Another tough night on 80m. We also work Phone nets; they’re having a much harder time these days than digital nets. We’re grateful for what we have. Check-out tonight’s propagation test images below. Band condx completely reversed for many stations tonight. Some also experienced one-way propagation.

This brings digital net protocols and conventions to mind. You probably noticed this text sent in the middle of the NBEMS Exercie:

“Late checkins cant hear much srri de K8 ”

This station knew they were late. When you TX blind like this, you’re almost certain to interfere with net operations. Ops new to HF operations may not yet grasp this simple fact. HF condx can change quickly; path between stations may suddenly work in only one direction. For many reasons, your path to NCS may work at ck-in and not work for the Comment Round. That’s HF radio. When you can’t copy net operations, you shouldn’t just transmit blindly; you’ll almost certainly interfere with net operations. For a training net, it’s a teaching moment; on an emergency net, QRM may hinder time sensitive net operations.

We knew we needed solid band condx for the OFDM vs PSK-R Mode Shoot-Out, but it was not to be. Neither mode did well tonight. MFSK-32 & MFSK-22 were up expectations and filled nearly ever station. We couldn’t CONFIRM the Exercise for Tom WB7TZD in Vancouver,WA. We often have difficulty with Washington stations this time of year. But, Tom was able to complete his file and we CONFIRMED him in the after-net Monitor’s Session. OFDM is proving to be what the Developer said earlier, it’s much faster than many VHF modes and can move large files quickly on HF when band condx are favorable. When HF band condx are good, OFDM will be useful.

Ther’ll be No NBEMS Exercise for the last two December sessions; ch-in and Comments only. Everyone’s busy during the Christmas New Year Holiday. We welcome lighter duty this month and thought you could use more free time too. We’ll pick up the NBEMS Exercise next year, 04/Jan/22. We can include a simple exercise with the Path Evaluation Macro. If you’ve not configured this macro, you can download instructions and the image from the website sidebar: orcadigitalnet.com

We worked four stations in the after-net Monitor’s Session tonight. These sessions enable those working the NBEMS Exercise silently to CONFIRM their work and helps keep the main net to a reasonable time. We try to wrap nets in an hour. Thanks for helping us work and practice smart. Others are learning digital net protocols and digital traffic-handling while we train and practice. Thanks for your ongoing participation and support.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR HOLIDAY: After this evening, No NBEMS Exercise until next year, 04/Jan/22. Mark your calendar. Next two sessions, Ck-In and Comment Round only.

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise includes our 2nd OFDM Mode Shoot-Out. We’ll compare OFDM to PSK-R modes of similar bandwidth. OFDM and PSK modes are most suitable for VHF operations, but they can move large files quickly in favorable HF condx.

Tonight’s Mode Shoot-Out, OFDM VS PSK-R:
OFDM-500F, 500hz, & OFDM-750F, 750hz, file = URCALL_ex237A.b2s
vs
PSK-500R, 500hz, & PSK125RC5, 850hz, file = URCALL_ex237B.b2s

For the benefit of QNX and Lurking stations working the Exercise silently, we’ll Fill both files in MFSK-22 or 32, depending on band condx. If you CONFIRM both files, send either one in the Traffic Round.

For the next two net sessions w/o NBEMS Exercises, we’ll have a brief exercise with our Path Evaluation Macro. If you’ve not configured this macro, it’s available on our website sidebar: http://orcadigitalnet.com  Download the Macro Instructions and the TEST image.

December 2020 completes our 9th year of weekly training nets. Your ongoing participation sustains a consistent learning environment. Thank You; it wouldn’t happen without you.

Tnx to the Ops who emailed theiir test image… band looks ok… lets see how the shoot-out goes!

NCS < WB7EUX – NCS signal strength varied from +16db to -10db. MFSK22 finally pieced the second message together.

The forecasted 2 to 3 inches of snow last night turned into 14 inches by 6AM, most falling in a six hour time frame. We spent 2 1/2 hours clearing the patio, deck, driveway and parking lot plus 20 feet up the road so the city plow could back into our driveway to push snow down the street cleanly.

Temp is +7F.

All is well. 73 de WB7EUX

Yes, I noticed ur signal and others fluctuating. Oh my !! That’s a LOT of snow.

No ODFM here.  Mode looks and sounds very interesting!

Had to drop squelch down to zero for PSK modes as fading began.
However, even with dropping signals, once I opened squelch, copy
was quite good.

4pm UTC, NVIS dropped.  Fired up Rpi, SDR & FLDigi using Half Moon
Bay.  Just in case   Ironic, I have better copy on Utah stations
than the big antenna farm at KFS!

I made contact with Steve k6eta! He was QRL down south.

After a good rain day on Monday (1.06″) today started cold @ 35 degrees
and sunny.  Just what the batteries needed.  Already down to 39 with
more rain heading in tonight, and snow at higher elevations.

Hope everyone is warm & dry.  Stay safe and keep the peace.
Remember, EGGNOG DOESN’T GROW ON TREES!   Yum yum

Tonight the band started out short, with NCS at minus 9 to minus 15 db here in south central Misouri, about ten percent copy. About 0330Z, the band went long and NCS jumped to PLUS 3db and up to PLUS 9db with the QSY.

The tornadoes of December 10th missed us here by about 100 miles. That night it became strangely, eerily warm, about 65 degrees, A RECORD and muggy with lightning in the distance.

I was on call last night for the hospital and got HAMMERED, was up to 2 in the morning doing ultrasounds. Only had 3 hours of sleep, but ORCA IS WORTH IT.

We won’t bundle a Mode Shoot-Out with the NBEMS Exercise again. It’s a challenge to set up correctly and challenging to understand and work correctly.  We initially thought it would save net time, but it’s working out just the opposite. Thanks for your patience.

The last 2 net sessions this year will be Ck-In and Comment Round only.  We’ll return to the weekly NBEMS Exercise in January 2022. We wish you all a pleasant and peaceful Christmas Holiday.  Stay Safe, Stay Healthy.

The Rainbow Canyons ARC Christmas Party sounds delicious (-:   BTN < K7KY

I’m looking forward to the ORCA-lite nets for the end of the year
