When the Rainbow Canyon ARC meeting coincides with our net, we usually have a smaller Roster. Not so tonight; we logged 32 stations. Seven stations opted for the FLAMP Exercise. We didn’t hear from Rob KA7ERV again after after ck-in. The remaining six Ops all CONFIRMED the primary Exercise and also completed the Advanced Exercises. With two Advanced Exercises, there’s more to do in the same amount of time. You might not realize this by monitoring the Exercise. Everyone took it in stride, making it appear easy.

The after-net Monitor’s Session was busy tonight too. This Session, usually brief, gives Monitoring stations an opportunity to Comment and FILL or CONFIRM FLAMP Exercises they’ve worked silently. Soon, they will be comfortable as Active participants.

Adding a Macro Exercise to the FLAMP Exercise is working well. So far, we’re making very simple Macros. Not everyone is up to speed with the Macro Editor. We’ll continue with simple Macros and work our way toward more complexity. You may have already noticed, there’s more than one way to code a Macro. Some TAGS are very specific and difficult to get wrong. Others are very flexible and easy to mis-configure. Notice that the <TX> & <RX> Tags do not have to be at the start and end of the Macro. The Editor reads the whole Macro before beginning execution. These two Tags will execute correctly, even though they’re placement appears illogical.

We’re hoping for some Macro Editor input from the group. Doug is a self-taught Macro fan; Dave W1HKJ has explained the Macro Editor to him twice, but his understanding is still a little sketchy. You don’t have to be a Macro Editor expert to create useful Macros. There are numerous ways to configure Macros, some more elegant than others. We’ve not yet touched on Saving Macros. Our practice Macros disappear when FLDIGI closes.

Here’s a more complex VidID Macro to experiment with. It prints your CALL @ 2000wf and returns the cursor to the current mode/freq. It’s easily modified. Copy it into a blank macro button and alter TAG content and position to learn how they work.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Dan KV7B in Tuscon,AZ. Dan checked in during the after-net Monitor’s Session. Welcome back to Carroll W7WXV in Prineville,OR. He returns with a new 80m horizontal loop and a solid signal. Net format has changed a bit since he was here last, but he managed the changes easily. To give yourself more time to work Advanced Exercises, don’t log in too early. Stations at the top of the Roster have the least time to complete Advanced Exercises before NCS calls for Traffic. If you don’t work an Advanced Exercise, send QRU in the Traffic Round.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex219.txt’, with two ADVANCED Exercises. If you complete an ADVANCED Exercise, send it when NCS calls for your Traffic. CONFIRM 100% copy of the primary file before working an ADVANCED Exercise. Monitoring stations can FILL or CONFIRM Exercise files in the after-net Monitor’s Session.

ORCA DIGITAL NET & QST Traffic:
ORCA is a Training Net. We don’t process actual Traffic. It’s not our mission and we haven’t enough time. Our training sessions are already long. Years ago, we had fewer members and a simpler format. Members brought practice traffic for the Traffic Round. That traffic was of general interest to Amateurs, but it’s primary purpose was practice.

As the net grew and developed, net operations became more complex and demanding. When we added ADVANCED Exercises to the weekly FLAMP Exercise, we linked the Traffic Round to the Exercise. Files generated by ADVANCED Exercises are transmitted to NCS in the Traffic Round. NCS CONFIRMS these files, completing a full traffic-handling evolution for Ops working the FLAMP Exercise. Increasing Exercise complexity increased net length, as did increasing participation. Net sessions were exceeding 1.5hr. At this point we stopped taking practice
files (QSTs) and attached the Traffic Round to the FLAMP Exercise.

Brad WA7HHE had become expert at summarizing articles in a few sentences with a URL for those interested. His Traffic took little longer than files generated in the Exercise. We liked how well Brad condensed articles and it added a bit of interesting info, keeping the net from being all-business. Now, more members would like to send useful articles too. No surprise.

The scope of our QST review includes our close associate, Western Digital Net. Meeting two days after ORCA, WDN is an actual Traffic Net, structured and poised to process all types of Traffic, especially QST’s for the membership. We do Training; WDN does Traffic. Most of WDN’s members are also ORCA Ops.

Here’s our solution: Ops with articles they wish to share can include a brief summary of the article w/URL AFTER their Comments in the Comment Round. This won’t add much time (<3min); it enables interested Ops to follow up. This same article can be sent more fully on WDN/Thursday as a QST. The brief summary in ORCA Comments will whet appetites for more info on Thursday.

ORCA’s Ck-In protocol doesn’t include Traffic Q-Codes, ie: QST, QTC, QRU. Please don’t use these Q-Codes for ORCA Ck-In; it confuses newer Ops. QST, QTC, & QRU are Traffic Net options.

Example of Comments w/QST:
I’ve been revising my HF antenna blah blah blah..
…………………………….also this week.
Here a summary of a useful XYZ article: USGov’t
discovers…blah blah. +URL btn <UR-CALL (time target= <3min)

Send Comment/QST in one transmission w/Blank form, Cpy/Paste, Keyboard, as you like.

The 20m Digital Net on Sat AM still needs Relay assistance. If you can help sustain the old SATERN Int’l Digital Training Net, many regular Ops will appreciate your effort.

If you would like email notice when the Net Report is posted, write: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

I have local noise, like an FM carrier on freq tonight, it IS hampering my copy tonight. It’s sounding like telco & VARA.

I tried to find Bruce this past weekend. Never did find him on the air but I sure had fun making digital, CW, and SSB contacts from 20m – 80m!

W7WXV made contact w/me on Monday digi net and he has a NEW ANTENNA in the air! Good work and welcome back om!

Have noted both QSB and multipathing tonight.

I still have not figured out why my TXiD button turns on without my help!

Gah, w7zap, same db at k7ky and FLAmp 100% x2 tonight!

Great to see you all tonight. Have fun, be safe, and hope to see you again next week or on the WDN!

Up on top of the camper, in the dark, as I was taking down the 134 ft doublet last week after ORCA, while looking up in the northwest sky, about 10 o’clock on the horizon, at about 2210 hours MDT, was a series of about 15, maybe 20, very bright stars, all in a neat row, spaced about an inch apart and moving slowly eastward. I looked on in amazement and remembered WA7HHE’s traffic (Amazing.txt). These were satellites that had been maneuvered into position for this demonstration of a satellite ballet. Thanks, Brad for helping me appreciate and understand the demonstration, rather than question my vision or my sanity.

The new hire ultrasound tech arrived last Monday, and began orientation. Two days later, she came down with severe diarrhea and vomiting, and ended up in our hospital. She was diagnosed with Clostridium dificile. By the end of the week, she was discharged but felt she needed to fly home for a complete recovery; and she has decided NOT to come back. So, once again, I will be on call every other weekend and will only be able to make it to ORCA every other week. On the bright side, I think I now have job security for the remainder of my contract here. Best wishes to all on ORCA. Another great lessson. Thanks Doug and Mindy!

Welcome back to Carroll W7WXV and Rob KA7ERV. Band is up/down + QRM w/overall good copy on most. Wondering if stns that didn’t copy FLAMP 1st pass in THOR100 had filters on preventing copy of wide mode or just poor band condx? Ops are doing very well to complete both FLAMP exe + Macro exe in such a short span of time. Nice to see so many Ops w/emergency power setup… no surprise

Beautiful WX in Brookings past few days. Great time to be working outdoors

Thanks to all for taking the time to ck-in & work with us. Hope to CU on the WF again soon!

Stay Safe & 73,
