We logged 30 stations tonight, 4 of them Active. That makes for a shorter net and less work for NCS. It coincided nicely with transmit issues in my station. My radio failed to transmit for the NBEMS Exercise. I’ve had problems with the Data port connector lately. Our routines and years of practice really paid dividends tonight. Mindy took over the NBEMS Exercise and continued with the net as usual. We’re both always prepared to take over, but we’ve only done it 2-3 times. Nothing substitutes for training and regular practice. I was impressed with how smoothly Mindy flowed into my slot and continued with net events. She can run the net solo w/o breaking stride or stressing. Usually, whoever runs the NBEMS Exercise also runs the after-net Monitor’s Session, but tonight, Mindy ran it all. Regular practice is the foundation of these skills.

Some Ops noticed that Mindy sent the opening B&W TESTimage in Color. Mindy lost all her ORCA Data files including her Log last week. She imported my Log and Macro files and spent much of Tuesday revising and rearranging my Macros for her station. When configuring the TESTimage Macro, she forgot to specify ‘G,'(Grayscale), so FLDIGI sent the image in Color mode(default). As the image has no color, the only indication in the received image was colorful HF noise. Sending this B&W image in Color mode takes twice as long. You may have noticed that FLDIGI added a ‘C’ to the image prefix: ‘Sending Pic:140x140C’. With the Macro configured for Grayscale, the prefix looks like this: ‘Sending Pic:140×140’. For a B&W image Macro, we add ‘G,’ to the image Tag arguments: ‘<IMAGE:G,E:\FL_APPS\fldigi.files\images\0RCAtest.png>’,

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Zach N0ZGO in Southlake,Texas. Zach is our first Texas station. Wow! It’s taken 10yrs to collect a Texas Ck-In. I think I met Zach previously off-net; he’s already in my log. We’ll ask Zach to read our Quick-Start Guide: http://orcadigitalnet.com/quick-start/. If the NBEMS Exercise interests him, he can learn it easily while Monitoring and check his work in the after-net Monitor’s Session. Welcome back to Sila AK0SK in Kansas City, Missouri. We logged three Missouri stations tonight. They’re 2 time zones away. We appreciate the extra effort it takes to work with us.

Thanks to everyone for following net protocol. Adhering to our simple protocols enables us to get a lot of useful practice in less time. Besides working efficiently, we present a working example of efficient digital networking. Others are learning by monitoring our practice. We often hear from Ops that monitor and work the Exercises, but don’t Ck-In.

On 24/Jan/23 we’ll again use the Path Evaluation Macro in the Comment Round. If you’ve not configured the Path Evaluation Macro, it’s available for download in the right column of our website. On the 24th you’ll send the Path Macro and your comments in either order. Whichever you choose, send both in a single transmission. There’s a few ways to accomplish this. However you choose, alter your Macros as needed to send comments and image in a single transmission. We’ll add the 10th Anniversary TESTimage to downloads too; you can choose the original or Anniversary image. If you need assistance with the Path Evaluation Macro, email: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Thank you for emailing TESTimages for the Net Report.     < Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS

We had lightning this morning and more is predicted this evening. If we’re suddenly silent, you’ll know why.

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise entails creating a Macro on-the-fly, an Exercise suggested by Don KJ7VGV. Instead of creating a message file,
we’ll create a Macro and send it in the Traffic Round. Last year, we often experimented with Macros. If you weren’t here for those
experiments, this Exercise may be too advanced. If you don’t understand the Exercise, send QRU in the Traffic Round. The ability to
create Macros quickly is useful; we’ll work with Macros again later this month.

ORCA NBEMS Exercises simulate busy Emergency Nets where time can be critical. A little time pressure adds realism to the Exercise.
Your attention is divided between Exercise tasks and tracking your position in net-flow. If you focus exclusively on the Exercise, you’ll
miss NCS calling and delay the Exercise. Incoming Ops work NBEMS Exercises silently as Monitors(QNX) until they’ve learned the
Exercises. Only then should they Ck-In Active to participate live. Tracking NCS & net-flow is more important than working the Exercise.

Ck-In QNX and work the Exercise silently, FILLING missed blocks, or CONFIRMING the file in the after-net Monitor’s Session. Take
advantage of the Monitor’s Session and get a solid grasp on the Exercise before participating live. It takes practice to complete Exercise
tasks AND track your place in net-flow. Reporting Fill blocks needed and/or file CONFIRMED is part of the Exercise. You must CONFIRM
the Exercise file BEFORE working the Exercise.

We heard from an ORCA alumni this week. Bruce KB7VX was a traveling medical technician, but recently took a permanent position in
Missouri. He’s clearing land for cabins for himself and family. He’s also become an AmRRon Asset, developing OPERN (Ozarks
Preparedness Emergency Radio Networkg). When he completes a 240′ doublet @ 100′, he’ll be an AmRRon NCS.  He’s become ‘a voice
for AmRRon in the Ozarks’. Bruce isn’t the first ORCA Op to leverage his digital networking and traffic-handling skills in his local
community.

Did you catch Jack WA6CR’s comments last week? He, “set up a satellite dish for reception on GOES-17 and it has given me some very
nice satellite images of the earth, and makes it easy to track the weather and get alerts.” The project isn’t difficult or expensive. See this
URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_S8d_1KVhU

Macro Exercise 24/Jan/23: Two weeks from today, we’ll again use our Path Evaluation Macro in the Comment Round. If you’ve not yet
configured this macro, download it from the website, right hand column, and be ready for the 24th. Active stations will send this Macro
during Comments. ¬mr¼rh
Here @NCS we’re both having issues… Doug’s data socket on the back of his radio is
having connection issues. I lost ALL of my macros and log files last week, so I got
a copy of Doug’s and have been modifying them to look/run like what I had. Layout is
different, but should do the job… fingers crossed :-/ My test image was slow… it was in color instead of b/w!

Wow, like a switch was flipped, NCS now in negative db.  Now very
difficult copy on NCS & Don kj7vgv.

Also, make sure to NOT SAVE MACRO’s when you close FLDigi tonight 😄

Hmmm, where’s Dennis w6dlw?  Rcvd email they canceled meeting due to
weather.

Condx here are WET with more WET on top of the other WET!  We are now
above the yearly average for rainfall.  In fact, I think most all of
California is now above normal rainfall.  Now there are little elderly
people dressed in yellow with a stop sign standing near the pacific
ocean 😄  Picture the folks at school bus stops!

I had very good copy on Bruce kb7vx today.  He’s having issues with
his WL2K software.  We are going to try to do some testing and figure
out what’s happening with his system.  He was using a vertical on his
camper and was surprised I copied this signal so well.

PG&E crews updated estimate for power restoration for many north of
us to Friday VS January 18th.  These crews are basically rebuilding
an entire electrical grid from scratch after this storms & quakes!

In the “Sad But True” department, this ham has resorted to grid power
to put some juice into the big battery.  There will be very little
sun again for next 10 days.

I was absolutely delighted to pick up Steve in Mesa, AZ during my
Humboldt HF D.E.N. yesterday evening.  He switched to all caps
and send his call many times.  Good work Steve!

BTW, the Humboldt Winlink Wednesday Net is back on for a new year &
I hope many of our ops are able to use this testing day to keep up
their WL2K skills!  https://humboldtwinlinkwednesday.net/

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!
