Tonight brought a few more challenges than poor band condx. We didn’t check our antennas before the net. NCS had the weaker antenna. We logged few distant stations and those were mostly QNX. A difficult band, made worse by a weaker NCS signal. Condx did improve during the net, but not much. Tim WB8HRO was able to ck-in by VidID as the net ended. Mid-net, I accidentally touched a task-bar icon that shuts down immediately. A dark screen. Rats!… Our dual NCS system worked well; we were quickly back to normal. I was a little unsettled by wrong antenna and tough ck-in; please excuse a couple moments of impatience.

Band condx led almost inescapably to QRM during ck-in. When Ops don’t copy NCS as they usually do, they begin to wonder if NCS is actually there. We encounter this scenario working other digital nets. It’s normal for digital nets in poor band condx. For ORCA, you should assume NCS is working ck-in at the usual time. We’ve not missed net ck-in in 7.5yrs. Calling around on net-frequency to see if anyone copies NCS is almost certain to QRM NCS working ck-in. Best guess is NCS is active beyond your reception and wait for a RELAY to call for ck-ins. In unfavorable band condx, you may not be able to work the net as usual. That’s radio. And, no aspersions on anyone tonight; these are learning moments. Many may learn from one error.

With only two Active stations tonight, the FLAMP Exercise went quickly. Another ORCA First. Still, we included a Fill relay. When NCS asks you to Relay Fills, parse the request carefully. It usually include, #Blocks, Mode, and a TxID reminder. If you miss any of these instructions, we’ll have to repeat your relay. The FLAMP Exercise is busy and brisk; stay focused and we’ll finish quickly.

The OPTIONAL Exercise included in the FLAMP Exercise has numerous objectives. One objective is learning to parse and implement multiple instructions while maintaining focus on tasks, net flow, and your place in Rotation. During the FLAMP Exercise, we’re preoccupied; we’re tracking everyone’s Fill needs, mode changes, who’s next, etc. It’s a challenging exercise for us. It’s not the time to call NCS. Other net events are not as intense and we welcome your call. Often, net members hear stations calling that we’ve missed. Your assistance is important and appreciated. During the FLAMP Exercise, non-urgent issues can wait until the Exercise concludes. To contact NCS at other times, use VidID at 2000wf or send your CALL between transmissions. We call for Late ck-ins at regular intervals.

Nice work running the Comment Round again. It works well and saves net time too. We do miss the opportunity to follow up on relevant comments, but we’re comfortable calling two of every three Comment Rounds, with you conducting every third session. Every third session now includes the Option for a volunteer to conduct the Comment Round as NCS. It’s very easy. Really. You’ll call the Active stations in rotation; there will only be <10 Active station on the Roster. We’ll pass net-control to you for the Comment Round and you’ll return it to NCS when finished. It’s a basic net-management task for NCS; it will give you a comfortable foundation for learning more NCS routines. You can learn NCS routines in small steps on ORCA DIGITAL NET and WESTERN DIGITAL NET. Think about running the next ‘3rd session’, 2June20. We’ll prepare you to NCS an easy and enjoyable Comment Round.

WDN is also poised to help you learn digital NCS routines in small steps. Calling the Comment Round on either net is an easy entry into learning NCS routines. Even if you don’t aspire to full-time NCS duties, you’ll have more digital routines and tactics in your inventory. That’s a plus.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 12/May/2020

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex169.txt’, an FLDIGI/PC-EDITOR/FLAMP
Exercise. CONFIRM ‘ex169.txt’ before working the OPTIONAL Exercise. If you complete
the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

Current band condx are both frustrating and useful. Relaying comes to the fore. Last
Thursday on WDN we had to work long and hard to CONFIRM a QTC from Mesa,AZ. No
one copied the traffic when the net opened. Steve K6ETA/NCS tried again after the QST
Round. Condx were better, but still, no one could CONFIRM. We eventually did CONFIRM
with numerous relays filling enough blocks to enable one station to fill NCS. We were
down to MFSK-16. It took a long time and underlined the importance of relay tactics.

Brad WA7HHE later suggested NCS send a strong station off-freq to collect the traffic
and relay to the net. DeJaVue ? Isn’t this the off-freq traffic-handling exercise we work
occasionally? This is a key relay tactic. Let’s rename the exercise, Off-Freq Relay, and
work it regularly. Band condx may not improve on the old 11 year cycle; they may be
with us much longer. We’ll be better digital Ops in the outcome.

The long relay on WDN and email comments from Darrell W6ADZ in Reno,NV got me thinking
about the slow but robust modes we occasionally need to CONFIRM traffic. Because they’re
so slow, we don’t use them often. Because they’re slow, we suggest you experiment with them
in QSO, etc, off-net on 80m and other bands to learn more about their characteristics and
when best to use them. Here are some of those we’ve used successfully before.

Olivia 4/250 = 20wpm
Olivia 8/250 = 15wpm
MFSK-4 = 18wpm
MFSK-8 = 36wpm

Lets do a little mode experimenting when we bump into colleagues at the watering hole.

Tonight is the third session since you managed Comment Round yourselves and we’ll do
it again tonight. We hand the net to the first Active Op on the Roster who will pass to the
next Op, etc. Last Active Op returns the net to NCS. We’d also like to open every third
session to a volunteer who would conduct the Comment Round as NCS. It’s an opportunity
to inch toward NCS capabilities w/little stress. It’s easy, usually interesting, and doesn’t
take long. You’re only working <10 Active stations. To give this a try, contact NCS. We’ll
set you up to succeed.

You can also conduct the Comment Round on Western Digital Net. Steve K6ETA/NCS is looking
for guest NCS. You can begin learning WDN/NCS routines by conducting the WDN Comment
Round. Contact Steve at the WDN website: http://westerndigitalnet.org WDN has one of the
nicest Amateur websites and it’s certainly outstanding in the digital-net community. I always
check-out net websites; many Amateur nets have no web presence.

Please email the Test images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com for the Net Report. Thank you!

All reporting stations were readable here in Chehalis WA. Band has been gaining since chk in. s/n have almost doubled since the start.

Lots of rain here in western WA today. On Thursday I will be reporting in to WDN from Pendleton OR. I will be on m way to Weiser ID for a job interview. Exercise tonight was fast and I was on the edge of my seat with the Thor 50 relay :-) Thanks Mindy for the challenge!! I need to learn how to send just limited blocks. If I put in “1” in the “blks” box, does that mean just block #1 gets relayed? This is how I am learning, by making mistakes. So did George Washington. He lost a lot of battles but won in the end. :-)

W1EEP, s5 7db, 100%

Really surprised the DX stations aren’t copying NCS! Your down to s5 and seems like the band is going long. OH MY GOD! Mindy is BOOMING, I believe NCS was running qrp!

Had a pretty good day here, the rain really never came around, bit windy, but warm. Left the doors open until 5:30 when I was summoned by tigers for DINNER!

New rig showed up via FEDEX Ground. I was able to cobble it into this old laptop using a single USB cable. Miss the Signalink though, nice having the Knobs to play with :)

Some ops need to up their game when checking in late. Heard two of them waiting too long to get a signal on the air and NCS ended up doubling. Get on that TUNE button folks!

Have lots and lots of learning to do before I have a good command of this radio. I checked in tonight and my ALC was hopping way too high. I went off freq and re-calibrated. Came back and THEN realized I was on the WRONG matchbox! I miss the SWR metering on the rig!

I think the gremlins were with us tonight :)

Have a safe week and hope to see you all again on the WDN.

Over to Steve! K6ETA

< K6ETA / NCS

Thanks for the net tonight and I wholeheartedly agree about relaying off frequency when there’s a weak station.

Maybe whenever NCS is having trouble with a station, anyone already checked in as active, with a good or at least decent copy should use Video ID to indicate they are offering to relay? NCS can then ask that station if they’d like to move up 5, etc.?

I like the way ORCA and WDN can learn from each other’s net!

When sending images in MFSK from the TX window:
“Hold the mouse over either the XmtClr or the XmtGry button and the tooltip will tell you the transmit time for this image.” FLDIGI Manual v4.1.00, pg 234

Tough band condx tonite. Makes for challenging net for all. I didn’t realize until I was about to TX the FLAMP exercise that I had Doug’s antenna… ooops! No wonder stns weren’t hearing Doug well at ck-in. Sorry about that Doug :)

The FLAMP round made me wonder if all Ops are familiar with manually filling in blocks to be relayed. On the RX tab, 2 buttons: FETCH and RELAY, then a blank field lists the blocks. If you FETCH, you get all the missing REPORTS and TX all the missing blocks. Sometimes you’ll want to put the missing blocks in manually when trying to send fewer blocks to complete fill. Yes, Bruce if you want block 1, that should be in the block field :-)
