Band condx can be discouraging these days. Tonight, some stations had excellent path and others had none. We didn’t do well with stations in Utah & Idaho. The Rainbows Canyon ARC meeting in Cedar City,UT contributed to an unusually light Roster. Summer participation is always less than Winter. We look forward to shorter days when our Eastern members reconnect.

Hats-Off to Jack WA6CR in Novato,CA for completing an Advanced NBEMS Exercise on his 3rd Ck-In. He’s obviously familiar with digital operations and the NBEMS suite. It’s good to have him aboard.

We do less experimenting with Modes during NBEMS Exercises when band condx are this poor. When most Exercise participants need numerous blocks, we resend the entire file. In better condx, most stations need only a few blocks. Then, we ask a strong station to relay only blocks needed. Helping NCS Fill the file by Relay is useful practice.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight we have an Advanced NBEMS Exercise and Traffic Round. Our Traffic Round is part of the Advanced Exercise. We don’t process formal Traffic except in emergencies.

You may have noticed the recent Basic Exercises were about preparedness. Being prepared becomes more important by the day. We’re in a period of systemic instability. Many important health, food, fuel, and material distribution systems are in disarray. It’s definitely a time to pay close attention to what’s happening in the world, country, community, and neighborhood.

When we think of preparedness, our radio stations and communication skills come immediately to mind. In our neighborhood, we’re the only radio station. Many of you will have similar circumstances. Our ability to communicate when the usual channels are down will be important for our neighbors. They will be inclined to network with us for support and security. Growing enough food to share in the hood will also strengthen our position in a neighborhood network. ORCA Ops are already a solid network of like minded individuals. We can extend our networking and communications skills with our neighbors. Better we prepare now instead of coming-from-behind in emergencies.

ORCA’s training format has changed significantly over the years. Initially, we were more hands-on with training. Today, we do very little actual teaching on-air during nets, but we do a lot more by email and telephone. It’s ORCA members that changed our training routines. Today, incoming Ops learn by observing how regular members work the net. It’s a natural and intuitive evolution we didn’t envision. We assumed we’d always be training during nets. ORCA is a collection of accomplished digital Operators/Elmers. Their weekly practice is a teaching event for incoming Ops. Newbies are more familiar with digital operations than before.

Our Protocols are simple and effective. We get a lot done without wasting time and bandwidth. We seldom have doubles or out-of-order transmissions. Incoming Ops learn by observation and emulation. Most ORCA Ops are happy to help newbies. Our learning environment works best for self-starters. Today, many incoming Ops contact us off-net with questions about net operations.

Western Digital Net News:  There’s a possibility that Steve K6ETA’s work schedule will change and he can resume the WDN/NCS role on Thursday evenings. Steve moved from Petaluma,CA to Mt Shasta,CA when his employer agreed he could work from home. Later, this agreement changed. Now, Steve has to be in the Bay Area on Thursday and Friday. Currently, four ORCA Ops NCS WDN. Steve suggests dropping QTCs from Ck-In and refining Preamble text. Please continue supporting WDN; Steve invested a lot of time and energy already. WDN may be an important net in the near future. We’d not like to see it shuttered.

Last few days have been quite a challenge.  Helping my amazing buddy clear out his Mom’s house.  Made trips and loaded cloths and other things for local thrift stores.  Today, her obituary was published & quite beautiful.  Today he and his wife took some time away.  I’ll offer more help tomorrow.

Covid aftermath has really made itself known to me.  The exhaustion is overwhelming.  I seem to be able to go for a few hours then it hits with full force, there is no stopping it.  My body is also dealing with the aches and new pains as well.  I don’t know how long it will last but I sure am looking forward to feeling at least some new energy.

I’m trying to keep up on the radio end, but I have spent far less time last few weeks while coping.  Our digital nets are still my highlights of the week.  Have no idea how the high bands have been lately.

Tonight, I’m again using the comment.txt macro.  I save the bits that recur each week.  Actually helps having it set up

I would like to invite all stations to check into our Winlink Wednesday net with Matt, kn6cei!  Check out the site: humboldtwednesdaywinlink.net

Stay well and hope to see you down the wf soon!

Today the high was 110 degrees. Got the second doublet fixed outside even though it was a hot today.
Need more testing to see the differences between the North-South doublet and the East-West doublet.
It does get hot in the desert this time of year. Life in the Great Basin desert.
Right now it’s down to 100. Also I tired checking in earlier but the sound card some how changed from Codec
to computer. So I had to do a complete reset with the computer and log in 5 minutes later. But it worked.

I will send the file at monitors portion lots of problems tonight don’t know hy
