*Stations called for COMMENTS only

We’re breaking old records and making new ones these days.  Three weeks ago, we set a new Ck-In record at 35 stations. Tonight, we checked in eight Oregon stations, another ORCA record. Having eight Oregon stations on the Roster is much easier to work than 35 Ck-Ins! Both first-time stations tonight are in Oregon. We Welcome Steve KW6M in Walton,OR and David N7QNC in Drain,OR. Oregon is nearly a quarter of the Roster tonight! And, Welcome Back to Gary K7EK in Raddcliff,KY. It’s been a long time since he moved from Washington to Kentucky. His VidID printed clearly in Oregon tonight.

We enjoyed another evening of strange band condx. Although the band soon went long and we lost some of the closer stations, condx later reversed and the missing stations returned, some stronger than before. See the Signal Evaluation images below for a visual perspective of band changes during the net.

The FLAMP Exercise used only THOR modes tonight; we usually use MFSK-32 for the third ‘Sweeper’ pass. THOR-22 is our go-to mode when MFSK-32 struggles (seldom); 78wpm/524hz vs 120wpm/630hz. We don’t often need THOR-22.  The FLAMP Exercise is an opportunity to discover which modes best suit current condx.

If the ANNOUNCEMENT details about the new FLDIGI Macro TAG, <@LOCK:on/off/t> were confusing, this may help. ORCA Protocols call for working net sessions with the FLDIGI cursor LOCKED at 1500wf. If you use our VidID macro with LOCK=on, the macro will set LOCK=off before shifting to 2000wf and sending VidID, but is unable to reset LOCK on. If we didn’t turn LOCK=off, FLDIGI would print VidID where it’s LOCKED, 1500wf. Before the new LOCK TAG, there was no way to turn LOCK off and back on in the same macro. Now, with <@LOCK, the Parser waits until it turns the transmitter off before turning LOCK back on. Until Dave W1HKJ releases the next stable version, 4.1.15, you can use the new TAG with his Alpha version 4.1.14.70, available here:  http://www.w1hkj.com/alpha/fldigi/    This Alpha version and all subsequent Alpha versions support <@LOCK.

Thank you for following ORCA protocols.  Your diligence contributes to a working example of efficient digital networking. It’s the model newer Ops are observing and emulating. Understanding and implementing written instructions is fundamental to handling Emergency traffic.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex191.txt’, an FLDIGI/PC-EDITOR/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the
Traffic round with FLAMP. This exercise simulates supporting NCS by copy/paste Relay.

WDN’s Relay Exercise went well last Thursday with interesting results. Steve K6ETA,
WDN/NCS, planned to have a strong station Relay the call for Ck-In and hopefully log
the target station in Kentucky, Gary K7EK. But suddenly, during Early Ck-In, ‘K7EK/KY
QNX’ was printing at 2000wf. Quite a surprise! Gary’s VidID signal was strong enough
to print in Oregon. You’ll learn more about the WDN Relay exercise on Thursday.
Thank You to Gary for his part in the exercise.

Our FLDIGI benefactor, Dave W1HKJ, added a new Macro TAG at our request. The new
<@LOCK TAG sets LOCK on/off/t after <RX executes. Now, we can turn LOCK off and on
in the same macro. I’d mistakenly thought we could just add the @ to a TAG to have it
execute when TX ends, but no. We’ve updated the website Macro page VidID examples
to utilize the new TAG. Now, if you’ve forgotten to set LOCK at 1500 for ORCA, this
macro sets LOCK=ON after returning the Cursor to previous frequency.

If LOCK=ON is already enabled, our macro must turn it off before executing the <TX TAG. If
the Cursor remains Locked, the Macro Parser will ignore and print at the Cursor’s current
position. We need to turn LOCK OFF before transmitting and back ON after returns the
Cursor to it’s last position. To experiment with the new TAG, you’ll need FLDIGI Alpha
version 4.1.14.70. Download it here:
http://www.w1hkj.com/alpha/fldigi/

Please email the Signal Evaluation images (not screen-capures) to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Wow, band went long quick tonight! NCS is just barely audible by beginning of net. Should be interesting to see how much NCS copies my comments tonight! I am

surprised that I still DO hear NCS!

Best signa4here tonight was Bruce kb7vx! Good work Bruce!!

New Lipo4 400AH battery went online today along with a new 40A solar controller. Love having full power for the radios after dark!

Tomorrow this laptop will get a new version of Linux. Downloaded Xubuntu for this old beast. Hopefully the install goes easy on me. Fingers are crossed!

Had another beautiful day here, 70’s and lots of sun. Old lead acid batteries are charged and new LIPO4 is 7/8% by dark thirty. Tomorrow there’s supposed to be wind

and I hope that doesn’t stir up the fires too much!

Be safe and sure great to see you all tonight.

W7ZAP and ORCA iB7VX/p.
I got a late start this morning, due to my company sending me to Olympia for a last minute drug screen and a physical. I finally hit the road at 12:15. I wanted to

stop earlier but the winds were HOWLING across the Oregon steppes in Morrow County. I almost got blown over when I went outside to fill up the gas tank. So I ended up

driving another 60 miles and the wind is still blowing but not gale force anymore. I arrived here in Pendleton at about 18:45, set up 134 ft doublet in the dark.

Tomorrow will go over the Blue Mountains continuing on toward NM. If anyone sees KG5DGI or Cowan let them know I will be passing near them. I sent both ops a Winlink

email but so far have received no reply.

Jaye has a great signal here onn his inverted M. I lost NCS just before TFC round.

Best wishes to all,

Eight Oregon stations on tonight; another ORCA record! We spend our first years with only Mindy & I working the OR/CA digital net.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes first time ck-ins Steve KW6M in Walton,OR and David N7QNC in Drain, OR. We’ll ask them to ck-in QNX a few time to learn net routines and

protocols. Good to have them aboard.

Good work all around on the FLAMP Optional Exercise. The Optional Exercise used to be difficult, but times and Ops have changed, much to the good. Now, these

Exercises seem almost easy.

Steve W7WSV We’ve not given Gary 40m for regular nets. Just for the WDN Exercise.

I’m hoping for a long Indian Summer (can I still say this?). We recently planted more carrots, chard, and beets. They need a few weeks of sunshine. Maybe we’ll get

an ‘Original Americans Summer’ or sumsuch. The net ran like clockwork; thanks for contributing to a efficient net. btn Doug K7KY
