A strange disruptive cosmic cloud settled over the ORCA net resulting in poor band conditions, off-frequency transmissions, no reply from ACTIVE stations, QRM, doubles, random transmissions from IN&OUT monitoring stations, transmission of TRAFFIC during FLAMP exercise, transmission of received file instead of RELAY, report of TRAFFIC file instead of FLAMP exercise, unreadable multi-lined VidID messages, and a relay of random transmission from IN&OUT monitoring stations. Other than that, the net went well.

We had an unusual amount of errors and mistakes. None of them a big deal, but they offer us an opportunity to learn and fine tune our digital radio skills. There is nothing to be done about poor band reception which was strong one minute, and gone the next. In a directed net, you only transmit when called by NCS. ORCA is fast paced with very little dead-air. If you transmit when NCS has not called you, you’re likely doubling someone. If NCS calls you and you type/edit your reply first, then transmit once your message is complete, it’s inefficient and creates opportunities for doubles and out of sequence transmissions. Active ORCA Ops need to type live into the TX buffer during the net. Typos and slow typing are acceptable; typing skills improve with practice. In a phone net, we don’t tape record our message first, then TX the recording… we PTT and begin talking. Digital is the same.

During check-in we had a couple stations checking in with VidID, which is normal. What was unusual was the added text (6 or 7 lines) and unreadable for NCS. What might look clear on your end isn’t necessarily clear at the other end. During check-in we only need your CALLSIGN if you plan to be ACTIVE. If you plan to MONITOR the net, check-in with your CALLSIGN IN&OUT. We do not need your QTH unless you are new to ORCA or QTH has changed.

Doug K7KY used modes PSK63RC5, PSK250R, and MFSK32 for the FLAMP exercise. After Gene W1EEP reported, the wheels came off the bus! Jaye KE6SLS was experimenting with a new SDR setup and was transmitting at 1536WF. I suspect that may have caused Joe W7LUX to get off frequency and mistakenly report that he was copying Doug at 1520. I always appreciate Doug’s focus and communication when he’s problem solving. He confirmed W1EEP and I were both copying him at 1504. Joe realized the error at his end. Usually an off-frequency transmission is no big deal. Tonight it turned out to be the 1st domino. This illustrates how one event creates a cascade of transmissions to sort out the situation… with random transmissions and random relay to boot!

The confusion during the net was actually good training for us all. Who knows what sort of band conditions we’ll see if we’ll continue experiencing Solar Minimum. EMCOMM situations would likely include confusion and stress. Pay attention to the flow of the net. During the FLAMP round, the prime task is completing the file.  NCS needs your REPORT to fill all stations efficiently. You need to CONFIRM the file before beginning the Optional Exercise. That exercise is secondary. How you participate is a model (good or bad) for newer Ops learning the protocols of a Directed digital net. Usually we run like clockwork! Poor reception, distraction, doubles, and operational errors do happen from time to time.

Another observation about relaying FLAMP fills: To relay fill blocks when there are multiple files in FLAMP’s RX window, you need remain on the FLAMP RX screen and pay close attention to the file checksum number in parentheses (B6E2).  This number must match the file checksum number in the REPORT you’re filling.  If you send the same file from the TX screen, FLAMP will assign a different checksum and the receiving station will not be able to use the fill blocks.

In all the excitement and confusion of the net, I totally forgot about our announcement regarding sending fills for missing FLAMP files following the net. Joe W7LUX in Flagstaff,AZ has excellent copy on most ORCA stations. Following the net, he worked with Doug KA7FOO in Las Vegas,NV to CONFIRM his traffic for the net. Doug and I received RELAY from Joe for KA7FOO and KB7VX’s traffic. Thank you Joe!

ANNOUNCEMENTS 10/Dec/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex149.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to
NCS in the Traffic round with FLAMP, tonight or any session.

Remember: When you see an asterisk after a CALLSIGN* on the Roster, that station
is Active, but not called for REPORTS during the FLAMP Exercise. They’re still
called for Traffic and Comments. We’re saving some time in the FLAMP Exercise.

Joe W7LUX brought up an important point last week. Occasionally, he wants to
complete a file sent to NCS in the Traffic round. All messages sent during the
Traffic round are directed to NCS and only NCS REPORTS and FILLS. This saves
a lot of time, but doesn’t enable anyone but NCS to FILL the message. Traffic
Round messages are mainly short replies to Optional FLAMP Exercise questions.
The replies are occasionally interesting to other Ops.

Stations often ask to have a Traffic Round message filled and we usually do this
after closing the net. We’ll make filling Traffic Round messages after net a
routine. If you want to fill a Traffic Round message sent to NCS, tell us during
Comments and we’ll fill the file for you directly after net.

Steve K6ETA also emailed a couple suggestions and observations. FLAMP is not
indicated for all digital traffic. Band condx and file length are important
considerations for processing digital traffic. Although we practice with FLAMP
every session, we don’t suggest using it for every message. We would select a
mode we think band condx will support and send the file in FLMSG. Failing in
FLMSG, we would use FLAMP.

Well, that was interesting… I think all our biorhythems have gone astray and the band isn’t helping We confirmed 5/of 10 stations and made a ton of mistakes… good to get them over in one net we usually do quite well Thanks to Gret for trying to help me (-: btn < K7KY

That was the most difficult FLAMP exercise we’ve ever had… btwn band condx, errors, off-freq signals, in&out stns reporting… Way to hang in there Doug… very stressful to have a round go astray like that. Hopefully all the gremlins are worked out and we can get back into our usual groove.

Mostly under clouds/rain last 5 days. Yesterday we got 3 hours of sun, so batteries are getting tired! :)

Sounds like I’m loosing much of the band at 7:48pm, but SDR still has good/fair copy. SDR has NCS centered at 1548 WF tonight. Oh, now have u at 1554 WF, but need to ADJUST my Xmt b4 I send! Fun stuff this SDR! Almost want to pull plug on experiment, but will see it through. Good learning experience. OH, I had LOCK on, no WONDER you had me all over the WF!

Dave k7dv added some fun confusion to the net, now I don’t feel so bad for being off frequency :) Would have lost the net for sure if not for the SDR, NVIS between Brookings and here is almost gone @ 8:09pm. I was on pins & needles tonight. White knuckles, the whole thing. But it was a fun test and I think a worthy test of using tools outside my radio shack. Thanks for putting up with me!

“That was the most difficult FLAMP exercise we’ve ever had” w7zap. Heeheee Thanks Mindy!

Thanks all, this was really fun tonight! 73 and have a GREAT WEEK!

not too well attended net as I had to go away and came in rite when you sent my call I thouhgt you were further along so srri I had to leave and come back It is what it is.. the band is not too bad just has Very slow deep qsb but copied most stations I wasnt able to get ur report on the file i sent till now… I can fill it at the last or just wait till next time.. ur doing great just most stations cant copy at times .. its just amatuer radio and not a business net so i would worry too much about us screwing up now and then. thats how we make better operators 73 to all and hope we have a merry christmas in the next few days thanks and gud net de K7dv

No worries Dave… just a difficult net tonight. Thanks for working w/us

Happy to see NCS signal was strong tonght at the start, dropped to about S8 after 30 minutes. Then back up later. Why is the fequency shifting tonight, is it ionospheric? First copied Doug at 1504 wf, then went to 1510 wf. Jaye’s signal also shifted to 1533wf. I don’t get it. Mindy’s signal never shifted off of 1504 wf.

W1EEP’s signal always superb. Got full FLAMP from him See he has a delta loop. WOOO! Got KE6sls FLAMP too. There is a Full moon tonight.

Nice report Bruce. Will go look at NOAA dashboard and see if I can tell anything about the band
