The net was small and easy tonight. Band condx were OK, but we did struggle a bit with the FLAMP exercise. Mindy W7ZAP began the exercise in MFSK-64 and filled with MFSK-32. While filling for Gene W1EEP we noticed his FLAMP missed the file name, reporting the file name as ‘unassigned’, and blocks 4 & 5 missing. Doug KA7FOO relayed blocks 0 (preamble), 4, & 5. Gene’s FLAMP next reported the file name correctly and blocks 4 & 5 still missing. It did not report the ‘Preamble’ as missing. Mindy sent what was requested, blocks 4 & 5. Next, Gene’s station asked for, ‘Preamble’. It seems his app should have asked for the Preamble and blocks 4 & 5 in the previous REPORT.

The FLAMP manual indicates the report should look like this when File-Name, StationID, & Block Count is missing:

DE S0MCAL File : Unassigned
<MISSING 14 FB42>{0EE2}PREAMBLE
DE S0MCAL K

When File-Name is received, but not the StationID or Block Count, the report should look like this:

DE S0MCAL File : Fox.txt
<MISSING 14 FB42>{0EE2}PREAMBLE
DE S0MCAL K

When I’ve learned as much as I can about this process, I’ll post a query to Dave W1HKJ.

Next week we’ll send two stations off the net frequency to pass traffic. Passing traffic off the working frequency is normal on Traffic and Emergency nets. Our net is unusual in this aspect; we pass all traffic on frequency so everyone can monitor all phases of traffic handling. Passing traffic elsewhere keeps the frequency free for net business.

To simulate a Traffic/Emergency net, I will send the TX/RX Ops up or down freq to pass traffic. After passing their traffic, they will RECHECK into the net and report, ‘CALLSIGN, passed 1 traffic’ or ‘CALLSIGN, received 1 traffic’. On a busy net, there may be numerous stations passing traffic off-freq and returning to net. NCS will track all stations and direct and record the stream of traffic.

Traffic stations can return to the net by printing their callsign on the waterfall with VideoID. We’ll see an example of this during the exercise. VideoID enables you to get NCS’s attention w/o interrupting ongoing operations. Returning stations can also send, ‘CALLSIGN RECHECK’ @ 1500 when there’s a break in the net.

Thanks for working with us tonight. It’s a pleasure learning and practicing with you. I hope to see you again next Tuesday evening for another session. 73 Doug K7KY

ORCA ANNOUNCEMENTS 10 October 2017

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex41.txt’, an FLMSG

/FLAMP exercise using the ICS-213 form. Complete the exercise

instructions and send the file to NCS during TRAFFIC round using

FLAMP, or send your own practice traffic, or QRU.

Next week we’ll ask two Ops to pass traffic off the net frequency,

simulating an actual emergency net or regular traffic net. I hope to

engage a couple Ops already using VideoID. We’ll demonstrate off-net

traffic handling and re-entering the net with VideoID.

Instructions for printing your callsign on the waterfall with VideoID

are on the website. See: http://orcadigitalnet.com/resources/macros/.

Your callsign in VideoID is easier to read when it’s printed large and

horizontal on either side of 1500.

Net Report posted as soon as we can…
