visualize band condx from the perspective of other stations. Thanks to Gene W1EEP, Bruce KB7VX, John KS6M, and Steve W7WSV for taking a few moments to send their test images for the net report. The images increase our understanding of band conditions.

Bruce KB7VX drove home to Chehalis,WA from Fortuna,CA through stormy wx to find it cold and snowing. Despite conditions, he erected a 134′ doublet atop his camper in time for tonight’s net. The effort really paid off; his signal and reception were excellent. See his 2nd test image below, it’s pixel-perfect. John KS6M also printed a perfect test image at the beginning of the net.

Remember Steve K6ETA’s new digital Traffic net, Western Digital Net (WDN). He’s holding another Round-table to determine interest and focus for the net. If you missed the first meeting, please try to ck-in this Thursday evening, 3.581, 1930p/0330z. The initial success of this new Traffic net depends on our support. It’s an idea who’s time has come. Let’s help Steve develop a Traffic net we’ll all be proud of.

We’ll have an off-frequency Traffic exercise next session. Gene W1EEP has volunteered and we’re confident we’ll find him a partner. We should run this exercise regularly; it’s the norm for Traffic nets.

Thanks for taking the time to work with us. We look forward to doing it again next Tuesday. Hope to see you on the WF.

73,
Mindy W7ZAP

ANNOUNCEMENTS 14/Jan/2020

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex152.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file
to NCS in the Traffic round with FLAMP.

Rollout for the (*) check-in option has been less than optimal, but I think we’ve
sorted it out. We’ve enabled a few long-time ORCA Ops to check-in with an * after
their callsign*. These stations are not called for the FLAMP Exercise or Traffic
Round. They will participate in the Comment Round as usual. This enables them to
help us manage net-length when participation is heavy. Most Ops should work the
FLAMP Exercise as usual. Thanks for your patience while we sorted it out.

Here’s an FLDIGI Tip from today’s Win-FLDIGI Forum: To immediately stop a macro,
press the Escape key. I occasionally hit the wrong macro key and stop it by clicking
the T/R button, but a single key stroke is faster than navigating to the T/R button.

Six ORCA stations checked in with Steve K6ETA for the WDN Roundtable last Thursday.
The group agreed on ‘Western Digital Net’ as the new net’s name. Members expressed
their interest in how the net should be focused. If you missed that meeting, please try
to ck-in this Thursday evening, 3.581, 1930p/0330z. Steve has an ARC meeting tonight,
but will be running the WDN Roundtable on Thursday. The initial success of this new
Traffic net depends on our support. It’s an idea who’s time has come. Let’s help Steve
develop a Traffic net we’ll all be proud of.

We want to revive the off-freq Traffic exercise in preparation for the new Traffic net.
Unlike ORCA, Traffic nets pass most traffic off the net frequency. If you participated
in this exercise before, please consider doing it again. Others will learn from your
effort. We’d like to run this exercise next session; we only need two Ops. If you can
do this, please let us know in the Comment Round or by email. Thanks.

Wow, short list and all confirmed on first round. I was on it like white on rice, but just didn’t have enough time to get my ducks in a row. And after I sent it in Flmsg I realised I didn’t paste my reply into the radiogram. Even the best plans don’t always come together.

I did learn one thing tonight…. it looks like Block 0 = Preamble

W7ZAP and the ORCA Digital Net de KB7VX

Greetings from Chehalis, WA, where it is snowing lightly and the fir trees look winter wonderland dusted in a white frosting of snow, and about an inch of snow in the front yard. Good to be home after 3 months working in Fortuna; and good to have the camper home in one piece after driving through heavy rain and wind all the way home yesterday from Bandon, OR.

I sympathize with Gene W1EEP, but checking in first doesn’t leave much time to do the exercise.=-)

Best wishes to all for a good week.

Thanks, Mindy… we seemed to have lost NVIS for awhile, but the weak signals have really bounced back… we really need a couple Ops to work Off – Freq traffic again next session if possible… we want to begin preparing for working the Western Digital Net. it will be great to have an actual Traffic net to work… it will be the next step after ORCA here, we’re learning all the tools in NBEMS and when/how to apply them, but ORCA is not structured like Traffic or Emergency nets and it will be valuable to take our tools and experience to an actual net and work there too.. Lets’ support Steve in this net project it will be worth our while tnx btn < K7KY
