With a few exceptions, 80m was better than usual tonight. We logged John KD0NBH in Kansas City,MO and did better than usual with stations to our N&S & SE. Rainbow Canyons ARC meets on the 2nd Tuesday, so no Cedar City,UT ck-ins. Gene W1EEP in Pine Valley is our only Utah ck-in tonight. Prior to ck-in, Gene sent our test image by macro. The image was pixel perfect. Our path to Pine Valley,UT was solid tonight, a welcome change for Gene.

Steve K6ETA checked in just after closing. He’s recovered from a brief bout of COVID and feels 100% fit for duty. Good to hear. Remember his Western Digital Net on Thursday, same time and frequency as ORCA.

Thanks for sending the test images by email every week. The images reflect each stations path to NCS and the extent of change in an hour. Next week, we’ll ask the Active stations to use their Path Evaluation Macro to send the test image mid-net. We’ll publish those images in the Net Report and see how NCS copies those stations.

The NBEMS Exercise change is working out well so far. Sessions with the Basic NBEMS Exercise have been wrapping in less than an hour. That’s good for all. Next session will also have a Basic Exercise. We hope these changes work well for everyone.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

We’ll run another Basic NBEMS Exercise tonight. That means no Advanced Exercise or Traffic Round. Next Tuesday, 18/Jan/22, we’ll also run a Basic NBEMS Exercise. For the last Tuesday this month, 25/Jan/22, we run the Advanced NBEMS Exercise. That’s the Basic and Advanced Exercises combined. If you appreciate a strong digital traffic-handling challenge, don’t miss the Advanced Exercises.

Anniversary Month reminds us we still have some ORCA DIGITAL NET decals.  They’re designed for external application on equipment, cups, etc.  We’ve searched for black 11oz straight side cups for these decals, but never found a site to buy less than 100cups. A good thing as it turns out. We applied them to two blue cups and realized the way we ordered them is wrong for a black background. They won’t look right on a black cup.  The mfg says the decals are OK with sunlight and dishwashers. We don’t have a dishwasher, but we’ve washed our cups once or twice a day w/o issue for more than a year. YMMV

If you want an ORCA logo decal, send a SASE to:
ORCA DIGITAL NET
17029 Ferry Creek Hgts
Brookings,OR 97415

When they’re gone, they’re gone. We have to buy 100 @ $.85 and we probably won’t reorder. ORCA   during early ckk-in, Carroll W7WXV sent a tsunami bulletin in FLAMP  if you didn’t confirm or missed it entirely, not to worry   There’s NO tsunami       Next is the Basic NBEMS Exerecise w/Mindy W7ZAP  < K7KY

NCS < WB7EUX – Seven hour power outage on Sunday left our potting shed and over wintered geraniums in jeopardy. I was just running an extension cord out the potting shed door to hookup to our 7kw generator when the power came back on. Our house was approaching the low 50s by then. I have a jury rigged way to hook up the furnace to generator power but I have never tested it. Luckily I didn’t have to. Been planning for years to have a switch over installed to pick up the critical circuits but haven’t gotten around to it.

Did a lot of radio playing today.  Dabbled with ft8, then some js8call, and even some SSTV.  Worked 15m to 160m.  Poor old battery will never get fully charged after all the rain/storms   Yet station voltage is still at 13.12vdc so I won’t complain.  Even heard some beacons on 10M. The bands are in pretty darned good shape and I hope we are taking full advantage of it!

So far, condx better w/NCS tonight.  P3 on first image.  I even copied the roster.  Right now you just topped 15db!  Never ASSUME on HF

We had two sunny days and today was partly cloudy.  However, looks like more sun next few days.  I’ll try to temper myself and let the panels charge up the battery a bit!

There used to be a cute program that would send light signals in CW. It was a lot of fun.  It was a picture of a little ship, and you could copy cw on the keyboard.  Wonder if it is still around.  It might have been on a website.

I am willing to assist Don on his pi.  Send me a email Don!  I am loving my Rpi4.

Good to see all you people tonight!  Have a wonderful evening.
Be well and keep the peace.
